Received a warm welcome, nice grounds, hallways could use a little paint, but the room was nice. The Inn greeted my little dog with doggie treats. Room service was fast and professional. Staff was consistently great. I left something behind in the room, they found it and UPSed it to me!!!

The Inn at Essex was enchanting! My husband and I took our two small dogs on vacation with us, and we had plenty of room for water and food dishes, puppy pads, and all the other assorted paraphenalia that traveling with dogs demands. The staff was gracious and most helpful, and made excellent recommendations for our various requests (hair salon, quaint places to go, tourist attractions, non-tourist attractions, eateries, etc.).

We loved it, and we're going back in a few months!

I stayed at the Inn at Essex in August 2006. The Inn itself was pleasantly simple. The grounds were kept very nicely, and the pool area was a very relaxing area. Plenty of lounge chairs as well as poolside tables and chairs. The service at the hotel was great! I accidently left a few items (Coach wristlet and Tiffany necklace) in the hotel room after checking out. I called after I arrived home on the off-chance that the housekeeping staff turned it in, and they did! They even sent me the items free of charge. I didn't expect to ever see those items again because of my own carelessness, but I not only got them back but they didn't even charge me for shipping. In the end, the great service after the fact made for an an excellent experience overall!

We were looking for a place halfway between home and Montreal for our annual anniversary trip and found it to be the Inn at Essex. We got a scoop on a Travel Zoo special at the Inn and booked our two night stay directly with the Inn's website. We received two breakfasts and a $25 certificate toward our dinner at Butler's. We were pleased with the special package we got ...

At check in we were greeted by friendly faces behind the counter. They were smiling even though the Inn's computer system had been down for the day. They were manually entering check ins / check outs, and this meant the housekeeping staff didn't have the computers to rely on. But operations didn't appear to be faultering and our check in was quick and our room was ready...

The room we were in (#217) was directly above the lobby. It was appointed nicely and had an electric fireplace which would be really nice during the winter months...

The Inn at Essex is home to the New England Culinary Institute and the students run the two restaurants there. Butler's fine dining suited us perfectly for our anniversary dinner. The dinner and breakfasts we had there were excellent, as was the service.

The Inn at Essex is close to many area attractions and an easy drive to Canada... We enjoyed the Inn very much; the location was perfect for spending time in Burlington, exploring the Grand Isle area of Lake Champlain and visiting Montreal before heading south to our next overnight Inn in Manchester Village.

  • Liked — Comfy bed! (I liked the vivid green painted walls too!)
  • Disliked — Lack of Internet access -- Our laptop couldn't connect to their router. Probably due to their computer issues... no one could confirm though...
  • Tips/Secrets — Butler's restaurant is PRICEY but the food is AMAZING!

We attended a wedding at the Inn. Everything from the service to the cleanliness of the rooms to the food was very disappointing. Worst of all was the bad attitude that the staff had. A little customer service goes a long way.

After reading some of the reviews here before booking at the Inn at Essex, I almost didn't want to go. That would have been a mistake! I have traveled through perhaps 100 inns throughout New England and have not found a better value anywhere. The rooms were very nicely decorated, spacious, and very clean. The staff was most accommodating. My friend and I did the "Chef in Training" workshop, and learned many new techniques. Chef Contos is clearly an expert in her field. I could go on and on about the food... what an amazing culinary treat! I love salad, and the greens they served tasted like they were fresh picked that day. (I was told that they were.) The tavern was a great place to relax with lighter, less expensive fare and even chat with some of the cooking students. (They are the staff at the onsite restuarants.) We did not have dinner at Butler's, but we did have breakfast there and it was excellent. We were confused about the continental breakfast, expecting a standard muffin-and-cereal buffet, but it turns out that it is an ordering option on the menu that you are given. We spent several hours in the pool, and found it to be clean and quiet, devoid of noisy groups and favoring people that just want to sit with a book or relax in the pool. The inn seems to attract a respectful clientele. After eating such delicious food, we enjoyed walking over to the outlet shops. We also spent some times visiting area attractions such as touring the Ben and Jerry's factory and the Lake Champlain chocolate factory. (As you can see, this was a FOOD oriented visit!) Even though the food was a focus, we don't feel like we blew any dietary goals; they're focus is on executing a flavorful, fresh dish and not on serving you gigantic portions. Portions were just right, especially since you are travelling and not likely to save leftovers. My advice to anyone using trip advisor is to take it with a grain of salt; people who have legitimate complaintes would be better off speaking to someone who can actually do something about it rather than nit-picking them. We loved the Inn at Essex and plan to return in the future.

The Inn at Essex's website bolsters a wonderful Inn experience, which is quite the contrary. This Inn is totally overpriced. Our stay was terrible. We got the Vermont get away package and stayed two nights. The room had a torn up blanket, the air conditioning didn't work, and there was no continental breakfast that was suppose to come with our package. This Inn definately needs to be updated. We stayed here at the end of a week vacation in New England. All of the other hotels we stayed at were cheaper and nicer. There was no attention to detail and the staff was not educated enough to answer any questions. Vermont was beautiful and I'm sure there are many nicer places to stay.
