“Loved our stay at the Windekind Farm - so much to do, so little time”

Windekind Farm

Jan 7, 2008

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at the Windekind Farm. The farm is nestled in a quiet, gorgeous valley with views of mountains close-by and in the distance. There are hiking and well groomed x-country skiing trails right outside your doorstep. We skied for hours and only met 4 other people. You can see the Adirondacks and other 360 degree views along the trails. There are restaurants within 10-20 minutes of the Farm that meet all tastes and have very kind of atmosphere - romantic, fun, lively, quiet. There are 6 skiing areas from 15 - 40 minutes away and bustling Burlington 35 minutes away. You can't go wrong.

The accommodation ranges from bedrooms in a wonderfully restored, old farmhouse to a new apartment to a 2 story brand new cottage with great views. The apartment is cosy with a huge kitchen - the best equipped one I have ever seen -, an inviting living room with a wood burning stove if you choose to use it, lots of books, a terrace. TV, a sound system and wireless are there as well - but we chose to stay blissfully ignorant of the outside world. We had a hard time deciding between the activities outside in the winder wonderland and the cosy cottage. We read, ate, watched the fire, admired the views. Everything was warm, clean, a wonderful bed with comforter, colorful materials and all wooden interior.

The owners are generous, very knowledgeable about the area and willing to share tips and advise. They have been living there and creating a wonderful landscape right next to the Green Mountain State Forest for decades.

My wife and I lived in Vermont many years ago and have been returning regularly for the past 30 years. We were thrilled to find Windekind Farm and have stayed there every year since 2002. We have enjoyed the farm so much that we return regularly twice a year. Windekind has become much more than a vacation spot, it is our home away from home. The farm consists of a refurbrished farm house and two accommodations built by Mark Smith. We started out staying in the Studio and then the larger Breidablick when it became available. The farm is in a beautiful location in the middle of the Green Mountains. It, and it's proprietors, are quintessential Vermont. The grounds are serene and well kept with a brook transversing it and a duck pond to sit by and watch the ducks (when they are there) engage in duck behavior. The farm is a very peaceful location to recharge one's batteries. The Smith's have been on the farm for over 40 years. All the buildings reflect Marijke's dutch heritage and Mark's talents as a crafts person. We are very grateful to have found Windekind and the Smiths.

My husband, two dogs and I recently stayed for a long weekend at Windekind Farm. Our stay was nothing but wonderful. We stayed in the Studio which is a 600 sq ft space fully equipped with a claw foot tub, kitchen, living room and bedroom. You cannot beat the view from the bedroom when the sun rises in the morning over the mountains. Mr and Mrs Smith, the owners of the property, are two very lovely people that were extremely helpful during our stay. Mr. Smith will answer any questions about the surrounding area and has plenty of suggestions for helping us to find things to do. We explored many small towns surrounding the area. Everything is within a comfortable driving distance: we hit the hot spots on the northern part of Route 100 in one day.

If you are looking for luxury hotel like accomadations, this is not the place for you. If you are wanting to fit into a relaxing farm where you blend with your surroundings, you have come to the right place. Everything was perfectly clean and we found the Studio very comfortable and relaxing.

I hope you can enjoy Windekind Farm soon! We have already booked a return visit!!

We stayed in the Studio at Windekind Farms in early October. The studio is located above the garage where the tractor is kept. The picture they show online of the studio is slightly misleading because it appears to be the entire building but is really the top half of the structure.
The studio offers the basics needed for a comfortable stay: full size kitchen with almost everything you would need to cook (no microwave or non-stick frying pan which made pancakes out of the question), kitchen table, small living room with a dvd player and a small flat screen tv, full bathroom with a real claw foot tub and a bedroom with a queen size bed.
I'm a worse-case scenario traveler so we brought our own sheets which I'm actually glad we did. When I inspected the sheets I noticed there was a questionable stain/mark on the sheets that they had supplied. Luckily, we had our own to swap out so no big deal in the end.
The property owner, Mark, supplied a map of Vermont, a map of nearby places to buy food and visit and a map of nearby hiking trails that are actually on their property. The one thing that did get annoying with the owners was that their house sits across from the studio so they know when you are coming and going. We would come back from a day of exploring or hiking and within 10 minutes he would be on the phone or knocking at the door to see how the day was. Personally, I'm on vacation and I want to be left alone but other people may enjoy having the interaction. Mark also liked to come into the studio and just sit down. I know he owns the place but there has to be some boundaries and respect.
There were three major problems with the whole experience. The first was that the owners failed to inform us or find it a problem that the studio was infested with flies . The flies came into the studio through ever nook and cranny during the day. We ended up going through an entire can of Raid and having to vacuum up all of the dead flies. The second problem was mice. The mice came out at night through the stove and proceeded to get into the food. Had to buy mouse traps and ended up catching two of them. The flies and mice didn't really seem to bother the owner. His response was that it happens in the fall. The third problem was that the owners actually double booked us on our last night and asked us to leave because it would be easier for them. At that point I had had it with the whole experience so I was more than happy to leave. He did feel bad and offered to waive the deposit on our next stay but we won't be returning.

Each fall we enjoy the magic of fall foliage. We don't enjoy, however, the attempts by flies and mice to seek winter shelter in our buildings. Unfortunatly, this guest visited the "Studio" on the days when day time tempature conspired to make the impact of flies and mice the most intense. We take these infestation problems very seriously and will continue to take actions to counter the problem.
