“Nice rooms, some problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2012

Just stayed here for our son's graduation from Virginia Tech. I'm going to discount the fact that it's graduation weekend and the prices are jacked up with a three night minimum (up from two last year I'm told). They probably do that for football weekends as well - and not just at this hotel or in this university town.

The rooms were very nice. Large bathroom, very comfortable bed, large screen, flat-panel TV with a wide channel selection. Microwave and refrigerator in the room were a nice touch not found other places. Free Wi-Fi was relatively speedy and worked easily.

Staff were very friendly throughout and they had complimentary coffee, lemonade and chocolate-dipped strawberries at the front desk. Shuttle to the campus is nice, but this hotel is the closest to campus anyway, so it wouldn't be an essential if you could walk without difficulty.

The reason to give a relatively low rating is that my wife likes to use the treadmill in hotels in the a.m. They had one - but only one - in a small exercise room. She got to use it each morning but noted to the front desk folks after the first morning that the dispenser of hand sanitizer was empty. She also noted that the TV remote didn't work. The next day it was the same thing, and the young man at the desk helpfully pointed out that the TV could be manually changed without a remote. I guess he wasn't familiar with a treadmill.

Anyway, if you don't mind paying the higher prices this is a nice place to stay. Just bring your own hand sanitizer and maybe a set of double-A batteries.

Room Tip: Ground floor ones are right next to the parking lot - convenient if you have lots of luggage, but se...

This Holiday Inn is located literally across the street from the VA Tech campus. Now that you know the reason for its continued existence, let's talk about "the rest of the story."

This is branded as a "Holiday Inn," rather than an "Express," "Select" or any of the other brands within the family. At one time it was probably the premier property in Blacksburg. It has both an inside (small) pool and an outside pool. There is also courtyard space that can be accessed directly from many rooms. Both a bar and a restaurant are part of the facility, along with banquet and meeting rooms.

The overall look and feel of the hotel is just a little off. It seems darker than it probably really is. It seems a bit dirtier and defintiely more dated than HI Express properties. The ceilings seem low throughout. The breakfast buffet offers considerably more than HIE, but it costs @ $12/pp.

Several resaurants, i.e., Panera, a sub place, a B-B-Q place, and others, are within walking distance. A nearby shopping center also contains a drug store and a branch of the VA Tech bookstore---complete with a full array of Hokie gear.

The rooms are strange. Furntiure is too big for the small guest rooms. The bathroom was so small that I could literally reach out and touch the walls on each side. Despite the small size, the bathrooms were surprisingly efficient, due to the arrangement of the built-in vanity. A Flat screen TV is provided, but the furniture on which it is placed overwhelms the room.

This property has a very, very strange combination of "normal" hotel guest accommodations and rooms that are sold as condo or timeshares. Maybe it's the bad economy or maybe the business model is flawed, but the condo aspect of this property doesn't seem to have been a big success. Moreover, it seems to detract from the overall operation.

This is not a bad place to stay. In fact, we have stayed here several times. It's just that it is certainly not a premier place, either. Apples to apples, I would choose a standard HIE over this place. The nearest HIE is in Christiansburg, which is @10-15 min away (immediately off I-81). If proximity to campus is critical, choose the Holiday Inn University--Blacksburg. If not, you can do just as well at any number of properties on outskirts of town.

The hotel had been totally spruced up and the rooms are very attractive. The location--for a Hokie fan--is great, as it is very close to campus. It is also within walking distance to shops and various eateries... another plus. (Any knitters around? Mosaic, a wonderful yarn place, is only a few minutes walk from the hotel!) But, back to the hotel... the staff is friendly and eager to please. The only possible caveat might be the food in the restaurant which is somewhat non-descript--although the wraps are good. But the service is attentive and you will definitely not go hungry!

This hotel is very nice! Friendly staff, great shuttle service and so close to the VT Campus you can walk to any of the sports events or check out the beautiful campus. The value and location are tops for the area, you will not be disappointed. It is especially fun during football games and there are often tailgate parties and special appearances by VT Football coaches and players.

Having been to Blacksburg many many times, I can tell you this is the best option of both business and pleasure. They also recently renovated the rooms to a level ahead of its competition in town.

Excellent stay in a very clean hotel with extremely nice staff. Love the location so close to the campus. Quiet room with a huge television made it very easy to relax. Plan on being a frequent guest in the future.

We usually travel south on Interstate 81 in the Spring because it is a beautiful drive. We stayed at the Holiday Inn University in blacksburg which is on the edge of the Va Tech campus and had a great time. Our room had been recently updated and the maintenanace of the hotel overall is first rate. The staff is very friendly nd helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the courtyard
