We stayed at the Four Columns Inn in October 2008 for 2 nights on a 14 day leaf-peeping trip. We are active adults - hiking, biking, taking photographs, and I have to say this Inn was the most enjoyable one we stayed in of its' kind throughout New England.
We were referred by Karen Brown's books, and we were not disappointed. The room was immaculately clean (one of my most important standards), comfortable, charming but not fussy, and with all the comforts we would need. There was a nice sitting area and a desk, and our room also had a deck overlooking the back grounds. Granted, the internet does not work here if you have wireless, but after visiting with a friend nearby who laughed when we spoke of a lack of cellphone reception throughout the state - she replied that there isn't any anywhere nearby, either. This is not the fault of the Inn - it's a problem throughout the state. But - guess what? We lived without it! Not a big deal, just be aware.
The meals were big-city worthy; interesting, delicious, and of note - locally-farmed. The breakfasts were equally good, and although I am not one to eat much breakfast - my husband loved his. The grounds were beautiful - there is a swimming pool (not in use in chilly October), a pond, and a lovely creek running through the back meadow, punctuated with pairs of Adirondak chairs to sit and listen to the birds and feast on the countryside.
The den and living room were also spacious and comfortable, with cable tv in the den along with the bar, where we watched the Vice-presidential debate with several of the locals who owned summer homes nearby but had no tv reception. (They were delightful!) I would highly recommend Newfane as a base to explore the nearby towns of Grafton, Putney, and Brattleboro.
