“All the Beauty is on the Outside”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2011

We stayed at the Inn in September while in town to visit friends. We picked this Inn for the central location, proximity to our friend's home, and generally for a relative lack of other options in Montpelier. The photos online looked nothing like our room. We were put up in the main house, which is quaint on the outside and in severe need of updating on the inside. It was surprising that the Inn wasn't still using pink toilet paper. I'd hate to see what the inside of the second house looks like as the outside had peeling paint and sagging shutters. In our main house room, the bathroom was like that of a motel (plastic shower) and the small bedroom was poorly decorated with yellowing paint and rumpled bedspreads. The proprietors aren't very welcoming; we felt like we were intruding at every turn. After being barked at by the owner while wandering through the dining room in search of coffee our first morning there, we decided that it was best to spend as little time at the Inn as possible, forgoing the continental breakfast. The school portraits of their children dotting the Inn make it uncomfortable to be in common rooms as you feel like you are in the owner's private space. Like other reviewers mention, housekeeping and hospitality were both lacking. The combination of the two makes a laughingstock out of the "Housekeeping Tips" envelope prominently displayed in your room quite. The enjoyment did find at the Inn was central to the wrap around patio. To drink tea in the morning or to enjoy a bottle of farmer's market cheese and wine while enjoying a book in the afternoon, the deck is truly delightful. Unfortunately, the deck does not make up for the lack of service and style. While we will be back to visit our friends, we will look for other options for accommodations.

We have recently returned to the inn for a third time, and this time we decided to upgrade the the deluxe room with a romantic fireplace. Imagine our disappointment when we were informed that the fireplace was "not open for the season yet". That seem confusing, given our visit was timed at the height of foliage season.

Unfortunately, that was the least of my problems. Be warned that the spread/shams are not laundered between guests---and our bed dressings reflected the presence of other users. It is true that the bedding was removed from our room when we left a note---would I expect any less?

After the fireplace disappointment and the bedding gross-out, you can only imagine my delight in staying int the "deluxe" room.In general, there was a general layer of grime that was just yucky and disconcerting -- stained bedroom carpet, dirty bathroom woodwork, less-than-spotless toilet base, discarded tissues under the bed, crumbs/? in the jewelry dish on the mantle, more crumbles under the baseboard heater, and a crumpled/stained housekeeping envelope -- the whole effect -- when coupled with the "not open for the season" fireplace, tallied up to a hefty bill for 2 nights, and did little to conjure the image of a romantic weekend getaway.

It is a break-up of a sad sort --- always loved the inn, and returned thrice, but nevermore.

Upon checkin we were greeted by the owners who were very polite and couteious. YThe rooms were decorated in a very detailed coordinated manner. We also found the breakfast to be superb.

We spent 2 nights at this Inn and were very disappointed by the lack of attention to detail, especially considering the outlandish price. This seems to be one of those places that puts out for "ye olde" common areas and skimps on the guest rooms. Ours was small, drab and poorly lit with depressing furnishings and a not terribly comfortable bed. The ancient wall outlet next to the desk didn't work properly, with the result that my computer battery was drained overnight (and I shouldn't have bothered with it anyway since the internet connection was hit-or-miss). The bathroom was lit by 2 bulbs, one of which was burned out and not replaced throughout our stay, and the shower was weak. The lack of early morning coffee was also disappointing as was the breakfast, a quite limited selection of cold items (except for toast on request). Yet another irritant was that our room key took lots of jiggling and fussing to open the room door and the outer door to the property. All little things really, but they added up to a lack of care and concern for guests. We will not be back.

We had a terrible experience at this Inn. Upon arrival, we found dead bugs in clear view under a chair and gravel and crumbs on the rug. The hall and stairs were also dirty and in need of attention. They did vacuum our room at our request, but their efforts didn't result in an even marginally clean carpet. We had no Internet access and worked with the desk help for 40 minutes to no avail. When we addressed our concerns with the owner the next day (he was not on the premises the previous day), he insisted that no other guests had complained of same, suggesting that our claims were fabricated. As for the dirty room, his self righteous comment was that it was vacuumed after our complaints, His attitude, throughout, was confrontational, cocky and rude. When we asked for some adjustment to be made to our bill, he replied, "If you couldn't afford it, you shouldn't have stayed." We can afford it, but we won't ever be staying again.

In our weary travels home late at night we could not find any accomodations when we fell upon the Inn at Montpelier. We are glad we stayed overnight. The Inn is clean and the breakfast was delicious as well as having a comfortable atmosphere. I would recommend the Inn at Montpelier anytime.

I stayed at the Inn on two separate trips to Montpelier in January 2011. The owners are as delightful as they are accommodating. The rooms at this property are divided between the main inn and the adjacent builiding. I stayed in a room in each. The main inn has better amenities, so you should try to book a room there if you can.
