The Trapp Family Lodge reminds me very much of Austrian hotels I've experienced many times. The public areas are casual and people-friendly, the lounge and library are comfortable, and the dining rooms are a bit more formal. Everybody wears a smile - employees and guests alike - and the place feels warm and comfortable. The hotel is imbued with a proper Austrian mode of decoration and hospitality. I was suprised that it didn't feel too American.
I brought a group of 45 to this place in November and most of the rooms I saw in the lodge seemed to be similar to each other. Furniture was heavy and paint-decorated with alpine motifs. I had a comfortable king bed with four feather pillows and a down comforter. There was a desk, cabinet for television, chest, sofa, and end tables. Framed family photographs adorn the walls. Lighting was ample at the desk, at bedside, and by the sofa. With simple and direct decor, the emphasis is on the bed and bed linens rather than on polished wood or other materials like in our luxury hotels. There seemed to be a balcony in most rooms. The view of the mountains from my room was breathtaking. The bath and dressing area was small, but spotlessly clean. There was a blow drier, iron & ironing board, plenty of towels, and shampoos and lotions and soaps by Gilcrest & Soames.
I had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon showing of "Maria Remembers" in the screening room, tea and cookies in the library, a cocktail in the lounge, and a fine dinner in the dining room. I hiked up to the stone chapel on the mountainside, visited the bakery and gift shop, and paid a visit to the graves of deceased Trapp family members at the small graveyard to the left of the hotel. The hike to the chapel is pleasant. It takes roughly forty-five minutes to go up and back and the hike isn't too rigorous.
No real complaints...though, like Bavarian hotels, the temperature inside was too warm for me...My guess is that my room temperature must have been in the low seventies. Minor complaints aside, I enjoyed my experience at Trapp Family Lodge and almost all of my travelers want to come back. To have forty people tell you that you have to run a trip again is a powerful recommendation. I'll be back!
