“Romantic Spa Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2007

We stayed at the Equinox, booking directly through the hotel's Cloud 999 package. A great value for being able to splurge & get spa services. I will admit the building could use some updating but that's part of its charm. Its a 1600s hotel in New England!! The spa was all completely brand new and we enjoyed several massages and facials, etc. Highly reccomend a spa scrub/wrap and spa shower!! The pool was enjoyable to hang out by while there was a blizzard going on outside. The staff was very accomodating & always pleasant. 5 star dinner menu was a treat for Valentine's Day. Definitely could not have stayed anywhere else with the type of package we received!!

The Equinox Resort and Spa is proud to announce, as we complete our fifth year as a RockResort and member of Leading Hotels of the World that AAA has awarded us their highly coveted 2007 Four Diamond Award. Considering that only 3% of America’s hotels, motels, lodges and inns are AAA Four Diamond or better, we respect what Four Diamonds means to our guests and staff.

Our fourteenth consecutive AAA Four Diamond win is a result of our consistent, total commitment to ensuring that all of our guests walk away with a positive, memorable experience and fondly remember our Resort as a reflection of charming New England hospitality. Our entire staff is dedicated to ensuring a true, genuine, unscripted service experience to match our warm, cozy New England resort.

We are very thankful for all of our guests’ feedback on TripAdvisor. Your comments have allowed us the opportunity to go back to our managers and staff to share your compliments and thoughts on what may have needed improvement. Our reputation and success depend on it.

In building our Resort’s AAA Four Diamond reputation one guest at a time, we are not only thankful, but most appreciative of our guests who have taken the time to ask for me or one of my managers while still here at the Resort to help solve anything possibly related to a less than positive experience. We value our guests’ perception of their experiences with us.

For those guests’ who did not have a memorable experience and did not seek to speak to me, I only wish that we could have had the opportunity to turn your resort experience into a positive one while you were still here. Our service commitment to provide a positive, memorable experience relies on our guests’ letting us know if we are ever being less than memorable for any reason while still residing at the Resort. This is truly guest service at its best. We recognize the value of your time away from home and simply want all of our guests to have the stay they deserve. Our goal is to have you write only about how great your experience was with us. The livelihoods of our 200+ employees depend on it.

Thank you to all of our TripAdvisor guests who have taken the time to write about your resort experiences. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Equinox Resort and Spa. If you are looking to stay with us for the first time, thank you in advance for the opportunity to be your host in Manchester Village, Vermont.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me personally at 802/362-7891 direct or at gthulander@equinoxresort.com for any assistance with your future reservation needs. Our four-season resort is in the middle of our ski season, however, if summer is your preference, we look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful New England summer playground.

Warm regards,

Gary S. Thulander

We stayed at the Equinox for an excellent ski/spa weekend and could not have been happier. Our room was charming with a great view of Mt. Equinox (be sure to ask for a room on a high floor and away from the bar area which can get a little loud on Friday and Saturday nights with live music). Housekeeping was outstanding - the room was spotless. Room service is ok, but you're better off enjoying the cafes and restaurants in Manchester. What really makes the hotel top notch are the common areas and services. Definitely spend some time in the library next to the gigantic fireplace. The spa is not to be missed - you can book services (expect Bliss-like prices), or just enjoy the indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, and exercise room. If you're heading to Stratton or Bromley, the hotel has a shuttle to bring you to the mountain and back. The staff was beyond helpful - you will feel like royalty from the time you pull up to when your car and luggage is ready to go at checkout. Also highly recommend dinner at the Reluctant Panther down the street!

My husband, 8-year-old daughter and I stayed at the Equinox resort and spa Jan. 1 - 4, 2007. I'm not sure why all the negative reviews, but I can only tell you our stay was nearly flawless! First of all, we got an awesome mid-week deal through travelzoo - $79 per night - plus $20 "resort fee'' and taxes, so overall just over $100 a night. The kicker is, the hotel upgraded us to a "superior room'' which is a bit larger than the "classic room'' which would have been fine anyway. The price got us there - but I definitely feel it was worth far more. The service, cleanliness - and most of all quietness - of the property was outstanding. We enjoyed eating in the Marsh Tavern. Just one or two tiny drawbacks -- a little confusion over how much to charge at breakfast - one day I was able to get a dicounted continental buffet, the next day not. And a strange waiter got a little freaky when we questioned it, as well as the price charged for the child's buffet. Fortunately, the manager straightened everything out straight away, without further drama.
Also, very helpful concierge told me my massage was at 1 - but it really was booked for 12. Fortunately, I learned the right time beforehand. I also wish the gym had more cardio equipment to satisfy a gym rat like me. The indoor pool, however, was fabulous! A tip - if you're like me, and come for the spa, book your services in advance. Although the resort was not full, the spa was completely booked the first day, but I managed to get a massage on the second day. It was, quite possibly, the best massage I've ever had! So relaxing. And there is a room with tea, water, apples and a fireplace where you can lounge afterward. I want more!
I'm a frequent traveler, and I would without hesitation rate our stay at Equinox very close to a 10 out of 10. (nobody's perfect, but they try) We go to ski resorts a lot, and reasonable places are usually just a little nasty - and a lot less luxurious. We already have scheduled a return trip!

