My only regret when we stayed at Smithfield was that we didn't stay for more than one night. The B&B was absolutely gorgeous! We stayed in the Jacqueline room. It was beautifully appointed and clean. It didn't have an ensuite bathroom, but it was just across the hall and anytime we had to use it, we didn't run into any of the other guests.

When we arrived, there was a substitute innkeeper there who was warm and welcoming. She told us everything we needed to know about the house and then showed us to our room. Shortly thereafter, Betsy arrived and welcomed us too. Off the kitchen was a table set up with coffee all day long (with all sorts of options, as well as sweeteners and creamers) and there were also plenty of snacks available. In addition, there was a small fridge stocked with a variety of drinks, available at any time to guests.

We walked the propery, which was very interesting and relaxing. We also just sat next to the little stream and checked out the farm store.

For received an excellent recommendation for dinner and returned to the B&B for a peaceful refreshing night's sleep.

Breakfast was incredible. Everything that was served was delicious and although I was a bit skeptical about the family style dining setup, it was a pleasant experience getting to know some of the guests. Also, after the last of breakfast was served, Ruth sat down and talked as well.

The entire house was immactulately kept and furnished with tasteful furniture!

I can't wait to return!

We wanted to get out of DC for the weekend -- and Berryville was just far enough into the mountains to be both cooler and a gateway to interesting places in the Virginia and West Virginia countryside. Our hosts, Betsy and Ruth (daughter and mother), at Smithfield Farm B&B could not have been more gracious. We had questions about the history and furnishings of the house. They enjoyed sharing the story of how this family homeplace had been saved and kept in the family.

The grand family home is beautifully restored and arranged for guests. We stayed in the (very cool) below-ground rooms. If we had been with another couple or friends who had children -- that space would accommodate up to 6 and also had a full kitchen!

While the 400+ acres of the working farm are about 3 miles off the highway -- it was really only about a 10 minute drive into Berryville, where there were both food and entertainment options. Saturday night we drove about 20 minutes further up to Winchester where the historic downtown is now a pedestrian mall with 8+ various dining options (Thai, Italian, Brit-Pub, American, Tex-Mex, etc) or if you are a bit more funky-adverturesome around the corner is a Jamacian Jerk-Chicken place. How it ended up in the mountains of Virginia is a question we didn't get answered -- but they had this smooth Jamacian styled ice cream (to go) in tropical flavors.

Sunday morning at the B&B. Great coffee was available at 7:30am. Breakfast in the big sunny dining room at Smithfield was a treat. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary and the congratulations were a nice way to begin the morning. Wonderful breakfast -- including seasonal items. Both eggs and ham were from Smithfield farm.

We are going to point friends in the direction of Smithfield Farm B&B and look for their products being sold at the Farmers' Markets in No Virginia. -- Chip & Wayne

Room Tip: There is an option on a seperate little free-standing cottage. You need to be OK with steep stairs.

Just had a great Girl's Weekend at Smithfield Farm. Ruth and Betsy are very easy-going and lovely to talk to. The Inn is beautiful; it's a Civil War era home that retains it's charm but has been thoroughly modernized for comfort. Spring is a great time to visit the farm to see the animals, go on hikes, and enjoy the beautiful views. I look forward to returning soon!

Room Tip: We stayed in the lower level "suite". It has plenty of room for a larger group

Just returned from a long girls' weekend at Smithfield, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the place. This was my third visit, and once again, Ruth and Betsy went above and beyond in terms of making us feel welcome. The farm itself is wonderful for long hikes and animal-watching, the inn is spotless and charming and the food (all from farm products) was amazing. This is a very special place, and you will not be disappointed if you're looking for a getaway.

My husband and I just came back from a one night stay at Smithfield. We were immediately greeted by Betsy and Ruth who were both extremely friendly and welcoming. They were always available if we needed anything, yet allowed us, more so, encouraged us to walk around and make ourselves at home giving us the freedom to roam without being in our space. We are used to more around us and I was a bit nervous about being off the beaten path but it is absolutely a perfect getaway! The grounds are just beautiful and the food was yummy. I wish we could have stayed a week. I had envisioned hiking all around the grounds (400 acres) to go find the farm animals and various gems like the creek and barn had we stayed longer. Maybe next time!

Room Tip: The rooms are very large and private but we stayed in the cute summer cottage for more privacy.

From the moment we arrived to celebrate a milestone birthday, we felt right at home. Betsy and Ruth are the perfect hosts at this beautiful B&B on a working farm. We were taken on a tour of the home and shown where everything we could possibly need during our stay could be found (unexpected extras included coffee, fruit, water and other snacks that you could help yourself to at any hour) and then left to be on our own -- just the right balance of hospitality and privacy. We were then free to walk the beautiful grounds, stop at the farm store and enjoy the spaciousness of our room and bath before heading out for dinner (if you don't already have dinner plans, they've provided a ton of suggestions of nearby restaurants).

After dinner we returned to a farily quiet homestead (we were only sharing with one other couple, but the home at only 5 rooms could never be TOO noisy or busy for one's taste). We took advantage of a luxurious soak in the claw foot tub in our room (bath salts provided, again another unexpected extra) before retiring to an amazingly comfortable four poster bed. (It should be noted that the bathroom also contains a stand up shower for more practical purposes!)

We had been asked upon arrival if a 9am breakfast would be alright with us and we agreed it would be, looking forward to sleeping in and enjoying a leisurely morning. Just before 9, we headed downstairs and met up with the other couple spending the weekend. We all got coffee, chatted a bit and were told that breakfast was ready if we were. BREAKFAST WAS AMAZING! We started with a plate of fresh fruit served in the hollowed out core of a half a pineapple. As I mentioned, this is a working farm, so much of what we ate was a product of the farm itself, including the next course of eggs, sausage and hash browns. Muffins were also on the table. Finally we had apple crisp for dessert that came complete with a candle in it for my boyfriend's birthday (the other couple was celebrating a fith anniversary). The food, conversation with Betsy & Ruth, as well as that of the other couple made the whole experience more than we ever imagined. We didn't want to leave, but when we did, we were sent off with a little something to remember our time by (I don't want to give it away, so you'll have to go and experience it for yourself).

I can't speak highly enough of Smithfield Farm Bed & Breakfast, have told many friends and family about it and can't wait to go back.

Just came back from a weekend stay at Smithfield and couldn't be happier! It's a lovely farm with a beautiful B&B property and a scenic drive. Ruth is so warm and welcoming, it really felt like staying at home. The house is full of history and heritage and Ruth does an amazing job of preserving it just that way. The breakfast was a lavish multi course meal with delicious eggs & sausage from their farm. From small things to big, Ruth and her family ensured we had a terrific experience and I'm very glad we chose this place. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a delightful country getaway.
