I got what I paid for: a small clean room with barely any amenities. I was very happy with my stay. This place is even better than does motels with numbers on their names. I would definitely never take my wife there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Of course if I wanted a better place, I would have paid more than $38 through PL.

Room smelled, mattress was like a stone slab, towels were rough as sand paper and next to freeway. Not a place I'd recommend staying to anyone except someone need a roof out of the rain.

I booked this hotel via Priceline.com for $33 plus $11 tax for a one-night stay. We were going to a concert in West Valley and wanted to spend the night there rather than have to drive home late at night. I usually have good results with Priceline, but I also usually use it to find 3- and 4-star hotels. However, the only hotels in the West Valley area are 2- and 2.5-star hotels. When I ended up with the Extended Stay America, I admit I was disappointed. Compared to the other 2-star hotels in the area (even on the same block), this hotel is inferior in features and, I would guess, comfort.

That said, since my husband and I were just looking for a place to crash after a late-night concert and I knew based on the hotel's Web site that this hotel is the most basic of all basic hotels, I wasn't actually disappointed by our stay. It was about what I expected, and it was okay. But would I stay again? Not if I could help it. There are better options out there for comfort, and it'd probably be worth paying full price for a better hotel instead of trying through Priceline to find the cheapest hotel deal like I did.

Here's what we liked: The location is good, close to the I-215 and within walking distance of the E-Center and numerous chain-style restaurants like Cracker Barrel, I-HOP, Chilis, etc. The room was clean. We used the fridge provided in the room (also provided, but which we didn't use: coffee-maker and coffee packets, toaster, microwave, stove top, some utensils and pans). Shower water was hot and plentiful.

What we didn't like: The hotel called our room a queen room, but the "queen" bed seemed small to me, more like a double. Snuggling closer to my husband was fine. What wasn't fine to me was that the bed only had two thin pillows, one per person. Being 8-months pregant, I tend to need a lot of pillow support when I sleep. I suppose I should have planned ahead and brought our own pillows, but I was surprised that the room didn't offer a spare pillow in the closet area like most hotels do. I did think ahead enough to bring our own shampoo and conditioner, since the hotel (as I suspected) doesn't provide any (just bar soap). The TV was smaller than in most hotels. The air conditioner was NOISY and woke us up during the night. Also, our "non-smoking" room, on the second floor, smelled like it may have once been a smoking room. However, the smell wasn't obnoxious enough that we noticed it all the time, mostly just when we first walked in the room.

The previous reviewer mentioned 2 great danes. Apparently, that tenant is still staying there because we met one of the great danes as we were checking out this morning. The girl behind the desk apparently asked the dogs' owner if one of the dogs could stay with her behind the desk today to keep her company while the owner went out. That dog was HUGE! The girl said off-handedly that she was worried he'd jump over the counter, he was so big. He seemed friendly enough, but still. The type of place that welcomes great danes to the front desk isn't my personal favorite place to stay.

Overall, for $44 we got what we expected. We got some sleep, but we won't be back.

Don't expect homeyness at the Homestead Studio Suites in West Valley, Utah. Situated in a tourist enclave at the edge of a neighborhood populated by check cashing businesses, Mexican fast food joints, and dumpy tire shops, this extended stay property will make you do just the opposite: leave as soon as you can. The general vicinity is thick with other hotels and chain restaurants like Chilis and Ruby Tuesday, but travel one block east of West and you are out of that zone.

Out of three floors, the top two are designated as smoking rooms, leaving those hapless health nuts who wish to stay in a non-smoking room relegated to the bottom floor. Beware: If you don't smoke, banish the thought that you might be able to endure the smoking rooms ... if they are the only units available. I checked one out before I checked in and almost passed out from nicotine poisoning. The smell has permeated everything, including the staircases leading up to the top two floors. All I can say it that there must be a lot of smokers in this town!

Getting a good night's sleep is possible at this urban homestead, as long as you have some good earplugs on hand and don't mind the thumping and clunking from above well into the wee hours of the morning. Pets are welcome here, too! During my stay, I saw numerous residents with canine companions, including two great danes (who were bigger than their owner).

That's all fine and dandy for pet lovers (who the heck travels with two Great Danes?), save the flea bites I was treated to on my first night's stay. Speaking of fleas, many of the residents here look like they have all seen better times and it makes you wonder how they can afford the nightly rate. Maybe my expectations are too high, but it appears that $55 to $75 per night is not enough to filter out the riff-raff.

In the afternoon and evening, it's not unusual to encounter some of the happy go lucky residents hanging out in front of the lobby, enjoying the view from one of the benches, downing a brew. Well, at least some people are having a fun stay.

The rooms are ok, but not too clean. Expect to see dirt running down the drain from the soles of your feet when you take a shower, since the carpets need a good shampooing. It appears that housekeeping just does the minimal to keep these rooms clean, expending the least amount of effort to do the job.

Should you stay at the Homestead Suited Hotel in West Valley, Utah? I would suggest not. Do yourself a favor and travel further out of this area to find better accommodations.
