Snow and more snow!---Isn't that what you go to Vermont for in winter? We were not disappointed. It snowed for three days and sprinkled a hefty eighteen inches of powdered sugar perfection over the village of Wilmington and nearby Mt. Snow. We had picture postcard memories to take home with us (along with our maple syrup and cheese from the Hogback Mountain Country Store nearby). Eat the cheese and keep the memories! On a scale of one-to-ten, our trip was an eleven. A couple of empty-nesters, we've spent romantic get-aways with the Goodmans before, and enjoy the country charm of The Nutmeg Country Inn during ski season. My husband and I go during the week when things aren't as hectic, and we relish the quiet and relaxing beauty of this southern Vermont village. We like having a wood fireplace in our room and always look forward to waking up to Susan's sunny breakfast (served up with a hearty dash of hospitality by her husband Gerry). We no longer ski, but don't count us out just yet when it comes to winter fun. We love the tube park inside the Mt. Snow Resort (10 minutes away) and there's snow-shoeing and hiking on trails right behind the inn. On the downside, some of the rooms are a bit small, but photos are provided on the inn's web-site, so check them out before you book. There is a nice variety of rooms to satisfy just about anyone's needs. Maid service can be spotty, but who cares when you're snowed in with nothing to do but snuggle with that special snow bunny of yours! Another downer is that the restaurant is only open on the weekends. Fortunately, there are great little spots in the neighboring area, some of them a short hike (wear your boots) from the inn. I brought my guitar along and spent some time hanging out in the "Gathering Room", a common area on the ground floor of the Nutmeg Inn. Equipped with pool table and fireplace, it's a warm and inviting place for fellow guests at the inn to gather for a glass of wine and some delicious home-made pastries (baked right on the premises by Susan Goodman) after a day on the slopes. It's cozy, you can unwind, and you can have a few laughs while you watch the snow fall. We find that it's an easy four hour ride from where we live in central Rhode Island and plan to return. It's a good idea to call in advance, though. During ski season these little bed & breakfast inns can fill up quickly. Especially when they are as warm, gracious, and memorable as The Nutmeg Country Inn!
