Every year my family books at least half a dozen rooms in Rutland for Thanksgiving night and we go there after dinner at a relative's house. For the past few years we've stayed at the Red Roof Inn, having tried the others in town and having decided it was best.
Next year we'll switch back, probably to the Holiday Inn or the Ramada because we found conditions have deteriorated at the Red Roof.
Five of us paid more than $90 (with tax) each for our rooms and the sixth, because he stayed there the night before, got a daily rate of $62. Apparently that rate didn't include cleaning - the room was untouched and a bag of towels was left outside the door. And it wasn't because his family was in the room during the day - they spent the entire day at Thanksgiving with the rest of us. The other rooms were booked for one night only, and were reasonably clean. But they looked shabbier than they had the year before, with peeling veneer and paint in some of them.
At the pool, the sauna was out of service. The sign announcing this was curled and yellowed, so we figured it had been out of service for a while. We had not been told this, however, when we booked. We had to go to the front desk to get towels for the pool and were given three because that was supposedly all they had. Then a surly staff member closed the pool at 9 p.m. and insisted that the sign saying it was open until 10 p.m. meant weekends only. We probably should have pointed out that we were paying weekend rates because of the holiday. But we just left.
Aside from the outstandingly cheery and helpful front desk manager who checked us in, we found the staff unpleasant, the service inadequate and the facilities poorly maintained.
