“Expensive for what you get”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

We tried a bakery item (very good) and a pizza. The pizza was a bit sparse on the toppings and the bottom of the thin crust was partly burnt. Overall, it was okay, but not worth the cost.

“Locally Owned Vegetarian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

This locally owned bakery specializes in locally-sourced organic ingredients. I found the wood-fired pizzas to be excellent and the salads very fresh. The bakery is located next to Richmond's Volunteer Park, so it's really nice for kids to combine play time with breakfast, lunch or dinner out.

“It's the quality of food - not the service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Great gluten-free choices for breakfast which is very rare around here. We go there in the morning on the way to work. Sometimes the service is not great. For some reason, they only keep one person at the register getting drinks while others are doing work in the kitchen area (or talking). One of them should step up when it's busy. But the variety of choices and the chai tea latte is the best in the area. In the summer, the small porch in the back is great. Good place for family but not super comfortable.

“service needed some work.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

I have only tried it once and came at the end of the day, so I may have been there at an off moment. When walking in on Saturday at 255pm (they close at 3pm), a worker outside said "the register is closed" as she passed us in the doorway. We noticed other people ordering coffee and paying so we ordered some cookies to go (10 maple buttons=$15). Someone came up to the counter after us and ordered more food so they clearly had not "closed the register". Then, the same person who said the register was closed announced to the completely full dining room that the front door was now locked and everyone would have to leave through the side door. We left immediately after paying and exited through the side door. There was a metal shelf by the sidewalk that leads back to the parking lot and we had to squeeze through a small opening between this shelf and some bush with thorns that snagged our coats. Some people behind us stopped and seemed to contemplate turning around at the near impasse, but then squeezed through reluctantly. Cookies were good. I'll definitely try it again, but will likely go earlier when the front door is still open and the staff is still fresh.

“Cold day - hot food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

On the snowy day of the Richmond Country Fair complete with wagon rides, crafts and goodies for sale, my hot lunch that I got at On The Rise just hit the spot. Great tasting original recipe soup and bread.
