“a stay in the Mansfield Room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

The owners and staff of this inn are friendly and the grounds are spacious. It is a short walk to the village. Each room will have its own personality. The Mansfield Room could be lovely for a couple. This room has a private patio with cast iron furniture and a spacious Jacuzzi. The room is advertised as accommodating 4. We were traveling with our daughters ages 20 and 24. The pullout was pretty uncomfortable and with it made up, the room was pretty cramped. The Mansfield Room is in the walk-out basement of the building and a sauna and steam room with extra shower were just down the hall. As was a separate lavatory. Overall, the place needs a bit more attention. Black finger marks on the bathroom door, the bathroom fixtures are looking old, the furniture is a bit shabby, the plantings need a lot of attention, etc. All of this could be easily overlooked, if we weren't paying as much for this room as we would for a very decent hotel room in Midtown Manhattan. The bottom line is this is not a good value for the money. If I needed to return to Middlebury, I would try the Middlebury Inn.

The restaurant in the Inn is quite good.

Also, I had emailed asking if we could bring our dog. The reply was yes we could. It would be $50 extra per day and what was his name? When we arrived we were told the dog could never be unattended in the room. This is an understandable policy as not all owners are as conscientious as we are about not allowing their dog to bark incessantly. However, it would have been nice to have been told about this policy in the reply email. I am sure it is posted on their site somewhere. I'm mentioning it here just to call it to the attention of potential guests.

Room Tip: Read descriptions really carefully and maybe call the Inn for more info.

This past year we have been rehabing the Carriage House baths and have completed 3 of the 6 , with another scheduled this month. The sleeper sofas in 4 of the 6 rooms were replaced last summer with American Leather ,extremely comfortable sleeper sofas. Unfortunately the Mansfield Room has yet to have either upgrade, however the room is still in excellent condition. We have walked through the room and reviewed cleaning procedures with the House Keepers. For the comfort and safety of all our guests; we have explicit requests of the dog owners in caring for their dogs while staying with us. These requests are e mailed prior to the visit, however in this case it was not sent and should have been. The Mansfield Room has 400 square feet of space and a very large bath, however with the sleeper sofa opened with four adults and a large dog, even a room of this size space is limited. The climate in Vermont makes May the optimum time of garden awakening and plantings, during this guests weekend we planted over 75 perennials and woody plants in order to enhance our already beautiful gardens. The spring garden work is complete and the gardens look fabulous! We continue to learn what is important from our guests and appreciate any feedback both in order to enhance our guests experience and improve our physical property.

I had a wonderful time at the Swift House Inn. It's on a corner very conveniently located to the main part of Middlebury, but situated on a lovely lot with lots of green (and probably lots of color in the fall) so that you get a country-ish feeling. They provide a weekly list of special activities in the area, such as concerts and performances. The Swift Room is beautiful and well-maintained with a large bathroom and, a special extra touch, a nice-sized balcony (with table and two chairs) off of the bathroom. The room was quiet and the bed very comfortable. The main floor areas are also lovely, including the spacious dining room with views of the outside. The dining room was very busy at breakfast but Michele took the time to warmly welcome and chat with each guest. I overheard her being very accommodating to the various food preferences and restrictions that guests were asking for. The breakfast was excellent! If I had a child at Middlebury College or any other reason to visit regularly I would make this my go-to lodging in the area.

The room was very nice but needed a little tender loving care . It was very clean, but a previous guest had scorched the rug with an iron.
The sitting area's ceiling needs to be painted. The In was superb with welcoming people and a good restaurant for the evening meal. It felt like a home away from home.
They offered a nice breakfast.

Excellent stay at Swift House Inn. Very unique and welcoming inn, with fresh coffee and cookies everyday. Gorgeous rooms, no matter what building you stay in. Comfy beds and very clean! Really want you to feel welcome and explore every nook and cranny of the local areas. (A must is the watering hole as they call it about a 15 min drive away, unbelievable!) The food was delicious, especially the french toast for breakfast. Beautiful grounds and very relaxing. Take me back immediately! :)

From Asa when we arrived, to Tom and Daniella at dinner, to Susie at breakfast, our stay was a delight. The innkeepers were away, but we know that staff are a good indication of their quality. Comfy room with a fire, wonderful dinner, sense of calm and beauty on arrival. Thank you.

As owners, Michele and I were at our Annual Innkeepers Conference as we have done for the past 17 years. It's important to learn, improve and keep up with the changes in the industry. We have a wonderful team at the Swift House Inn and Jessica's Restaurant and have complete confidence that the guest experience will be consistent . It is great to receive a validation of that experience. Thank you!

From the fresh baked cookies, fruit, coffee and tea at your fingertips, the Swift House Inn really has your best interest at heart. We have stayed there 4 times now (we have a daughter at Middlebury College). The breakfast is pure Vermont charm and they are very good about accomodating any eating preferences (my husband is gluten-intolerant). The owners, Dan and Michelle, are extremely welcoming and caring. On our last visit, we had to leave at midnight to out run hurricane Sandy and fly out of Chicago instead of Boston. Michelle folllowed up with an email, asking us about our adventure. Each room is decorated wih antiques and each one has its own personality and charm. We have had dinner at their restuarant and were very happy with the food and service. If you stay accross the street in the Gate House, be aware that the rooms on the front side have road noise. Overall, the Swift House Inn is pure New England charm and hospitality.

Room Tip: I would call and ask the Inn Keeper about your ownpersonal preferences, since the rooms are all diff...

We stayed in the lovely old gate house with rich accommodations and antique furniture. Wifi was spotty. We were happy to have a window a/c unit but it was loud, and the automatic shut off meant it woke you up when it kicked back on. We really enjoyed our visit… it felt like we were staying with a wealthy old relative.
