“Incredible Lake and Mountain Views while Dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Any visitor to Burlington/Shelburne, VT should not miss Shelburne Farms. Shelburne Farms is a 1400 acre working farm and is also a national historic landmark. If you visit during the day, you can take the kids to the breeding barn to pet baby animals and learn about farming. If you don't have kids, plan for either a brunch or dinner at the Inn at Shelburne Farms to not only have a wonderful meal but also to see breathtaking views of the Lake Champlain and the mountains of New York on the other side of the lake. The setting is magnificent, with grassy lawns, gardens, and views of the lake. Make your reservation but arrive at least a 1/2 hour early to explore the grounds before dinner, and the Inn itself, which is preserved estate of the Vanderbilt Web family - built 1887 - 1900. If you've never visited Shelburne Farms, be sure to add it to your itinerary if you are in the Burlington/Shelburne area. It's an unforgettable experience.

“Always a lovely brunch and dynamite view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

I have had brunch with friends or family four times this summer at the inn. Every time service was prompt, food was fresh and delicious ( a rotating menu based on the farm's ingredients that are available) and the view alone makes the dining experience worth every penny. They are also very family friendly. My daughter enjoyed running on their big lawn that overlooks the lake while we waited for breakfast. Eating here has become a tradition for us.

“Something to cherish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

We will cherish the memory of our meals at the Shelburne Inn. Dinner on the terrace as the sun sets over Lake Champlain: life doesn't get any better. Then the food arrives and life does get better yet. The Shelburne Farm grows many fo the ingredients used in the menu. Our dinners wer perfectly prepared, beautifully presented and delicious.

“If the food isn't good, little else matters”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

I am a fan of and regular visitor to Shelburne Farms, which means that I want it to succeed and excel. Restaurants are a mine field for any institution since turnover, budgetary concerns and management issues are all at play on any given day. On my most recent visit, I had invited guests along for breakfast. Whereas the hostess and servers met expectations, the food did not. Only one person at the table reported a satisfactory experience. In addition, no one seemed to be checking on the coffee thermoses. A mediocre breakfast and lukewarm coffee make one wondering what is going on. There have been less than happy years in the past followed by a course correction that rekindled lost enthusiasms. I hope that is the case this time.
In the meantime, I suggest that you avoid the eggs benedict.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

The location is spectacular. Just amazing. Not to miss. However, we had a terrible experience with the dining room. We were staying nearby and decided to come for breakfast on our way to Montreal. We reserved for 9:15 am as we wanted to visit the farm and museum and then had a significant drive ahead. We arrived on time and were told that we could have a table with a view of the grounds in "just a few minutes." We accepted the offer and went for a 5 minute stroll, then checked back. We were told "just a few minutes again" and strolled another 5 minutes. Then we were told "they are just clearing the table" so we sat in the hallway expecting to be seated momentarily. Long and short of it, we weren't seated until 9:50. Had we been told it would be half an hour or more, we would not have accepted the offer. Then, we waited 10 minutes to be noticed by the waitress. They were very understaffed, with young and poorly trained employees. More than half the tables were empty but they could hardly keep up. Finally we waived down a waitress. I ordered a tea and asked for cream and honey. Got the tea but nothing else. Waited another 10 minutes to flag down absent staff person and 10 minutes later got honey and cream . . . for my cold tea. It went on like this throughout the meal, which took forever. The food itself was a disappointment. STANDARD hotel dishes possibly prepared with farm fresh ingredients. But who can tell the difference when the dishes offered are nothing special themselves, not inventive or creative. Yes, the eggs Benedict were good, and so were the pancakes. Omelette was average and small, with scant fillings. But with all those acres of fresh produce, cheeses and meats, why not offer something out of the ordinary? At the height of summer, there were no greens to be had, no tomatoes, no fresh herbs. Dishes came with overcooked/rewarmed potatoes. Served with tabasco and catsup. Can't make your own pesto, chutney, salsa, or other yummy sauce? We grow our own veggies and keep chickens, in the Bay Area, and know what farm fresh means, and what can be created from a kitchen garden, even for breakfast. This place may have been the pioneer, and we are grateful for their leadership in the farm to table movement. But, there are 1000 places that do it better now. I could have whipped up something delicious myself, in much less time, using a much wider variety of all-fresh ingredients. Quality OK but disappointing given the potential, taste average, offerings totally standard, serving sizes from small to normal, service terrible, cost mid-high, location spectacular. Time for a new chef, new menu, and new management.
