We stayed here in late September, and were pretty much satisfied by our experience. The location was very nice--about a 5-10 minute drive to downtown Stowe, but off the main road, so really scenic and quiet. We liked being able to hop in the car and hit the stores, restaurants, etc., really quickly.
The inn's property is gorgeous; we walked it, and it's just breathtaking to see. Our room (#33) was okay. Along with the hallways & staircases getting to it, it had a funky smell. If we had intended to spend a lot of time in our room, we may have been inclined to ask for a different room; the smell was a bit over- powering; luckily, it was in the mid-70's during our stay, and we made use of the doorwall, opening it to freshen the room. Things could have been a bit cleaner, but considering it's out in the woods, I am sure it can be difficult to get every spider that wanders in :-) I think the price was about right, though. The water pressure would come and go, but I know it's an old inn, so it didn't bother me too much.
We enjoyed our included-in-the-price breakfast. We've stayed in similarly-priced inns and only received the usual continental breakfast offerings; the Stowehof had a delicious spread of muffins, croissants, english muffins, juice, coffee, cereal and homemade granola as well as your choice of custom-omelette, french toast or pancakes, with bacon, sausage, home fries or yogurt. We tried everything, and found each to be delicious! We didn't dine at the pub or Emily's, though, so I cannot comment on that.
We were excited about the indoor jacuzzi and pool; however the first night, we were disappointed to find an out-of-order sign on the jacuzzi. We swam in the small indoor pool, though, and used the sauna. The next day, though, after a hot afternoon of sight-seeing, we decided to go for a dip, and found the jacuzzi repaired, which made us very happy.
We spent some time one evening after dinner sitting in the lounge, which is just adorable. The fireplaces weren't lit, but that was to be expected, as it was during a warm stretch. We had tea and coffee, and sat in the cute gaming-nook playing games. The view during the day from the lounge's windows is just beautiful, so take advantage of some relaxation-time in there.
The staff was very friendly, and though the literature in the rooms stated that for conservation purposes, they only changed towels upon request, we found that ours were changed daily, though we were perfectly happy to hang ours up daily for reuse. Yes, as previously mentioned posts stated, the king bed is two twins pushed together, but that didn't bother us, as we've encountered that before in other inns.
All in all, we loved the location, the breakfast, the staff and the scenery. The cleanliness could be improved, as could some of a bit of the outdated decor, but really, it is a quaint inn, and if you're looking for peace, lovely Vermont scenery, modest accommodations, and you're not snooty, I would say the Stowehof is the place for you.
