We spent a week or more at each of the following Time shares: Smuggler's Notch Village near Cambridge, Killington Summit Lodge near Rutland and Grand Summit Lodge at Mt. Snow.
We started in the North at Smugglers Notch on Sept. 27, 2013. For two weeks we had excellent foliage and weather. We had only one day of heavy rain.
The Notch itself is a marvelous spot with the road taking 90 degree turns around gigantic boulders. Down the road to Stowe there is a toll road on the right that takes you to the top of Vermont's highest peak, Mansfield Mountain. I give this area 4 stars. Ski resorts off season struggle to get five stars. We stayed at a 3 bedroom Presidential suite at the Owls which had a giant walk-in shower in the master bedroom, the other rooms were set up with multiple beds clearly intended for large families. Stowe is nearby and great to visit.
Next stop, Killington, Vt about 80 miles South. The Grand resort near Rutland, is located at the base of the second tallest mountain in Vermont. The view is the best of the three resorts as it is surrounded by mountain views. Unfortunately, the one heavy rain we had last week had knocked off many leaves and the foliage was not as good as further north. Still there are patches of color. Woodstock is nearby and great to visit. Calvin Coolidge home in Plymouth is nearby.
66 miles further South we reached our last stop, Mt. Snow at West Dover. We stayed at Grand Summit resort, which is sister resort to Grand resort. Both are very similar to each other. I swam at the outdoor pools and hot tubs in both. After Columbus Day, these resorts seemed empty. I had the pools to myself. Leaves were definitely only in patches. Locals said the peak came early this year.
1-For beauty stick to Vermont and leave New Hampshire and Mount Washington for another trip.
2-Come before Columbus day for foliage
3-Come after Columbus to avoid crowds but risk less foliage.
4- Vermont reminds me of Scottish Highlands with trees. The rows of mountains and valley are gorgeous even with leaves down as the view improves.
