“Max's Tavern is fantastic...!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

Not sure about the expensive set menu at the front (the price scared me off), but go round the back to the tavern and the food is top notch for more realistic prices...
Fresh ingredients, many grown on site, great cocktails and hearty meals... And the service was amazing - friendly and attentive.
The buttermilk onion rings and the raspberry rhubarb cocktail were my personal highlights, but book in advance as it can get quite busy.

“Prix fixe dinner rip off”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

A friend new to the area booked us in the dining room...big mistake. Should have read the fine print on the prices for the prix fixe dinner. The seafood curry was decent but the filet mignon was chewy and bit grisly when filet should be melt in your mouth tender. Our biggest shock was when we received our bill, the 3 course dinner was $65 per person. Had the meal been spectacular we would have happily gone off without a thought of the cost of the meal.
However we could only compare it to the wonderful prix fixe meals at Woodstock's Prince and the Pauper which is $48 per person.
We have eaten many times in the tavern where prices are reasonable and the food is great for Tavern fare but when you charge $65 per person for what is supposed to be fine dining, it should be exquisite.

“Don't miss the Tomato Soup”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

We ate at Max's Tavern because we had fond memories of the Tomato Soup. We wished the rest of the meal had been as good. Maybe it was what we chose but I didn't like the maple syrup salad dressing or the cheese the chef chose in the salad. My husband's burger was good, the fries excellent. The ingredients were obviously high quality but I felt that even our waitress wasn't all that interested in the whether we really enjoyed our meal. I think a bit of the luster is missing. Two couples near us raved about the duck and LOVED the food. We love the soup!!

“Still pretty dang good-”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

Hadn't dined here in awhile (since last summer) and we dined here twice this week. It's still really good, but some of the great entree's and appetizer's were not on the menu any longer. Bummer!! The menu was pretty boring, to be honest. There are usually such fantastic items to select from. Perhaps they are just waiting for fall to get in full swing before they change the menu. I sure hope so, as I'll be renting here for 7 weeks beginning Oct 1st. It was just a tad BORING these past two visits... but still really good! :)

“Two words- unforgettably AMAZING!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

Attended a wedding here and the venue and food was unforgettable. Nine course meal was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget. This chef is first class and at the top of his game. Staff was friendly, approachable, and professional. The gardens were breathtaking and the homegrown food that was incorporated into the meal was appreciated. Do yourself a favor and try this hidden gem out. I hope to get back one day.
