“Nice place but needs rededication”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

The establishment has a great location, it is a beautiful, traditional inn with a lovely dining room and some great amenities. The owner is very accommodating and very kind. He was very nice to us. Our shower wasn't working (no way to adjust the water temperature) and he allowed us to move to a nicer room. I had work to do, and he let me use the dining room one night to do it.

Having said that, the inn in need of some love. It needs some reinvestment in both time and money, and I'm not sure the owner's heart is in it. If you're only staying a couple of days midweek, it would be a good choice. The prices are good and you would be able to select a good room. But I don't know that I'd go on a weekend in season.

As an aside,.. If you don't know the story, the owners were a married professional couple who left the rat race and opened an inn in Vermont. It's a great story, one I aspire to, but it has an unhappy ending. One of the partners died. By all accounts she was a wonderful person. Everyone in town seems to have liked her a great deal. That was nearly a year ago, so it should come as no surprise that the place has gone a bit off track. I hope to see it blossom again.

We just returned from four days of cross country skiing. The Inn was your perfect New England get away. The room was small but very homey. Randy, the Inn keeper was very informative and was a wealth of information, he also was the chef. The friendliness of the staff made you feel at home. The breakfast was the most diverse and delicious I have ever eaten. We were offered hot cider and home made soup après ski. My husband and I will definitely stay here next year.

We just got back from a super romantic Vermont vacation on which we got engaged!
When planning we had looked for a comfortable, not too expensive inn to spend a week in Stowe and I feel like we hit the jackpot. We had chosen the Master Bedroom based on positive recommendations here. It was a very spacious yet cozy room with a gas fireplace and it's own little sofa/tv area. It was perfect to rearrange all our ski gear and warm up after a day on the mountain.
Randy the innkeeper was super helpful and had great suggestions on restaurants and activities in the area. My now fiance had arranged for Randy to sneak a bottle of champagne into our room, which he gladly helped out with.
Breakfast was amazing! Whenever locals asked us where we were staying their eyes lit up and they mentioned breakfast right away. It was phenomenal and with fresh, local ingredients. Make sure you try The Vermonter (the ham was the best we had ever had) and the Greek omelet!
This is a cozy inn, not your luxury, anonymous hotel. Everything had a personal touch to it and we truly loved it. Clean, cozy, excellent location and the world's best breakfast all at a great value. We hope to come back one day!

Room Tip: We loved the Master Bedroom with its fireplace and lots of space but as it is right by the inn entra...

We spent two nights at The Gables just before Christmas hoping to ski at Trapps. Mother Nature had other plans sending rain and ice to Stowe, but we still had a great time. Randy was super accommodating and gave us some good restaurant suggestions. The rest of the staff was outstanding too, serving an excellent breakfast despite a power outage on our first morning (complete with cowboy coffee and toast from the broiler!). Our queen room was clean & cozy, yet plenty big enough for all of our ski stuff. Great value here - we'd definitely stay again.

We arrived late, in the midst of a snow storm and our host, Randy was there to greet us with a warm welcome. The inn is 150 years old with 12 inch wooden boards, creaky floors and comfortable furniture in the living room to sit around and chat! I've read other reviews where people have not been happy about the noise but it is part of the charm. Randy states this on his website, which is pretty accurate as to what you'll get when you book your stay. For me, it's not the amenities that make a place, but the people, and Randy and his staff are very friendly, warm and welcoming. Breakfast is hot and there are many local specialties from which to choose (a tough competition between Vermont and Quebec maple syrup!). Randy serves soup and hot cider later in the day as well as a good walnut cake (which seemed to disappear a lot during our stay!).

Because of the ice storm, we weren't able to go x-c skiing, but Randy and staff recommended various things to see and do to keep us still active and not get bored. The Swimming Hole is an exercise place (weights and cardio equipment) with a large pool if you like to swim. One can get passes for the day or for the week. Burlington isn't far away and has a quaint pedestrian-friendly shopping area with local and international shops. Waterbury is home to Green Mountain Coffee which is a great stop either on your way up to Stowe or as you leave. There is also a wonderful craft store called Stowe Craft + Design that hosts many local artists. No shortage of things to see and do! We'll come back!

We had a wonderful time - we booked one of their carriage house rooms for the fireplace and dog-friendliness, and they upgraded us to the riverview cottage, great little place with a dual-sided wood burning fireplace. The innkeeper are friendly and accommodating, and the breakfast is great, served in their restaurant so there is lots too choose from.

Yes it is old a floors sometimes creak. But it is over 150 years old. Outstanding breakfasts and innkeeper Randy goes overboard to be very helpful. He went out of his way to please and offered great suggestions for local dining. Location is perfect for visiting Stowe area.

Room Tip: Master room very large with new bathroom.
