“Step back in time...but with all the luxury and all the price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

We spent our 7th anniversary Nov. 24th in the Phileo Suite of the 1804 Inn. It only has three rooms and the other two are upstairs so if stairs are a problem (for me) we needed to be on ground floor.
This is a suite with a separate sitting room, separate bath and an enormous bedroom. Each room has been carefully filled with antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries of England and France. Luxurious window coverings, bed linens that feel like butter and complete with a three-step stool to get into bed! Since it's so old, I was concerned about the heat (the night was 28) but it was so warm and toasty. I was disappointed in our breakfast. I thought it was cooked to order..but was told by the waitress "this is what we have today...." I really wanted pancakes and oatmeal...not just eggs I can get at any diner! It is a very romantic place and you expect a servant to announce that Mr. Jefferson or Mr. Madison would be arriving for tea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Phileo is downstairs if you have a problem with stairs...remember no elevators in 1804!

One of the things I love about b&bs are the gourmet breakfasts. I was shocked after check-in. When being shown my room, I asked what time breakfast is. The grundgy attendant showed me the minifridge and said this cold food prepared the day before is what I'm getting for my $300 a night stay. It was stocked with all store bought items. My breakfast options were boxed cereal, fruit, miniature muffins and quiche slivers less than one inch wide. Nothing was homemade. You'd get better at a continental breakfast at a Holiday Inn.

We stayed in the Vermentino Suite of Blue Run Cottage, a refurbished farmhouse (opened around June 2012) with 3 suites. It is a quick drive (or walk) along a dirt farm road past the 1804 Inn. The kitchen is replete! Breakfast plates, crackers, cheese, fruit, sweets, water, juice, milk, wine -- you name it, the hosts provide it. There is a small sitting area just off the deck, the eat-in kitchen, small living room, b-i-g bedroom with wonderful, comfy king-sized bed, and bathroom w/separate sink/dressing area. Also a lovely deck outside in a pastoral setting under mature trees and close to the vines. We traipsed around the fields and vineyard, explored the ruined mansion and racecourse, and enjoyed complimentary wine tasting included at the winery. This is a great place for a quiet get-away.

After ordering a bottle of Barboursville Vineyard's premiere "Octagon" red wine at the Regency Dining Room at Colonial Williamsbug a few years ago and enjoying it, the sommelier suggested that we visit the Barboursville Winery to further investigate their offerings. We toured the ruins of the actual Octagon house that Thos. Jefferson designed for Governor Barbour and noticed that there was a small bed & breakfast that adjoined the ruins. We vowed to return and recently had the opportunity due to Parents Weekend at the University of Virginia (about twenty minutes away).

We stayed in one of garden cottages and really enjoyed ourselves. Despite the fact that the building is well over 100 years old, the room had been tastefully updated with modern touches. The fact that there was neither TV nor a Wi-Fi connection didn't phase us at the least. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the ambience was quiet & restful.

Parking was nearby and a delightful breakfast was waiting for us to warm up at our leisure every morning.

We plan to return!

Room Tip: the garden cottages offer excellent value

This is an absolutely beautiful setting. The suites in the Inn are all wonderful. You can wonder the grounds, visit the winery and the restaurant on site is delicious. The Inn keeper is great and left me a cheese and cracker plate to enjoy as a light dinner with a lovely bottle of wine. Breakfast is also very good, I enjoyed home made granola and yogurt, it was perfect. This is a great romantic getaway and there is plenty to do in the area if you decide to go exploring. Plan to sleep in and enjoy the king size bed and if it is cold, the fire place is the perfect touch.

We stayed in the Phileo Suite of the inn. It was a good bit more expensive than places we usually stay, but once we arrived I understood why. The suite was very spacious (much larger than you would guess by viewing the pictures online), with a generous-sized sitting room, bedroom, and full bath with separate additional pedastal sink. The rooms were beautifully furnished and well lit with numerous windows and several doors to the outside. We arrived to be greeted by a friendly staff and a bottle of wine, a beautiful cheese platter, and a small birthday cake. The grounds are beautiful, with acres of vineyards, mountain views, historic ruins, and a fantastic winery (with complimentary tasting of about 20 wines). The full breakfast the next morning was fabulous, and I can't emphasize enough how friendly all of the staff members were. This was a perfect weekend getaway, and I hope to visit again someday!
