Reading some of the reviews, I was worried, and really worried when we met a guy filling a garbage pail with ice at the top of the stairs, but we had a great package deal that was too good to pass up. Best advice we followed was to ask for a room on the 3rd floor. The entrance is on the 2nd floor so it is only 1 floor up & worth it not to have people walking over your head. The heater is indeed NOISY & turns on & off a lot. We turned it off to sleep & it would still turn on. The breakfast was really filling...don't know why people have complained...fresh fruit, good variety of breads/bagels to toast with cream cheese & other toppings, coffee was good 1 day & bad the next, oatmeal with toppings, meats, cold cereals, the potatoes were chewy one day and tolerable the next, powdered eggs (I think) but they tasted fine. We were able to fill our Thermos with hot water at the breakfast area to take to the mountain for tea/cocoa. Rooms were just remodeled. Bathroom was gorgeous & we didn't have hot water problems. Beds were super comfy. Room was adequate size but could have used more places to put suitcases, etc. There were only 2 of us, but 4 would be a crowd! No problems with the shuttle to the hill but I'd recommend having the restaurant call for the shuttle if you eat at the village at night. The staff was not helpful with off site food options and actually only mentioned "Whiskey Dicks" as a viable option, which we later found out is owned by Stratton anyways. There are other food places nearby. We went midweek & didn't have problems parking after returning from dinner either.

Room Tip: If you don't have kids and/or want quieter rooms...ask for a room on the 3rd floor. The entrance...

Rooms are small. Dorm style explains it well. Don't forget to add the unbearable smell that they make you leave the room for an hour to neutralize. Only to come back to the same horrific smell. Bar closes way to early!! In fact the bartender will easily tell a large group that he his closed, even though the shuttles run till 11. Seems like a $$ loss to us but we only work in the industry so what do we know. The hot tub looks like a bath house from 1960. Not sure if we will brave the free breakfast Tom morning. We will surely never ever return to Stratton Mountain unless its a day trip where we can go home to avoid paying $13.00 a drink.

If you are looking for a bed near the mountain, this is perfect. Anything else, look elsewhere. Positives: Good location, convenient shuttle. Negatives: Bathroom toilet clogged, the restaurant ventilation is busted so hotel fills up with smoke every night at dinner time, lobby is drenched with water from people coming in from outside, food weak, bathroom on bottom floor makes Sochi bathrooms look 4 star, room heating system goes off/on in 5 minute cycles. Did I mention the shuttle system worked well.

let me start off with saying that i did visit this place when it was formerly the in at stratton mountain. The updates did improve since changing over to black bear. Rooms seem like they had a face lift and the bathrooms are ALOT better. The free continental breakfast was ok, not great but ok to fuel up for the mountains. Unfortunetly this lodge still attracts a younger crowd for the most part, due to its inexpesive rates, So it can be noisy especially if your on a lower level. Ski boots + young adults having fun = alot of noise. The actual common area and the resturants in the lodge are not so great. Def use the shuttle to get to the mountain because the uphill walk in snowboard boots is no fun at all.

Room Tip: DO NOT stay on the ground floor. Ski boots and young crowd that the inexpensive lodge attracts will...

The recently redone rooms are ok. The look they were shooting for is good but the execution is inconsistent. Over all they are comfortable and attractive enough to come back to from a day of skiing.

Other reviews have captured are confirm that breakfasts are worth skipping and still are. We knew that and took the shuttle to the village walk to see what other options there were. We discovered that Mulligans was open for breakfast at 7:00am. My daughter had blueberry pancakes and I had bacon and eggs with toast and home fries. Free refill on coffee and they even had coffee to go at no extra charge. The food was great and I will be coming back when I stay at stratton. Also we had a nice table by the fireplace and the over all atmosphere was so much better than the Black Bear inn.

Good location. Parking good. Shuttle is crowded if hotel is crowded, like hubby drove us all up to Mtn with gear and then he came back, parked and walked back up. Breakfast- pass... No comment. Rooms are redone to acceptable standards. Common areas are more than tired. Hot tub- good news is that there was so much chlorine in it we weren't going to catch anything. Had to march up to front desk at midnight to complain about all the yelling in the party rooms in our hall. The place is a dorm -bottom line. If you know that up front and are cool with it you will be fine. The food options in Stratton are pretty much zero. There are places to eat but the quality is poor and cost is high. Like $12 for a children's grilled cheese- no drink included. We actually left our table w/o ordering because I'm just not going to pay that and I'm no cheapskate either! The best deal and food quality is Grizzlys on top floor of the main base lodge. $5PBR beers and $20 for a large very tasty pizza. This is our fourth year at Stratton as a family of 4 and I think next year we will go someplace else- and don't waste your $10/Pp to go to the pool at the athletic center!!

The Black Bear Lodge is very basic. This could be o.k. depending on your room price, BUT Stratton could have done much better when they "upgraded" this property. It's close to the slopes, which is it's best attribute. The rooms are dreary, how about getting rid of the cheap cafeteria table and hard chairs?? I'd expect at least a comfortable chair to sit in, along with a proper soap dish so I don't have a sloppy soap covered sink, and how about a tissue paper holder? That'd be a lot nicer than a ratty looking generic tissue box on the counter. How about real glasses not cheap plastic crap?? Really disappointing, it's a bummer when these resorts do 2nd best and think their clients will be fine with it, not me.

Room Tip: Don't stay here, the local condo's are much nicer.
