“Recently Renovated - Well Done!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012

My wife and I stayed at this all-suite hotel which is just minutes from Virginia Tech. It is our favorite place to stay when we visit our son at college. They recently revovated the rooms and lobby and did an excellent job. Hawthorne offers a very reasonable rate that include all of the extras; internet access, pool, hot breakfast, fitness center, etc. In fact the fitness center would be my only complaint. They have outdated equipment and there are not any free weights.
The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is always upbeat.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 321 - A beautiful view of the rolling hills, not too close to the elevator noise w...

Thank you for the review. In fact, our fitness center will soon have new equipment as we wrap up our renovations. We really appreciate the positive feedback on the major changes we've made so far and look forward to welcoming you back to the finished product.

This is a nice hotel, albeit not architecturally distinguished; but it's quiet and well-maintained and the service is great. The only disappointment was that it wasn't as close to the Virginia Tech campus as I'd thought; but it is within walking distance, albeit a long walk, so if you don't have a car, you can either walk or have the hotel call you a taxicab; it's a very short ride. I can't think of any reason to stay here other than because of its proximity to VT, but the hotel is adjacent to a very bucolic farm with cows and hay, so if you like picturesque countryside, that's right outside your door. The rooms have a rather odd layout, but my room on the 5th floor was quite large & very commodious, with a small refrigerator & a kitchen sink as well as a coffee maker. The breakfast was ordinary but ample, and the cook was very helpful. I enjoyed staying here, but I'd probably stay at the hotel on campus if I went to Blacksburg again, since I don't have a car. But for anyone with a car, this would be a perfectly acceptable hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. Your feedback is helpful to us and our potential guests. For the record, our hotel is exactly one mile from the entrance to Virginia Tech at West Campus Drive and a mile-and-a-half from Burruss Hall at the heart of campus. We believe this location offers the best combination of setting and convenience in the area.

While it is true that our rates increase for special University events, the very highest rate that we have ever charged or quoted was $289. This year our max rate for football games was $209, and for graduation our highest rate was $259 for a double suite. We realize that these rates are still high for a business traveler, but many of our competitors have rates in the $300 to $400 range and require a three night stay -- not us. We do appreciate your feedback and hope you'll continue to choose us on your business travels.

I'll start out by saying the front desk staff was great. Good attitudes, helpful, friendly, etc. Also has good proximity to VT. Everything else, however? Not so great. I do quite a bit of business travel and see my fare share of hotels rooms - I'd rate this hotel at the lower end. When I first drove up, I wasn't sure if the hotel was open or closed, as when I looked up at the building, I saw mattresses leaned up against the windows on the top two stories. (I learned they are renovating, but it did not appear this way at first). The room seemed pretty outdated and in need of repair. The TV remote did not work, there were holes in the carpet, the ice machine on my floor did not work. I left for dinner and came back to find the automatic front doors would not open. Another guest and I walked back and forth in front of the doors for about 30 seconds until they finally opened. I asked the woman at the front desk about it and she said they just installed a new door and it'd take a few days to kick into gear. (?) The staff was great, everything else about the hotel was sub-par...with the other options around, I wouldn't come back again.

Our hotel is currently undergoing a major renovation, scheduled to be completed this April. We are very excited about the new look and the amenities that this renovation will bring. We truly regret any inconsistencies in our product that you may have experienced during this process -- I can assure you that they will all be addressed and corrected. It can be a challenge to meet construction schedules and still maintain the high standard of accommodation our guests expect and deserve, but we are confident that our fully renovated hotel will offer the finest lodging in the area. We hope you will reconsider and give us a second chance -- our wonderful staff would love to welcome you back!

We stay at the Hawthorn for all of the VT Home Football games. It is so convenient to the University and the suite makes it nice if you have a student you want to bring back and visit with. The breakfast (included) is good. We find it comfortable, clean and nice. We have probably stayed there at least 20-25 times now.

We had a smooth and easy late check in on Christmas Day to a wonderful suite for 5 of us who spent 10 hours in the car, for a reasonable AAA rate of $98. The young adults were motivated enough to use the exercise facility, and the full breakfast with 'make your own waffles' was the best we encountered on our vacation. The mattresses were very comfortable, and the whole Inn was kept very clean, and in the Holiday spirit. The only minus is very common in the industry: supplying 4 small bath towels for 5 adults. A beautiful area, away from the highway noise that plagues many franchises.
