My husband and I booked here last minute on new years eve morning. Overall it was just OK. If it's at all telling of my opinion, i can understand why this place still had availability at the last minute on NYE. Honestly, I would not recommend this place FOR THE PRICE as I'm sure you can find something a bit better. It is well located and the staff is friendly. Those who chooose to stay here should view this place more as a rustic camp/youth hostel type place (i.e. the basics only w/no frills) and the price you should pay should reflect that. New years or not, we didn't think the place was up to snuff for the price tag (200 bucks+ tax)
About me (and my husband): we are 30 something professionals who live in NYC (he's from S america, i'm from the midwest). We have traveled a lot & have stayed at multiple ski lodges & ski destination B&Bs in the US (CA, UT, ID, ME + Stowe VT) and in Chile (Santiago area AND Portillo). My husband worked at Kirkwood in Lake Tahoe as a ski instructor for 4 months when he was in college. When we are skiing we prefer basic, clean hotels w/breakfast included and good location. The luxury for us is the skiing part, so we dont look for much out of our lodging aside from a clean comfortable place to sleep after a day on the slopes.
Location ---the lodge is right near the base of the mountain
Plentiful continental breakfast (sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, 2 types of juices, bread, cereal, peanut butter and jams, bacon, pancakes and french toast, oranges)---> this was the best part of our stay --- beat our expectations after spending the night in our room.
SEPARATE building has a game room w/bar + restaurant --- we only went in AM for breakfast so can't comment on the bar/dinner scene but did see lots of board games and we appreciated that this wasn't in the hotel (for noise reasons)
Bed comfort was reasonable--- like a youth hostel and seemed to be clean.
Heating worked well and we were nice and warm on a very cold night
Shampoo and soap provided
Hot water worked fine.
Apparently there's a hot tub but i wouldn't go in a place that seems this relaxed about cleaning (see note below)
Could (and really should, for the price) be cleaner (i am NOT a neat freak at all. if i was, i would not have stayed here for even one night) and my husband agreed. First thing I noticed was the sink --- it had not been sprayed w/any sort of cleaner (as I demonstrated to my husband by wetting some tissue and cleaning it off properly). It wasn't filthy or anything, just clearly not well-cleaned. The shower curtain was white which was unfortunate bc you could see the pinkish mold at the bottom of it. Porch (which we only looked at- didn't go out bc too cold) had a half of a pizza and 6 pack of beer from previous guests frozen to the floor of it. Again, this was not a big deal for us, esp bc we weren't out there and we're pretty relaxed, but pretty i'd say this is pretty unacceptable by most standards.
The smell --- the whole place just sort of smells musty. It was the first thing my husband and i both noticed and it's pretty strong. We are relaxed so no biggie but this would bother some people i know (am thinking of my mother who has a really strong sense of smell)
As many others have mentioned: walls are paper thin... we could here every single step above us (and were both awakened in the middle of the night by upstairs noise- and my husband sleeps like a log)...If you are a light sleeper or have trouble falling back asleep if awakened I'd recommend booking a top floor as we couldn't hear anything from our neighbors (though that might be because they were quiet---? not sure)
Overall, this place would be more acceptable if it had been MUCH cheaper---but for the price we paid, I would not recommend (BUT TO BE FAIR: we stayed here on New Years eve). I would recommend for anyone who is super relaxed and on a tight budget ASSUMING they got a great deal. Otherwise i'd skip it and find a diff place in Dover or Wilmington.
Stay on top floor if possible. Ask for a mountain view. Bring ear plugs for noise.
