“Classic Ski Lodge warm and inviting.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

If you are looking for modern efficient rooms then look elsewhere.. this is a simple older hotel with all the character and personality one would expect from a classic Vermont Ski Inn…. Our hosts (The Grimes) were friendly and courteous and the support staff were great. Our reservations were taken well ahead of time for the few days over Christmas by Molly who went out of her way to make sure we had just the right room, she checked with us over our stay to make sure everything was just right…. Great follow-up!
As mentioned, the rooms are nothing special but they are clean and the view we had of Mount Mansfield was perfect. The lounges in the main area of the hotel are very comfortable and there are several wood fireplaces where you can either get close and personal with your partner or mingle with the other patrons. The rooms are small and our room had a canopy bed... i would take the canopy down to give it a larger feel and the beds could use some upgrading.
Breakfast is included in your room rate and was a plentiful and very tasty buffet at Emily's downstairs… One of the servers of note was Zack who also worked in Coslin’s Pub. His personal attention and great attitude were very much appreciated by my wife and I during our stay.
If you are staying during the winter months then a sleigh ride is a must.. a half hour (roughly) sleigh ride thru the property while cuddled up in the back of an open cutter was perfect for our Christmas night.. a special shout out to the guys running the sleigh and of course to our horse DOC.. a beautiful Belgian workhorse.

Room Tip: ask for a view of Mount Mansfield... also get up early for some great morning photos.

A true classic vermont Inn! Great value. Beautiful scenerie. The beds are very comfy and the rooms are spacious! The hotel has a very relaxing feeling and will make you want to turn off your cell as well as leave your ipad, ipod, ....I DON'T care!!! Lol. It is well located and guests feel like family. They gave us a little surprise(chocolates) since it was Christmas. Nice touch!
Thanks for the great stay! Will be back with my girls!

Room Tip: Would reccomend a top floor.

Given the up and down reviews on TripAdvisor, we were not sure what to expect given how inexpensive our room was, but were pleasantly surprised. We booked a Ski Bum room (rm 38) thinking we would be lucky to have a TV, but the room proved to be darling, with a (albeit somewhat rickety) canopy bed, and lovely porch that overlooked the mountains. Room was right above dining and common area so a bit noisy, but didn't bother us. Also noted the slight musty smell other reviewers commented on, but again, didn't bother us.

The Inn itself is a classic Vermont/Swiss Inn, but is one of the better maintained properties we have stayed at in our years of ski bumming. The common area, or Living Room is a giant comfy hodgepodge of antique chairs, sofas and tables with plenty of room for multiple families to spread out. And with two fireplaces surrounded by cozy seating, it was is a common area that is truly enjoyable.

So why the title and middle rating? There was almost no presence at the front desk the entire 3+ days we stayed. Upon arrival, we stood with another couple trying to check in at the empty front desk for over 20 minutes before someone in the office acknowledged us. And we ended up leaving our keys and a note to check out because after three days of seeing no one at that desk I wasn't going to bother waiting around for checkout. Finally, while the food was quite good, the service at the pub and "fine-dining" restaurant at the Inn was also lacking. See my reviews of Emily's at Stowehof for more detail. Would definitely stay again, but it was an odd mix of good and bad. Would have given an overall rating of a 4 if even one staff member acknowledged us during our time there.

Room Tip: Ski Bum rooms are a great deal!

We stayed one night and were happy with the Stowehof. It's a bit older, but it was clean and our room was large and decent. The bed had a foam pad which made it soft and comfy, but my back revolted in the morning. I like the common spaces with fireplaces and large chairs. We had an ice storm during our stay and the power was out in the morning, so no hot water or for that matter, no water at all. Not much anyone could do about that. The Stowehof staff managed to pull off breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes, pancakes, etc. It was very nice and the dining room has great natural light. The temperature was comfortable even with the heat out.

The staff and owners were pleasant and I think it's worth the money.

