“If it wasn't for Karen Wisehart this place would be really bad!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2012

I responded to the Best Westerns request to rate this hotel, here is what I said;

Very dated, the room smelled mouldy we had to open the windows. There was no sign on the outer doors telling us what section to find the room. The clerk at the check in desk just said our room was in section "B"? We rode back and forth looking for "B" and couldn't find it? Once we did we entered through the back door and there was an over powering stench of rotten food in the stairwell. I only booked the room since the manager was responding to the comments posted on Trip Advisor; I felt it would be a good hotel with a manager who obviously cared that much about customer service and happiness.

Within a day Karen responded with this;

Thank you for completing the survey regarding your recent stay at our property.

On behalf of our entire team, I would like to apologize for not exceeding your expectations. I noticed you were in room XXX, one of our suites. I had that room checked and we did indeed need to pull the air conditioner as there were some issues with the chamber that holds the water, which we believe caused the musty odor. The suites and that stair entrance (we call A) are the last of our room updates that are scheduled for the end of this year. I'm so sorry for the confusion on the location as the entrance B is not labeled and something internally that we use - it is actually our "Conference Entrance". Thank you for giving us the guest perspective that we needed to help us improve.

I'm sorry you had a less than satisfactory experience at our hotel. I have credited your card $25 for the discomfort of the smell in your room. Please know that we are taking your feedback to heart and hope that you will consider staying with us again so that we can have another chance to provide you with a superior experience. Thank you again for your time.

Sincerely,

Karen Wisehart

I"m so glad you recieved my first response, I worry sometimes when I dont' hear back from a guest and the communication has been lost. We really do appreciate the feedback that we receive from all of our surveys and on line reviews - it's how we learn and how we improve on our operations and guest services. I will certainly inform the Executive Chef of your dissatisfaction with the prime rib. Thank you again for your review and for sharing your thoughts about our hotel.

My wife, 4 year old daughter and I recently traveled to Vermont to visit family and for a vacation. When traveling Best Western usually isn't a place I would even look at but because of limited full service hotel availability in the area, I did some research and this looked like a decent option.

Check in was easy and we were given a room on the third floor. Room was clean with 2 double beds, flat screen TV, small sitting area and desk. Bathroom was clean with plenty of towels. The shower water pressure was a little weak but nothing unbearable for a two night stay.

Staff was generally friendly however one employee when greeted by me did not return the greeting or even make eye contact. It was explained to me by management (when I noted this in an internal review) that employees are given customer service training but this employee was new and had not received this training yet. My take on this is to make sure your employees are fully trained on all facets before beginning their job but I guess this sometimes is not feasible.

The included breakfast was plentiful and of high quality. The breakfast area did seem to get overwhelmingly busy at times which lead to no place to sit. One nice touch (that my daughter loved) was fresh baked cookies and milk served nightly at 8pm.

One night for dinner we dined at one of the onsite restaurants, The Upper Deck Pub. It was quite busy and the servers seemed VERY overwhelmed. It was obvious that staffing was not up to the level it needed to be to accommodate the crowd. We waited quite a long time before we were acknowledged and then another long period before our orders were taken. The food was fine and the prices very reasonable.

Overall I was very pleased with this stay and I would consider staying here again if needing a hotel in the area.

Thank you for sharing your overall experience at our hotel. I’m glad your first experience at our property was positive and that you had a chance to enjoy breakfast, the restaurant and the cookies and milk. I’m sorry we had a staff member that was in training and not up to speed with the customer service we expect. Trip Advisor reviews are a perfect training tool for all of our employees and I’m thankful for the opportunity to have them to use for that purpose - so thank you for taking the time to point out where we can improve as well as all the great things we are doing right.

