Miserable from beginning to end. The disinterested hostess tried to give us the worst table on the deck even though there were plenty of open tables to be had. She was clearly too lazy to walk another 15 feet or simply did not care about our dining exprerience. To say that there was sticker shock when we opened the menu would be an understatement. I understand it's a tourist hot spot but no one likes getting gouged. $15 for fried calamari is incredulous. Sure, we could have got up and walked out but we figured at that price level the food must be outstanding. Additionally where else would we go. They are lucky enough to be the only restaurant on the lake.
We started with the $10 flat bread appetizer. 20 minutes after putting the order in we figured that they must be baking the bread from scratch. No such luck, we were served a soggy seven tiny pieces of thin bread with some mozzarella cheese, barbecue sauce, and a dot of tasteless pesto. The food runner, not our server, first offered our food to another table. We had to shout out "hey, over here". He didn't even give us side plates to not enjoy our lousy appetizer on. This is when we first thought we were in trouble.
Fast forward another 15 minutes and we had our second encounter with a different incompetent food runner. Again this guy tried to serve our entres to another table. Again I was shouting "those are ours". This may have been my biggest mistake. I should have let someone else take the two plates of over priced mediocrity they were slinging. We'd probably still be sitting there if my girlfirend didn't get up and walk accorss the deck to steal a ketchup bottle from the lucky table who were getting out of there.
My girlfriend's tuna burger $15 plus $2 for frozen bagged season fries looked ok. I had a bite and it was ok although someone in the kitchen was heavy handed with the pepper. That alone makes me question the quality of the fish. I had the steak and cheese sandwich $10 plus the standard $2 over charge for frozen fries. My sandwich was hands down the worst steak and cheese I've ever had. I would just leave it at that but since you've read this much I'll indulge you with just how terrible it was. This thing was 7 inches of pure misery. The "steak" was unseasoned and had a curious grey color and a rubbery texture. The onion was scarce to non existent, the peppers I was promised on the menu were absent, and I think they threw 3 slices of mushroom in there just for fun. This monstrosity was all topped with a neon orange Velveta style cheese substitute. I picked at it for a while because I was starving. I decided not to send it back because I didn't have another hour of my life to lose waiting for a sure to be poor replacement.
So here we are $40 later and just finishing one of the worst meals we've ever been served. I would suggest that everyone pass on The Lake House. If you want a good meal on the lake there is a good deli at the Citgo station at the corner of route 4 and route 30. Alternatively there is a McDonald's just down the street in Fair Haven. At least you know upfront when you walk into McDonald's that you will be eating food that came from the freezer.
The last point that I'll make is this. I know that The Lake House is a popular summer family place. I'm going to go out on a limb though and say that we were not the only guests to be annoyed at the staff's children running through the dining area with fishing rods and nets for the hour plus that we were there. All the while stopping to interrupt mommy, our server, to ask for her cell phone.
