“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

We spent a couple of nights in this wonderful ski resort. Although it was cold, the first snow had not come yet. In fact, we intended to see the folliage, the New England fenomenon of Fall, when the trees display all shades of colors, but we were one week late. In mid-fall it must be wonderful. The resort is extremely comfortable. We were with a bunch of family, so the room we took was actually very large, with four bedrooms, a living, kitchen, and lots of closets and bathrooms. For winter-sport lovers it must be great after snow falls.

Room Tip: I suppose there is a great variety of rooms, since the resort has three or four different buildings...

Not a lot to do, very few activities. But a GREAT gym and beautiful views and nice walking trails Stay away from the restaurant. It is mediocre at best and there are many great restaurants within a 20 minute drive.
Be careful of restaurant hours in the area as some close on Sundays/Mondays off season.

Room Tip: Full suite has all kitchen amenities.

If you are looking for a quiet place to stay in the mountains of Vermont, the Ascutney Mountain Resort should fit the bill. However, if you are looking for a resort with a lot of activities and nightlife going on, you might want to look at other options.

This resort is a large mix of old buildings spreadout at the base of Mt. Ascutney. It has all been updated and renovated, and is now part of the Holiday Inn Club Vacations timeshare group.

There are rooms in the large main building where the front desk and restaurant are located, and in several seperate buildings.

My wife and I stayed in a two bedroom unit in the main building. Our unit was very clean and the kitchen had all new stainless steel appliances, and plenty of everything a kitchen would need. Both bedrooms as well as the living room had TV's. The master bedroom was large and had a king bed and a sloped ceiling with a skylight, and it's own bathroom. The second bedroom had 2 double beds and was a bit small and crowded. The living room / dinning room was quite large. The 2 bathrooms were small but clean.

A few months later I returned to this resort with some friends for a weekend get-a-way and we stayed in a 3 bedroom unit. This was a 2 story "loft" unit. and was very spacious with plenty of room and beds for each of us. Once again the unit and the bathrooms were very clean.

On the downside, I should mention is that the rooms are not very soundproof, and the floors in ours were a bit creeky, especially if you have someone in a unit above yours. Also, if you need ice, the only ice machine is located at the main building in the basement. So... especially if you are not staying in the main building, getting ice can be a real pain. Take a contaner with you if you go for ice because all they have is some small plastic bags to transport the ice in.

In a seperate building, there is a great fitness area with lots of machines, treadmills, weights, etc. There is also a heated olympic size indoor pool in this building. Outside there is a seasonal outdoor pool and tennis courts.

In the main building there is a small convience store and the restuarant / lounge, which has limited hours. In the morning there was a buffet style breakfast set up in the lobby area. This is not free and we did not use it, but it looked to have a limited selection of food. There is a small "movie theater" where they show family movies in the evening. Also in this building there is an arcade room with a ping-pong table, and another room with a couple of pool tables.

The resort is at the base of Mt. Ascutney, which used to be a ski area but it no longer operates and has been closed for a couple of years. There are hiking & biking trails.

There is really not any shopping or restaurants close by, but there are some within a 15 - 20 minute drive. The staff is great at recommending places to eat and things to to and see. (The Quechee Gorge is a must see!).

If a quiet resort nestled at the base of a mountain in Vermont sounds like your idea of a relaxing vacation, this is probably a good bet for you.

If you are considering booking a suite at Ascutney Mountain Resort, you may want to know the overall set-up of the place. This resort is a standalone establishment in beautiful Vermont countryside not near any shopping or restaurants. It is a campus of several buildings spread around tidy well-kept grounds. The sports complex with a pool, a gym and occasional free yoga classes is in separate building a short walk or ride away from where you will stay. Many of the visitors are mature folks with time shares. So for better or worse, at night the resort is a quiet and peaceful place with next to no activity going on.

Here are the pros and cons as my family saw them during our very enjoyable 5-day foliage trip to Vermont earlier this month.
+++ Personnel was very friendly and responsive to our requests. It was a pleasure to deal with their front desk
+++ Splendid surroundings.
+++ We got a lot of space for the money. Short of renting a house, where can you imagine parents and grandfather enjoying an evening cup of tea, while the kids are asleep upstairs?
++ The pool was awesome. You could do laps there. And it's largely an underused amenity -- hardly anyone there in late afternoon. My 4-year old and I just loved it and went to the pool every day.
++ Excellent kitchen in the suite. All the utensils, pans and plates one needs to cook and consume a dinner.
+ Free wifi (maybe, because I am IHG member?)

Cons:
-- The restaurant seemed to be somewhat mismanaged undercutting the efforts of friendly waitstaff. The first time we ate dinner there, it was very slow. Also they switched to a limited menu, because they had run out of many items. The next evening they warned there would be more than one hour wait for food because one person was sick and we ate on our own back in the room.
- Because the property is a time share, they don't stop by to empty garbage cans and change towels unless you ask them too, in which case they do so quite promptly.

In retrospect, staying at Ascutney for a few days in October feels like a good vacation idea and I am glad that's what we did.

We went for Canadian Thanksgiving. We rented a two bedroom unit. It was fine but old. The kitchen appliances were new but the kitchen itself was sparse. No good knives so we bought a paring knife at the dollar store. I think they want people to use their restaurant. The bathrooms were basic and the tubs need replacing. Not dirty just chipped. It was nice to have a real fireplace but if they want you to use only duraflame they should sell them at the resort. We bought them at the hardware store in Windsor. We were on the lower level and the sound proofing is not good-could hear every footstep above. The resort has potential it just needs some work. The indoor pool and gym facilities were great.

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor.

We returned to the Ascutney Mountain Resort for a week in the fall and were delighted with the fall colors that surrounded the resort. We used the resort as a base for day trips to see the fall foliage in and around the east coast area. We had a 3 bedroom unit on the top floor that was spacious, clean, and comfortable. We loved the resort the first trip in 2011 and returned in October 2012. Even though it was a week bought through RCI we did not have any pressure to attend a vacation club presentation. The front desk staff were helpful and recommended restaurants and other attractions. We highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Higher floors in the main building have a great view of the small mountain and fountain behind the r...

We celebrated our 15th year anniversary with our two wonderful children. Although its in the middle of nowhere, we were surprise that our children 13 and almost 10 years old would want to come back here. They love the scenic spot over their bedroom, peace and quiet, the rooms are very spacious, very clean, almost everything that you need are here. Kitchen are fully equiped. Wifi is fast. Very cozy... Excellent. We will definitely see you again next year!
