“Dated and Faded.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2010

Not sure where these other reviewers stayed, but I stayed at Topnotch, where I had stayed once about 10 years ago and again about 5 years ago. There has been little visible renovation since then. The Spa is the exception. The Spa is expensive and if that's what you want, then you will be pleased. However, the small rooms, dirty carpets, thin walls, '70's ambiance, and as many dogs as human guests says "relaxed" just a little too much. And paying $600 a night for a tiny room and a pool full of hotel guests left little room to appreciate peace and quiet. It would appear Topnotch is trading on its reputation about 5 years too long. For the same money you can stay 1 mile away at the Stowe Mountain Lodge, which is incomparably better.

We go to Topnotch a couple of times per year and usually stay for the weekend and relax in the spa.
The staff is so helpful and always there when you need them without feeling crowded by them.
The rooms are nice, not my style but that isn't their fault.
The spa is to die for. Best massages we have ever had were at Topnotch. The relaxation rooms, the sauna, steam, outdoor pool and whirlpool, it's all amazing!
Spend a weekend in the spa, you won't be sorry!!

Just returned from a 4 day vacation at the Topnotch. The resort is perfectly situated equidistant between the town of Stowe and Mount Mansfield, with a beautiful view of the mountain. We enjoyed the warm fire in the lobby fireplace that greeted us when we returned from a long day of skiing. The fresh baked cookies, tea and fruit we also a nice touch. The staff was extremely friendly and helpfu. Norma's restaurant had a wonderful atmosphere, helpful service and great food. I would recommend the Duck as well as trying one of the local cheeses. I would highly recommend the Cabot, cave-aged cheddar. The indoor pool area was very nice and my 17 mos old son enjoyed the pool. My husband and I liked the outdoor hottub and heated pool. The spa was also very nice, and my massage was excellent. Our room was very clean and well-appointed, but not the highlight of our trip

We stayed two nights in their Junior Suite for a romantic birthday getaway and skiing. We had a superb dinner at their restaurant, Norma's. Our waiter, Eric, was fun and fast, and the hostess, Meredith, was particularly attentive and informative about the menu. The bartenders at both Norma's and the Buttertub were friendly and knowledgeable about specialty martinis. One of my favorite activities was the daily tea time in the lobby. Drinking a hot cup of Earl Grey with cookies in front of a roaring fire after a day of skiing was terrific.

Our room was spacious, clean, and inviting. Every staff member we met was friendly. This was our first, but certainly not last, trip to Topnotch.

We've had 3 vacations at Topnotch (2 winter and 1 summer) and they just keep getting better and better. The atmosphere at Topnotch is just perfect for a ski and tennis resort. Everything at Topnotch is lovely without being over the top or pretentious. The renovation to the hotel lobby was well done, offering more space for guests to relax in the lobby. The staff is friendly and eager to help make guests comfortable. The rooms in the hotel are bright, comfortable, and well decorated. (Just note resort homes, which may offer a better deal, are decorated to each individual owner's style and tastes and therefore are not necessarily similar in style to the rooms in the hotel itself- where we prefer to stay). Topnotch's strength is its pools and Spa- and like no other in Stowe. The outdoor pools (one for adults only) and hot tub is spectacularly designed giving an expansive view of the mountain. The indoor pool room is beautiful. The spa and spa services are excellent. Try a yoga class on the deck outside in the summer and follow with a shiatsu massage. Or Topnotch offers a tennis program which is a plus for vacationers in the summer and winter. The indoor pool and hot tub offers skiiers a great place to relax after a day of skiing and it is easy to stay put for the evening at Norma's for dinner, and sit by the roaring fire in the lobby, rather then head into town. The food Norma's is local and organic. The menu is varied and offers a kid's menu. Smores for dessert in the fire pit outside is a highlight for kids and adults! And it is good to know that Topnotch has gone green and is recycling and offers guests the opportunity to do so with the use of less towels, etc. After taking a tour at most other hotels in Stowe it is clear that Topnotch stands alone. Don't miss this special place.

From its charming, attentive, and highly professional staff to its impressive array of treatments, fitness facilities, and culinary delights, Topnotch offers both relaxation and refinement. Staff members greet guests with genuine pleasure, and go to great lengths to fulfill their requests. They create a tranquil, restful atmosphere, in which it's easy to slow down and unwind. Special touches abound. During the day, details such as imaginative, subtle landscaping add to the visual appeal. At night the soft glow of the pools' underwater illumination and the flickering of flames in the outdoor fire bowls create a sense of magic. I have been fortunate enough to stay at some of the world's finest hotels. Topnotch is among them.
