“Another lovely stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Just back from a quick one-night visit to our favorite splurge getaway. Despite the gray and gloomy weather, L'Auberge was a great pick-me-up. We always stay at the Villa - quiet and peaceful - just a short drive from the main house. Lovely dinner, always just enough food, not too much or too little. Thoughtful service. And a WONDERFUL breakfast - French toast BLT with lemon aoli - tomatoes fresh from the garden. We'll be back soon - and you should visit too.

My wife and I just spent five nights at this most gracious and beautiful Inn while we attended a theater festival at nearby Shepherd University. In all respects, L'Auberge Provençale exceeded our expectations. An early riser, I was met on the patio each morning well before breakfast by one of the hosts with a steaming cup of coffee that was refilled regularly. This level of service was replicated throughout our stay by every staff person we encountered. The breakfasts were the finest I have had since my last visit to Paris. The accommodations, sitting rooms and spacious grounds were flawless in design and comfort. We are looking forward to a return visit.

We are delighted you and your friends enjoyed your stay here at L'Auberge Provencale while you were attending the film festival in Shepherdstown this year. So nice to see people relaxing on the grounds and enjoying the food here at the inn. We try to create a little respite from the otherwise hectic world and both couples sure knew how to take advantage of that.
In this word today, everyone is a critic, but it seems the season travelers have the appreciation for what goes into creating a unique atmosphere. Thanks you so much for noticing.
Hopefully, we will see you return again next year! It would be our pleasure to host you again.

My husband and I spent two nights here in June to celebrate his birthday, and came away with mixed feelings about our experience. We love French country decorating style and the owners have created beautiful spaces that imagine the Provence region of France. We found the staff and owners friendly and easy to talk with. Our favorite part of the stay was using the steam bath feature of the shower (we stayed upstairs in the main building) and having access to an outside balcony nicely furnished with a table chairs, and a chaise. We also liked the close proximity of the B&B to Harper's Ferry, where we spent the good part of one of our days there. The afternoon fresh lemonade and homemade cookies and other treats were absolutely delightful. On the downside, as others have mentioned, the main building sits next to a noisy road where trucks and cars pass night and day. The property is also near a railroad and we were awakened both nights by train whistles and train noise. Since our main goal was to get away from city noise and enjoy the peacefulness of being in a pastoral setting, the cacophony of city-like noises took away from the experience we had sought out.
We looked forward to the two dinner reservations we made but came away a bit disappointed each night. We found that beef and pork dishes were the best bets as the chicken rolade I chose the first night was dry as toast and the fish entree we chose the second night was also dry because it was overcooked. My husband's first night steak was tender and juicy as was his intermediate pork course the second night. First courses were fine but nothing I couldn't and haven't prepared at home. The desserts were the highlight of each meal. We enjoyed a bottle of wine each night and loved each selection; however, we were disappointed that - with a rare exception - most bottles started at $90 and went way up from that price point. The inn does hold a Wine Spectator best of Award of excellence award for its wine offerings. For us, spending $180 on good wine was over the top when taking into account the average quality of the rest of the meal.
In the end, our experience was okay but not worth a trip back. The high bill at the end of our visit didn't match the quality of the experience (overcooked food/ noise issues). In planning future Virginia countryside retreats, we'll head back to the Ashby Inn, the Inn at little Washington, or try something new.

Thank you for writing a review about your experience here at the inn. We work very hard to ensure our guests enjoy the ultimate in a French country experience.
Although we do have some traffic in front of the inn...it does dissipate at night. We have installed triple pane insulated windows and insulation so one is not disturbed while sleeping. The train does pass by at about 5:30 in the morning-one mile from the inn and if your windows are open you may here the lonely whistle as it travels through the valley. Some find that romantic, some are sensitive to the sound. We are sorry you were disturbed by the noise.
Our wine menu is extensive..we have over 1100 selections. The prices range from $36-on up. We have 135 selections under 100.00, that are all terrific. There are some categories where it is almost impossible to offer quality for under 85.00. But our sommelier or any wait staff would have been happy to help with less expensive selections.
You might want to try our Villa La Campagnette for a quieter stay, which is our sister inn, just three miles from L'Auberge Provencale. We offer luxury suites and rooms there in a quiet, intimate setting.
Chef Scott and Chef Garrett are both talented, dedicated chefs. They are sorry you had less than a stellar experience, but are a little puzzled about the fact you could cook the appetizers at home. With our farm to table menu, and our dedication to quality ingredients, it must indeed have been an off night for them. We would love for you to return, perhaps stay at our Villa, and try our cuisine again. Our customer base has just been raving!

