During a recent trip to the Grand Isles in Vermont, my husband and I spent three very nice nights here. We had a room on the top floor facing the lake. It was a very quiet and comfortable room with a spacious bathroom equipped with a clawfoot tub and a large shower with seating and plenty of room to manuveur. The bedroom area was cozy but not so small that you bump into each other (and we had lots of luggage taking up floor space). Lovely decor, very comfy queen bed, good air conditioning (window unit) and super water power in both shower and tub (rather a luxury in that area). Small window seat provided a nice lake view. Staff was very personable and helpful without being intrusive. Many college-age kids work there during summers who were terribly sweet and fun to talk to. Lovely dining facilities provide you choice to sit outside, on the indoor front porch or in large dining room. Wonderful, cozy bar located just inside the dining room. Best food around with innovative chef selections each night. Excellent breakfast buffet offered every morning with reasonable hours. Outstanding lakefront area with chaise lounges and plenty of lawn to relax, read or just look at the lake. Overall quality is head and shoulders above Shore Acres Inn, another popular North Hero hotel where we stayed while we were there.
Stayed at the Cove House which overlooks Lake Champlain; myself, my wife and two children (ages 4 and 2). The rooms weren't a great size but we spent much of our time outside. One extreme danger for kids is that the hotel is right on Route 2 of Vermont; a very busy street. Parking ain't that great either. Breakfast was very good. All in all, nice for a couple but not much room for kids. The jacuzzi was dirtier than a used rat trap. The supposed 'beach' is nothing more that a patch of sand. Not much room and pricey.
Convenient for boaters, the inn offers fine dining but mediocre, grossly overpriced accommodations (a 2 star facility charging 4 star prices). Drivers will find better value elsewhere.
My family stayed at the North Hero House for one night in August on our way to Montreal. We had one room facing the lake with a great screened in porch with a hammock and two chairs. Our kids had an adjoining room. It is an old-fashioned place and some of the paint and wallpaper could have used some freshening up. Breakfast is included and it was delicious, and served on a lovely porch overlooking the lake. They had an outdoor hot tub but it was broken. We tried to rent kayaks when we got there but it was too late in the day. The following morning, the nice woman at the front desk arranged for our kayaks with no charge because she thought we would be back soon due to threatening skies. My biggest complaint about our stay was the location. Yes, it is right on the lake, but it is also right next to a very busy main road that runs through the islands with many trucks rumbling by all night long. The setting could be so serene and lovely, but the busy road nearly spoiled it for me. There is another resort in North Hero that is set back from the road, and I would try that next time.
