“Betsy's needs an update”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2005

Betsy's B and B needs a face lift. The place is clean but the comforters on the bed make you second guess yourself. She needs to update the carpet as well. It is a little run down and the breakfasts are nothing special. She runs out of certain things as well so get to breakfast early. With new linens and a few other things done to the place it would nice and quaint.

A week before we were due to arrive at Betsy's B and B, I happened to read a trip review that was recently written about the Inn. We were a bit skeptical...but must say we were most pleasantly surprised. Yes the house could use some fixing, but what home standing since the 1800's doesn't?
The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, breakfast was enjoyable with various options, served on beautiful china. We were most comfortable and would not hesitate to return. I would strongly recommend it to anyone traveling to Vermont, as we did, for a Norwich University graduation.
Thank you, Betsy, Jon and your great staff

Betsy's B&B consists of rooms in her family's home (with cat) and rooms in an adjacent house (cat not allowed). There is an online site; it shows the rooms; booking is straightforward; Betsy is helpful in booking and honest in billing. The whole place is nonsmoking. That's the good part.

We arrived late on a beautiful, dry spring day. Our room was ready--in fact, we had the whole adjacent house to ourselves, living room and kitchen included. Had the whole place been full it would have been claustrophobic and not very private. The bed was average. Drapes and blinds took a lot of fiddling to give us privacy; there was minimal light blocking, so the sun got us up long before we wanted. Heating grilles in the floor had one-inch openings capable of swallowing much larger things than a ring. We fortunately noticed them and took care.

A lot of cleaning and fixing remains undone. The first thing that greeted us as we entered was a giant ashtray on the porch. It was filled with cigarette butts. Next was the latch on the front door. It had broken, so the hasp had been removed. The bathroom was dirty in a lot of places, even in the shower. There were two of us; when we asked for a second face towel--the norm everyplace I've been--it was given with the comment that our request was unusual. There was a service door in the bathroom that would not close; it emitted bug-spray odors continuously. A cabinet in the room had a broken support arm with a cute note attached. Other things did not work. We did not need the heat (it was off anyway) nor the small room air conditioner, so I cannot comment on those.

The shower was the worst in memory. You would think that in a house with 8 rooms for rent, that with only us, we would have had plenty of hot water. Not so! The water in the sink took over five minutes to get hot--I'm an engineer, I timed it--and the shower barely sprayed water at all.

We have been in B&Bs before where the rooms have quirks but the breakfast is a culinary masterpiece. Not here. There was a little glass of juice, unfresh coffee in a holding pitcher, a few open boxes of cold cereal (mine was stale), off-flavor milk for the cereal, one toy-size muffin apiece, and a smallish portion of scrambled eggs.

The bill was $109. Go elsewhere and get more for your money.

Skip a stay at Betsy's Bed and Breakfast.....
This was one situation where cleanliness of the home area shared by the guests was less than satisfactory. In fact I found much of it just DIRTY and MESSY!
Old bedding that seemed long past needing replaced.
In addition, while the advertising make it sound like it is an easy walk to downtown.... I would not recommend it for those with health issues, as it is located up a steep hill from the Montpelier downtown.
One positive, the breakfasts and the cooks were very nice and inviting and sharing the meal with other guests became an interesting event each day.