We also had dinner in the restaurant. It's a bit expensive for the quality. I think I would try some other restaurants in Stowe next time. There are lots of good ones.

We had been here before so we weren't expecting a modern hotel. Our room last year was acceptable but this time everything was disappointing. We booked 3 nights on Expedia and it was an incredible rate but hey, they offer these rates so it's not as though a good deal should compensate for the subpar accommodations. The front desk person noted more than once that we booked on Expedia and our rate was a deal. So? We didn't make it here for the first night because we decided to stay longer with family but we arrived on Saturday to check in. We were surprised and disappointed by the room. The King bed - was 2 twins (of uneven heights) shoved together with twin bedding on each. The tv was a tiny little thing and the wifi in our room kept cutting off. The bathroom was old - well the whole place is old - but old is ok if it's maintained. There were holes smashed in the bathroom door that were never fixed, the ceiling was dirty and there was no waste basket in the bathroom ( more on that later.). The bathroom door didn't stay shut never mind lock. At least the water was hot and the water pressure was good. Our room door didn't fit well in the frame do it didn't close well - which did nothing to help with the noise. We were clearly above the kitchen ssn the noise lasted until after midnight - then started again first thing in the morning. When we checked in we asked to switch rooms but after seeing two other rooms that smelled musty and mildewy, we opted to stay put. The front desk told us that the hotel was full so those were the only options. However, I asked the bartender later if the hotel was busy and he looked at a list he had and said nope - not really. After getting very little sleep we went down to breakfast which was just bad. We aren't picky at all but this was pretty bad and there wasn't much to choose from. We went back to our room and housekeeping showed up. We asked for a trash can and she brought one. We told her we had been using the ice bucket to throw out trash and that we would leave it out. We just assumed she would take the ice bucket and clean it. Nope. She emptied the trash and just put it back where it was when we checked in. I know because I looked and there was dust and hair in it. Ewwwww. Who wants to put ice in that? We decided that although we blew off the first night and had paid for 3 nights, it wasn't worth staying so we packed up. When we checked out the woman at the front desk asked why and I just told her a little bit about our not sleeping seeing as we were over the kitchen. She asked why I didn't say something earlier. We did and you told us the place was full - which we found out later wasn't true. Why on earth would we think we'd get anywhere by coming back to the front desk? She said, after we were packed up, car warm, ready to go - that she'd give us the best room if we wanted to stay. She said a lot of people checked out. Really? Lots of people came for Friday night and left on Saturday morning? That sounds like [--]. We opted to lose our money and go home rather than stay another night and eat another cruddy breakfast. The disingenuous staff didn't make the experience any better. Oh well. We won't be going again. Judging from the defensive rebuttals to other people's bad reviews, the staff here isn't planning on making any improvements any time soon. There are a lot of choices in Stowe. I recommend shopping around. It's very nice that Alan Alda filmed a movie here 35 years ago but it's hardly a selling point 3 decades later when the place is as icky as it is.

This inn reminds me of a ski chalet! The drive up to the inn is absolutely beautiful, of course we were there in the fall so there was a lot of color. The room is not fancy at all, but it is clean and we had a back door to the balcony with a breathtaking view! Most of the staff were friendly, especially the bar staff! We wanted to sit outside by the pool on a Sunday night and asked if they would build us a fire in the firepit. They were happy to do it, even though they don't normally do that on Sundays.

The buffet breakfast was very good and you have to check out the elevator, but you have to find it first!

If you are looking for new and updated, this is not your place. But if you want a quiet place in the mountains, check it out. It is well worth the price!

What a wonderful weekend at the Stowehof Inn in Stowe, VT. This was my first stay at the Stowehof and it was delight. The staff was amazing and the accomodations were delightful and then there was the food! Truly a wonderful experience! Oh, and I almost forgot the scenery - we saw the most beautiful sunrise and the chickadees were fun to watch. I highly recommend the Stowehof for conventions or a just a weekend away.