What an experience! My husband and I spent last Friday night here. We stayed in the Villa, the part of the inn that is separate from the main house...Villa la campagnette. We loved being a little bit removed from the main guest rooms but then also loved spending the evening at the main house for our Chef's tasting and 5-course dinner at the restaurant. This was a trip to remember....a very special unique time, when you wanted to just stop time and remember every detail forever. You really feel as though you are in Europe. Every nuance, from your welcoming treats (dried fruits and nuts, baked delectable goodies, fresh lemonade) to your full gourmet breakfast the next morning (fresh croissants, other baked breads, homemade granola, freshly squeezed mango juice, local ingredients from surrounding farmers), you are made to feel special. Like your stay really matters to Celeste and Alain. My husband and I never met Alain but had some special time to speak to Celeste and hear of her stories and travels. A must for anyone in need of a very special getaway. I must say though, be prepared to spend quite a few dollars, unless you happen to come across a last minute special of Facebook promotion.

Room Tip: There is a difference in price with all rooms, I guess primarily due to size. We stayed in Villa Sui...

Thank you for your lovely comments. Alain and I have striven for 33 years to provide a small respite, a "touch of Provence" in the Virginia countryside. Our chefs are involved with our farm to table concept, much like in Europe and our three menus allow our customers to have their choice between a 3 course, 5 course and chef's tasting menu. All showcase what is best and freshest of the season.
Yes, some might view this as a splurge, but you deserve it! A gentile respite from an otherwise hectic world.
It is always a pleasure when I do get a few minutes to have a lively discussion with my guests.
We look forward to your return to L'Auberge Provencale.

L'Auberge Provençale is a lovely Bed and Breakfast in Boyce, Va. The owner, Alain, is also an amazing chef and we enjoyed the most wonderful dinner and breakfast. They grow everything on the property!

This is our second stay at this beautiful B&B, so we knew what to expect...and our expectations were high for everything from the room to the food and service. We were checked in by a charming and helpful man, who informed us that he would be our waiter that evening. He also helped with our luggage, which was good as my husband has some mobility challenges and the room (which is outside of the main building) is 150 or so feet from the parking area and has several steps to navigate. The room was lovely and the steam shower is heavenly! We chose the 5 course meal and asked our waiter to recommend wines for each course. He recommended half glasses as we were eating different things and his choices were superb (though we didn't check the prices before ordering). The food and wine were top notch -- definitely a splurge for us. Overall, it's been a lovely experience. We'll definitely be back!

My girlfriend has treated me, for my birthday, to dinner, overnight stay and breakfast for the last 8 or 9 years at L'Auberge. Obviously we LOVE the place. We have found our favorite room ( sorry it's a secret ) and have managed to reserve it most of the time. L'Auberge has both rooms and suites and some villas a few miles from the main house. The suites, I believe, are the separate accommodations and a short walk (100 feet) from the main house. We have stayed in them and they are great but now we prefer staying in the main house. The suites are great if you want a little more privacy but the rooms in the main house are also very quiet and private. The dinners and breakfasts have been exceptional and seem to get better every year. And the staff is very friendly and helpful. Two of the pictures attached are from our 2012 visit since I didn't take any inside room pictures on our 2013 visit. The 3rd one is of the new kitty, Noelle. L'Auberge is about 60 or 65 miles from D.C..Getting there is pretty easy once you get on Virginia roads. It is basically a straight shot on Route 50 until you make a left onto 340 with L'Auberge on the right about 3/4 mile down the road. And if you like cats, go visit Noelle in the office.
