My husband and I love Magic Hat brews and were excited to visit the brewery during our trip to Burlington this year. Sadly, we were left with a bad taste in our mouth.
The tasting room and the gift shop is all in one room, and considering the sheer amount of stuff they sell, the room is a bit small for everything. You do get four free tastings, which is nice, but its so poorly organized that we both got to taste one beer in 20 mins before leaving. It was crowded on a Saturday afternoon (which I expected), but there's absolutely no system to the tastings. We finally got to the front of the bar and waited, I kid you not, 20 minutes. We tried to flag down one of the two bartenders numerous times, and were continually ignored. We also don't like to be rude and understood that they're trying to serve a lot of people, but 20 mins is way too long to wait for a tasting. At one point, one of the bartenders (a girl, very enthusiastic) announced that she would start at one end of the bar and work her way down. When she got to us, we were ignored again! We decided to wait one more round, and after we saw that she was continually waiting on a group at the end of the bar, people who hadn't been waiting more than 5 mins, we just left.
We came with other people, and they gave us one of their samples. We tried the Apple Pie, and it tasted like generic beer, so I wish I had tried their Ourtoberfest instead. Oh well.
They also won't let you get all your tastings at once. They give you one, and then tell you to go to the back of the line to get your next one. To taste four beers, you could easily be there at least an hour. Normally, I'd be fine with that, but because there's no order to the madness, and you're running into people shopping in the gift store and it's overall, very chaotic, we just left. We planned on getting a growler and a few other small memorabilia, but they lost our business that day. No one in our small group had fun there and we were all disappointed.
I still love Magic Hat beer and will continue to drink it, but I wouldn't recommend the tasting room unless you go on a Monday morning or something when no one will be there. I would rather have paid for my samples and been able to get some service and enjoy the experience.
