“Unforgettable beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Just got back from another stay at Inn at S.B. This property is so beautiful that it stays in my memory all year. I truly love the landscape, the winding drive (over a mile) from the entrance gate to the inn building on the lake, the huge strange barn out of a Nordic fairy tale, the herds of cows, the rolling landscape, the horse-drawn wagons, the cheese-making and the night sky! It's hard to add to what others have said, but I really do not regret any stay here. As others have said, no TV, no air conditioning, and the furniture is old (almost all original to the house). The main public rooms downstairs are very special, especially on a cool fall night when the fireplaces are lit. Flower bouquets are everywhere. Charming small bar just outside the dining room. Drinks on the lawn overlooking Lake Champlain are a must. The gardens keep improving from several years ago, and I know they continue this good work. Cheese and apples come in every room. Are there any flies in the ointment? Little ones, but not worth staying away. We had the Webb room (one of the big ones) and the bed is a little annoying (not comfortable to read in bed, not given enough pillows, mattress does not fill up space within the bedstead so you cannot avoid the chilly side pieces). Restaurant not as good as it used to be, but breakfast is great, the wine list is great, coffee is strong. (Please keep offering coffee at breakfast - we should not have to look for you.) Thanks too for attentive service when guests first arrive. I love the library too and the South Porch. Best of all is the sense of space -- and the quiet. And that incredible sky. And the mountain views.

The Inn at Shelburne Farms is a very special place - it's hard to beat sitting in an Adirondak chair looking at the Adirondaks across Lake Champlain at sunset, with a cocktail or glass of wine. The inn is a Vanderbilt summer home circa 1899, on a working model farm; it's not exactly a luxury hotel (no heat or AC) but it's the height of luxury in a different way. Rooms vary greatly, so choose carefully.

But something's gone wrong in the restaurant, which is integral to the experience. Dishes have been made more complicated (perhaps because prices were raised to big-city levels?) and now seem less than the sum of their parts. Ingredients, many local, are still excellent (the lamb especially) and breakfast is too. Service is fine throughout.

Room Tip: Website offers good guidance. Lake view worth it. Southerly rooms, further from kitchen, perhaps qui...

Shelburne farms is a great location as is the Inn. Dining on the patio is great when the weather allows. Menu is high quality, but expensive. The issues are not always consistent quality and usually very modest service. Don't be in a hurry for your meal. There are several staff, but they don't seem to be well organized. It takes a long time to give an order and a very long time to get the food. If you need something during the meal getting the attention of staff is a challenge. Good for a special occasion when you are in no hurry.

Let me begin by stating that there aren't too many places that can measure up to Shelburne Farms with all the marvelous trails, impressive buildings and friendly staff. And that's just if you come for a day visit. If you stay at the Inn or surrounding buildings, it's that much better. We've stayed at the Inn, White Room, in the past and loved it! But, if you really want to experience the Farm at it's most bucolic, I'd recommend the Treehouse. It is a self-contained structure with kitchen, small bathroom and wonderful living, sleeping area. It also has a deck that "hangs" over the lake shore (app. 100 ft. above) where we do a lot of grilling (grill comes with the accomodations). The Treehouse is not for everyone however. You need a certain amount of mobility to walk up a small hill of app. 150 feet. Also, the bathroom is small: so, if you're a "hefty" person, you may have some "issues" using the shower (which is not real large). But, if those are not problems for you, then DON'T pass this one up. You will have an absolutely wonderful time here (We've been booking the Treehouse for 4 years and hope to do so for many years to come). IT IS FABULOUS!!

Room Tip: if you want more social interaction, book at the Inn proper. And do frequent the restaurant: crème b...

Plan to stay at your rich aunt's gilded era estate. I have stayed at Shelburne Farms at least 20 times over the last 25 years and I can say without hesitation it is my favorite place on earth. Each room is unique, many with stunning views of the lake and all including historic antiques. Complimentary high tea with scones, finger sandwiches and cookies are served at 3:30 and will be your first introduction to the Inn's exceptional cuisine -- nearly all products (from beef to tomatoes) are grown on the property using sustainable and organic farming practices. Breakfast and dinner can be taken either in the opulent marble dining room or the stunning terrace overlooking the lake. On my most recent visit the staff expertly put together a special birthday dinner for me a 16 friends in their private dining room. Not only was a food terrific, the special attention that each staff member paid to my event was indicative of the overall thoughtfulness of the Inn's team.

What you won't find here can be looked at as a luxury as much as some might look at it a detriment. You will not find internet in the room, nor air conditioning, nor flat-screen TVs (or any TVs for that matter) or Ipod docks. Instead, Shelburne Farms allows your to disconnect from our modern world and step back into the graciousness of another era and enjoy a book in the sprawling library, billiards in the game room or a classic cocktail on the Adirondack chairs dotting the rolling lawns. Shelburne Farms has managed to find the sweet spot so elusive to many of this country's turn-of-the-century estates: it has not become a mausoleum-like tribute to some long forgotten industrialist nor a stuffy $1,200 a night paean to over the top extravagance. Instead, in its unassuming way, the Inn has encapsulated the hospitality of a bygone era while tweaking it ever so slightly for today's modern sensibilities. The Inn at Shelburne Farms is nothing short of extraordinary.

Our son recently got married at The Coach Barn this past Labor Day Week-end. We stayed in the beautiful Overlook Room at The Shelburne Inn during that week-end and had a wonderful experience. Staying there really made the whole experience more special. Our room was large and beautiful, the restaurant was lovely for breakfast and the entire property is so special. So peaceful and quiet. All the rooms are uniquely furnished and the downstairs library and lounge are beautifully appointed. It hearkened back to a simpler, and elegant time. Highly recommended both for staying at The Inn and holding a wedding at The Coach Barn overlooking the beautiful lake.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor might be hot in the summer as there is no air conditioning. I would take...

Lovely setting, fantastic walking, water access and tours. Restaurant meal was quite good, but service was below average given that it wasn't peak, busy time. Breathtaking wedding was held at the property's Brick House -- stumbling across was a treat.