Stayed 5 nights, had a great time, enjoyed the breakfast of bagels, hard-boiled eggs, sausage egg and cheese bisquits that you heat in the microwave and yogurt. LOVED the comfy bed and squishy pillows. Had a lovely time at the pool, until.....rowdy boys that were on some kind of teams that kept taking over the pool area with their yelling, pushing, and verbal abuse. To the hotel staff's credit they did try to handle the situation time and again, but in the end there were always more of them and the front desk finally said there was nothing they could do about it. We wanted to stay an extra night and even though they were full, we were allowed to change rooms and stay. Ended up leaving early on a bad note because we finally couldn't relax due to the hostel takeover of the pool. I hope they decide to do something about that so that everyone has a chance to enjoy their stay. Overall enjoyed it very much, and South Burlington is very charming.

Room Tip: King room has a refrigerator and microwave and is very spacious. Queen room is VERY small. Closets a...

Thank you for your very fair review of our property. I’m so glad you had a chance to enjoy our amenities and that you enjoyed our beds and pillows - I’m very sorry for the experience you had with the other guests at our hotel and that you had to leave the hotel earlier than planned. As a manager of the hotel, it’s a very difficult decision to make to have to remove a guest or a group from the premise. I appreciate your perspective as this is always the reason we do end up taking action, because it’s not fair to all of our other guests. I’m sorry we didn’t act sooner in this case and certainly will learn from this experience. Please know that this is not a common incident at our hotel. We take great pride in our property and do our best to accommodate groups that we believe will respect our property and our other guests. Thank you again for your review and perspective.

We stayed here for one night in a room with two double beds, since my husband wanted to see a concert here in Burlington and this hotel which was next door offered a discount when you mention the venue. Hotel is clean but a bit dated, nice indoor and outdoor pool, rooms are a bit on the small side, but beds are comfortable, and continental breakfast was just ok. The warm cookies at 8pm were delicious though! Hotel is not really near anything unless you are going to the airport, but it's only about a 10 or 15 minute drive to the harbourfront and city centre. All in all was an ok stay for me but for the price (paid $120 for the night) I have no complaints.

We are indeed a very short walk to Higher Ground and have a fantastic relationship with the great people at that venue. I'm glad you had a chance to catch what I'm sure was a great show and also experience Burlington. We continue to update our property and have most of our rooms renovated with a handful left to complete once we get into our slower season. Thank you for your review and the great scores on cleanliness and servcie, we hope to see you again in the future!

While we didn't have time to try the on-site restaurant which looked fancy and pools (indoor and an outdoor) we did like that the rooms were clean, we got a room overlooking the inner garden area rather than the parking lot, and it was secluded from the traffic of the main road. They were painting the main lobby when we arrived so it looked a little under construction, but nice to see them doing improvements. The rooms seem to be renovated from what they were.

We got friendly assistance from the front desk at all hours, especially while using the business center. The breakfast was good, lots of options like muffins, boiled eggs, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, waffles, different juices and coffee/tea, egg/ham/cheese breakfast sandwiches.

It was hard to find this property because it's back off the road, so our tip is to turn when you see a Starbucks. :)

Too bad it's not in walking distance to downtown Church St., but when Burlington allows for your first 2 hours of parking free when you get there it makes it ok and it's not that far of a drive away.

Overall a really good experience and we would return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the ice machine and facing the garden.

The hotel was very clean. The rooms are quite small. That was not a problem as we were not in the room much, but there really is room only for the bed. The bed was on the firm side, but okay. The bedding was clean and comfortable. Bathroom was clean (again on the small side) but adequate. Breakfast was typical--muffins, bagels, hard boiled eggs, cereal. I enjoyed the fresh fruit they had out. I would stay here again, although I'm not sure there would be enough room for a family in one of these rooms.

Thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the room type was uncomfortable for you, we do have some rooms that have one queen bed and they are indeed a bit smaller than the majority of our rooms that have two beds. And you are correct, definitely not large enough for a family - we have many other room types that would be more suitable. I'm glad you had a nice stay otherwise and appreicate the positive feedback about the cleanliness and great scores on service!

The hotel was very clean, comfortable (esp the beds and linens), friendly staff, delicious cookies at 8pm and good breakfast with waffles and sausage sandwiches, and hard boiled eggs. The Windjammer Restaurant was delicious with a great salad bar and local cheeses served. The pool indoor and outdoor was clean and enjoyable.
