Description: At Das Bierhaus you will find authentic German, Austrian and Swiss family recipes made with local, organic ingredients and served alongside the world's best beers! Prost! A note on our food:We have searched far and wide to bring you these traditionally inspired meals. Our dishes are homemade, using locally-sourced and produced ingredients wherever possible. They are based on authentic German, Austrian and Swiss family recipes and served with a twist of Vermont. We are dedicated to continuing old-world culinary traditions. As such, we support local farms and operate with no microwave and very limited freezer space — everything is fresh. Nothing is pre-packaged. Our food is prepared from scratch, and cooked with love.Das Bierhaus is a Chef-Owned Establishment. A note on our beer: We dedicate 100% of our draft lines to German biers. Our selection varies based on availability and seasonal variety. We constantly source new, limited, and/or up-and-coming biers from home and abroad, so there should always be something new to taste. Finally, we regularly pursue new German acquisitions and navigate the state’s regulatory system to bring them to you on tap.

“Fresh ingredients prepared from scratch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I was very pleased with all 3 factors of dining out: first, the beverage selection is extensive, especially their import biers. Second, the food was authentic. The Jäger “Hunter” Schnitzel was fresh and delightful (good portion, too). Red cabbage as a side is always a favorite. Finally, service was excellent. They made me feel right at home. Interestingly, the chef owner is not German but he has conjured up the right decor and atmosphere to compliment a type of food he loves (and I wish were better represented among all the popular restaurants in the world).

There is dining and bars on both first and second floors, and in good weather they open up a roof top beir garden. The first floor is notably quieter than the second but the food and service are the same. I plan on returning to sample more of their menu and try some new beers.

“BEYOND Wunderbar!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

My husband and I have a "thing" about German restaurants during our Anniversary Week. It sort of created itself, when we realized how many German restaurants we'd visited on how many anniversary trips. So, as we ambled along Church Street in Burlington, we spotted Das Bierhaus, looked at each other and decided "tradition holds!"

It's a not very prepossessing place -- a small downstairs and a larger (and noisier) upstairs. There is a roof garden, too. but as this was mid-October we missed the season. We didn't mind. Kari, our waitress, was in the downstairs area and that's where we opted for dinner.

This place has had good and not-so-good reviews, but take it from a couple of Deutschers -- this place ROCKS. Bluntly, it was crazy-good first to last.

We started with two excellent beers -- both dark, one a bit more hoppy than the other. Kari was a terrific help in choosing both the beers and what came after.

Be warned: portions are NOT small. Ever. We oped for some tastings and it was more than enough. We started with a cheese-covered pretzel with some very good grainy mustard. We followed with some superb Knackwuerst. There was not a speck of gristle; it was pate-smooth, with a very find mix of (I think) pork and veal, and mild spicing. It came on a bed of red cabbage which was pleasant and not mushy (a fault with a lot of German restaurants). I would have kicked up the vinegar and clove a notch, but it was still quite edible and we polished it off. We accompanied the Wuerst with a plate of green beans dressed and sauteed with finely minced garlic and red onion, about which my husband was over the moon...I now have the recipe and will be making it at home!

Finally, we ordered the apple fritters. We were stunned when the plate arrived. These are not little fritters, these are three tennis-ball sized mounds of cake fried in sugar and a scoop of REAL vanilla ice cream. I am embarrassed to say we finished it, while telling each other we shouldn't, really we shouldn't...

We left overfull, deeply satisfied, and purely delighted with the food (kudos to chef/owner Nick!), the service (Kari is sweet, superb, and flawless), and the experience. If you're in Burlington and have a desire for real German food, run do not walk to this gem!

“So, so good.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

We had an absolutely delicious meal here---some of the best German food I've ever had.
I highly recommend the warm potato salad, the pretzle appetizer platter, and the weiner schnitzel. It was too chilly to sit roof top when we were there, but the inside it quaint and comfortable, service was good, beer was great, prices were fair. Definitely make a stop in.

“Great Rainy Evening meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

What a delightful surprise. We arrived before the first floor dining room opened and were seated in the second floor tap room as the roof top deck was closed due to rain. Initially we were a little concerned that we were in a seious drinking place wanting just an early evening meal. Our fears were soon quelled as the young crowd was well behaved and soon wandered off. The service was excellent with a very pleasant waitress who was very attentive to our needs. The swiss trained chef prepared the best schnitzel I have had since leaving Germany, bar none. A very traditional meal in an authentic looking venue. Worth the extra block down Church Street. We will be back.

“Walk the extra block to Das Bierhaus!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012 via mobile

We were in Burlington for the first time at an event at UVM. Someone recommended Das Bierhaus and another popular restaurant. There was a 45 minute wait at the other. Das Bierhaus is only a block away from where most of the other eateries are. It was worth the trip! We sat outside on a gorgeous night. The also have indoor and roof top dining. EVERYTHING was made authentically and fresh from scratch. We particularly enjoyed the pretzel sampler and the HUGE selection of draft and bottled beer! Don't miss this place!
