Ok, I admit it - I booked it mostly because it was inexpensive but the reviews here were relatively positive.... I have never, ever done an on line review for anything and am pretty easy to please. For the sake of fellow travelers, I have to review here.
The good news - we appear (from the outside) to have gotten the NICEST room in the place. The bad news - it was "rough" to say the least. The photos that appear on line are a MINIMUM of a decade old - probably closer to two. The trees that are mere shrubs in the photos now block windows, have dropped branches that remain and have cast mildew on the whole place.
Some of have commented that there are "hostel" type youth clients. What we saw was a regular pick up and drop off of what appeared to be spa and maint workers from the local higher end inns and spas. Some didn't speak English and were just dropped at night by a minivan. By appearances, 40-50% of the rooms in this place are just plain abandoned. 40% are occupied by these youth workers from nicer places (where they have apparently found it more economical to board their youth at the Season's Pass!). Finally, maybe 3-4 rooms (at most) appear open for the general public.
Grounds - abominable. Scruffy dirt parking lot with 2 abandoned cars and a pickup - one with flat tires. I would venture that a none of the following have graced the place this year - hedge trimmer, lawn mower, broom or paintbrush. The stairs leading to our room had a path through the dirt and sand (no one had swept it in months). Windows (sliding doors) to the apparently abandoned downstairs rooms had broken blinds and looked like something out of Freddy Krueger. Room: uh, pretty stale - bad smell, saggy bed, old furniture (chair legs sagged and almost broke when I sat in it), soiled lenolium floors, leaking faucet with broken handle, holes in walls, 13" tv with no remote, 40 year old refrigerator, some guy's shaved whiskers around the sink, mold, mildew and cracks all over and around the Bath Fitters install in the bathroom.... Family "living" in the room next to us had no car and consistently ran by on their way out to smoke in the lot or run across the street to the store.
If we had another place to go to quickly and hadn't pre-paid, I'd have been out of there in 15 seconds. Oh, and the nice pool in the pic!!?? Apparently abandoned a year or more ago we found out on check in. Given the shape of the rest of the place, and for the sake of public health, it's a good thing.
The location and price are good. We didn't see bugs but you bet we separated and washed EVERYTHING when we got home. The place is in worse shape than many of the abandoned hotels you see along the highway. My take is that the owners haven't put a nickel into it in 10 years and are milking the hostel $ and occasional guest $ out of it before it gets abandoned.
Do yourself a favor - spend an extra $20-30.
