“Boars Head has a great concierge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2008

I had stayed at the Boars Head 6 years previously and it was dirty and shabby. This time there have been serious improvements made. The rooms are better appointed, and it is much more of a destination resort, although our short stay did not allow us to eat here or use any of the facilities. I will say that the concierge both at night and in the morning were very much on top of their games. We had requested tickets late in the evening to Monticello (the next day), and when we stopped by early the next morning, the concierge provided reservations and directions. He could not have been more helpful. The one negative is that the bathrooms are very small and old.

Had a fantastic weekend at the Boar's Head. Stayed in the Main Inn. The room was quaint and super quiet. The bed was very comfortable. The bathrobes were soft and plush.

The front desk was very helpful and nice providing local maps. Concierge has lots of restaurant recommendations. Highly recommend the Old Mill room for Sunday brunch. The omelettes and belgian waffles were delicious. Don't forget to save room for the decadent chocolate bread pudding.

The spa was also outstanding. Got massages, manicures and pedicures. All services were great. And the Sports Club offers a good workout facility and outdoor heated pool. The tennis there is top-notch with indoor and outdoor courts.

My three boys and I went up to Charlottesville to see the Smashing Pumpkins at the Charlottesville Pavillion and stayed at the Boars Head Inn. What an amazing place! We got in late on Friday and the staff was very friendly and efficient in getting us checked in. Our room was beautiful overlooking the lake with a balcony. On Saturday we went to the restaurant for breakfast. Great buffet and service. Then we went over to the sports club and did the rock climbing wall. Caroline worked there and was so friendly. We had a blast. Then onto the pool at the sports club and after that the pool by our room. On Sunday we had the wonderful brunch and more rock climbing!!! The room was so nice and beds very comfortable. Susan Carver made our reservation and is awesome!

I had higher hopes for this hotel. We (my boyfriend and I) have stayed at this hotel a few times. The negatives: The first time I went to have breakfast by myself at the restaurant and I ended up leaving. I asked the hostess if she had a brunch table for 1 available and she said brunch is more expensive than breakfast - huh? I just asked for a table. Then another couple walked up and she proceeded to help them. I ended up leaving and having tea. Another time we stayed there the concierge was supposed to make a dinner reservation for us. They said that they couldn't get through to the restaurant when in fact, they were closed. The worst part is that they never told us. Positives: The grounds are beautiful. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. I got a facial at the spa and it was okay (not bad, but I've had better). All in all, I'd probably stay somewhere else next time.

  • Disliked — I forgot to say in my review that the toilet in the bathroom was very dirty!! yuck.

We live outside DC and wanted a getaway within three hours without having to get on a plane since we'd only be gone for a weekend. Friends suggested the Boar's Head Inn and we've always liked the Charlottesville area. We had a King room in the Main Inn and were very pleased. This isn't a Ritz or Four Seasons, but more like a quaint country inn, although much larger. It reminded me of the Sonoma Mission Inn in CA (the original Inn) and the Bar Harbor Inn in Maine. Compared to Keswick Hall, Greenbrier, Homestead, Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Kingsmill or a top DC property their rates were between $100-$250 less per night for the same type of room. The staff seems to be a mix of older college students and early UVA retirees, but we didn't sense any snootiness at all.

Upsides - It is no more than 5 minutes from UVA, 10 minutes from the Downtown Mall and there are probably 15 wineries within a 1/2 hour drive. The staff (front desk, housekeeping, restaurant, gift shop and room service) were all very nice, the property has a lot of personality and the grounds were gorgeous and well kept. The food was very good, albeit a bit expensive (we did room service breakfasts and Saturday dinner at the Old Mill Room)

Downsides - The room amenities can use an upgrade (coffee makers are older, they still have tube TVs with no sleep timers). Parking can be tight when they have functions going on. The wine list at the Old Mill Room was somewhat overpriced, especially for the regional wines they offer, although the selection is pretty extensive. The newer part of the Old Mill Room has better window lines but is much louder if you're trying to have a quiet, romantic dinner.

Overall I'd say they deserve the four diamond rating they have, and its apparent that they have made some improvements to the property given some of the older reviews listed here. We're looking forward to a return trip, although I'd be hesitant to stay in the Ednam Hall wing without checking out the room first.

We shopped for a 4 star hotel at a reasonable rate and went to the Boars Head Inn in Charlottesville VA. Got the B&B package which includes accomodations, taxes, tips, resort fees and an unbelievable breakfast buffet. We could not each lunch! Staff was 5 star, extremely friendly and accomodating. Large nicely furnished room with very comfortable bed & pillows, balcony, large, fully appointed bathroom, mini-fridge and safe. Turndown service with chocolates, ice and bathrobe. Lots of regional magazines in room and daily newspaper delivery as well as a number of (NY Times, Wall St. Journal, etc.) other papers available. Great spa and athletic facilities. Went to the pool one day. 2 large pools plus kiddie pool. Great poolside menu with reasonable prices. Quiet and serene. Very convenient to downtown mall, great shopping, vineyards and Monticello. Took a hot air balloon ride on Bonaire Charters(434.981.5260) which was fantastic. Not a problem if afraid of heights; very gentle, peaceful and takes off and lands like a feather. A must do! Highly recommend this for a place to relax and be pampered.

This was my second stay at the Boar's Head Inn in the last year and found it much better than my first. What became immediately clear to me on this visit is there is a drastic difference in quality in rooms in the main building versus those in Ednan Hall (where I stayed last time- a separate wing and building of rooms on the hotel property).

I was assigned a corner room in the main building (same building where you check in) and was pleasantly surprised. The room was enormous, the room plush, the bed comfortable, some nice hotel views, a huge bathroom. It had all the amenities of a legit four star property. My prior stay in Ednan was definately a step down albeit it appears some renovations are now occurring on that side of the property.

Overall, I would not hesitate staying at the Boar's Head again. The staff are super helpful, the atmostsphere is charming, and make sure you get a room in the main inn and you'll have a great stay.
