“A memorable romantic stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

This was the second time that we have stayed at the Barberra cottage at the 1804 Inn. Just as charming and romantic as the last time. The bed was comfortable, the small dining area and kitchen were fine and the bottle of wine, crackers and cheese with grapes that were left for us were very thoughtful. We took the wine and snacks out into the garden and sat at the wrought iron table to appreciate the sunset and the view.

When we got back from dinner at the Palladio (disappointment--food excellent, service mediocre), we had a fire in the fireplace, as the evening was chilly. How romantic!

After a restful night's sleep, we breakfasted in the garden. The breakfast food wasn't that great. Honestly, I would prefer some whole grain bread that could be toasted in the toaster in the cottage to the soggy pastries that were left in the refrigerator, and some plain yogurt and unsweetend meusli would be more appreciated than the quiche that had to be reheated in the microwave. and yet was still soggy. Breakfast at the 1804 could definitely be improved. But the room was clean and well-prepared and the innkeeper was very accomodating (we arrived after check-in time). I can't wait to go back for another romantic interlude with mon cher!

Room Tip: We love the cottages (versus the rooms in the main house)

We recently booked a night at the Inn and were mildlly disappointed. For $250 a night, our breakfast portion of the stay was day old breakfast that is left in your refrigerator before check-in. You then get to reheat a quiche that was pretty boring in flavor and scoop out the fresh fruit. The pastrys might have been decent if they had not been left in the refrigerator. They were just a soggy mess, as the only method of reheating them was the microwave. The cottage itself was adequate, but the bed was less than adequate. It was a mattress, no box springs, sitting on a wooden box. Every time I got out of bed, I hit the back of my legs on that wooden box. The restaurant, The Palladio, was an outstanding event. I can'[t say I would recommend this place.

For Thanksgiving, we decided to spend the night near Charlottesville, VA - and found 1804 Inn of Barboursville Vineyards through a guidebook. As you can guess, the inn was located on a vineyard and the setting was spectacularly beautiful. Lots of green rolling hills - hidden away from the main road. The site was located near the ruins of Governor Barbour's home designed by Jefferson of course. Instead of staying at the inn, we rented one of three cottages. We drove down a single country lane to the cottage - a little white house divided into two rentals. Our rental was basically one room (more like a studio) with a working fireplace and a small kitchen that was stocked with food for the next morning breakfast. Upon arriving we also received a bottle of red wine from the vineyard and local cheeses. It was very quaint and very quiet. We never saw any other guests (not that we spent the day much there) and we knew that other guests were there due to the two other cars parked near us. We sincerely felt like the place was just for us ........... We did walk around the property on trails through the vineyard for a bit. All very beautiful. Our stay there was a nice reprieve from our crazy busy lives. I would absolutely recommend staying there if you need a get away.