  • Liked — Lovely room - upgraded without asking. Beautiful public areas. Nice pool, spa.
  • Disliked — No kids in spa area - but may be a blessing with some famillies!
  • Tips/Secrets — Book your massages in advance!

With some upgrades to the physical plant, the Equinox could be a truly fine resort. It is set in a cute ski village about 4 hours north of NYC. The town has much to recommend it--from good outlet shopping to good restaurants, Manchester is a nice place to visit for a long weekend.

The rooms at the resort are its weakest point. We saw three different rooms (from the lowest category to a large suite) and can say that they vary widely in terms of space, though in terms of amenities, there is no real difference. The very traditional decor looks like it has not been updated in several years. The bathroom was inexcusably dated--no separate tub/shower, weak water pressure, etc.

The service was pretty good, with most everyone being accommodating and friendly. The bellboy system could stand for greater precision. We left our bags to be stored on arrival, as our room was not yet ready, and later wandered down to the front desk to find our bags lying in the lobby. This is inexcusable.

The gym/spa area is nice, though certainly not great. The workout facilities were average at best (pretty small room with limited number of machines) and the locker rooms were relatively nice, though cramped and a little unclean. On a positive note, the indoor pool area looked beautiful, though we did not have a chance to use it.

We attended an event at the resort and can say that the Equinox did a wonderful job running the event--the service was impeccable and the food was quite good as well.

For the rates the resort charges, the rooms should be more luxurious. As it stands now, the rooms are not much nicer than any standard nicer-than-average airport hotel. Though the building itself has a lot of history and character, and is quite aesthetically pleasing to boot, the Equinox needs to modernize its accommodations to truly become a destination resort.

  • Liked — The town of Manchester; the aesthetic of the resort
  • Disliked — The dated rooms; the absent-minded bellhop service

To summarise a dismal week; the 3 rooms were dirty, dated, poorly maintained and poorly furnished; the beds were incapable of providing a good nights sleep; housekeeping was sporadic and ineffective and the staff were unable to make a bed; the concierge service portrayed both in-house restaurants as full, forcing us to eat outside on several evenings when in fact they were half empty; some of the restaurant and bar staff were rude and abrupt; service, especially preparing tables at breakfast, was slow. All in all, the staff gave the impression that guests were a nuisance, and an interruption to their day.

Even after a 25% discount for what the Front Desk Manager wrote was the unacceptable condition of the Town House, the bill for the week was $7,600.

We wish the hotel had been honest about the condition of the room when we booked. We also wished we had seen in advance the numerous poor customer reviews about the Equinox on tripadvisor. It is interesting that the theme of many of these is similar to our experience: over flattering brochure/website descriptions, poor service, rude staff, and inadequate rooms. It is also clear that the Town Houses are acknowledged by customers and the hotel management as sub-standard, yet reservations continue to be taken for these. We encourage others not to make the same mistake that we did.

This should not be a Leading Hotel of the World, and we will never go back again.

  • Liked — Coming home.
  • Disliked — Too many to list separately.
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay away from the Equinox (and other Rock Resort hotels if they are all like this).

We stayed over X-mas weekend. Hotel is attractive and well-maintained, and most of the staff -- especially the younger ones -- were pleasant. Pool area was also quite nice. But, the rooms were noisy, sparsely furnished (e.g., our room had one easy chair for two people, no closet and only a small armoire), and very plain.

The biggest problem was dining -- the food was mediocre and expensive; the staff was mostly brusque; the service slow; and lunch was unattainable without reservations -- which we were told would not be needed. The town was mostly factory outlets -- good for bargains but not much in the way of charm. The high point was a long, self-guided hike in the conservation area adjacent to the hotel. Perfect for 50 - somethings. We and our friends all felt the place was way over-priced and none of us plans to return.

I love, love, loved the 1811 House!

We booked a room there at the last minute, literally, by making a phone call as we drove through Manchester looking for a place to stay. What a gem!

We walked into the main house and was greeted by the inn owners' daughter, who is one of the innkeepers. We had asked for the least expensive room since we go there at 8:00 pm and were planning to leave first thing in the morning. She told us that since she was having a private family party in the main house, she would comp us the upgrade to another room in the cottage.

She then showed us around the pub, and explained that we could help ourselves to drinks and pay on the honor system. How fun is that?

Then she took us to our room. All I can say is WOW. It was beautifully decorated with antique furniture and knick knacks. We had a four poster bed with lovely linens, and there was a comfortable seating area stocked with lots of current magazines.

The bathroom was nice too - not luxurious but very nice and spotlessly clean. The towels were fabulous - so soft. And there was a basket stocked with nice toiletries too.

Breakfast was great. We had bananas baked in butter and sugar and sprinkled with cinnamon. Really delicious. Then we were served an omelet with our choice of ingredients. That was delicious too. And of course we had toast, which was served with homemade preserves. Unlike the previous reviewers I thought the portions were generous, and the hosts were so accommodating I am sure they would have served more if we had asked.

It was at that time we explored the rest of the main house a bit. Very nice sitting rooms that were warm and inviting.

All in all, I loved the 1811 and wished we had been able to stay for longer.

  • Liked — Extremely friendly staff and beautiful room.
  • Disliked — The town doesn't offer much in the way of activities unless you're into outlet shopping.
