The hotel rates went through the roof during Speed Week, but we were able to borrow a fifth wheel, so we dry-camped on the BLM land just a few miles before the salt flats. The other campers were very friendly and considerate We had a few crazies who lit off fireworks in the evening, which we quite enjoyed.
We drove out to the salt flats, but took bicycles as well. I highly recommend bikes to ride around on the salt and in the pits. Make sure you use PLENTY of sunscreen as well! Some folks took EZ Ups and just camped out during the day, but we enjoyed having the bikes and the trucks so we could ride or drive to the starting line to watch them push off, the one mile mark or three mile mark to watch them pass, or five miles to watch them pop the chutes. Also, we could sit in the cab and watch the cars go by (binoculars are a MUST), while listening to all the stats on an FM station wired just for the races.
We met so many nice people, and saw so many great cars - both race cars and just weird stuff used for noodling around on the salt. The only down side was the SCTA, which seems to have some weird sort of politics going on, and couldn't get their act together. They would pass a car through the tech inspection, then disqualify it on a technicality AFTER it had won. That was just weird. Otherwise, it was the trip of a lifetime, and I can't wait to go back next year!
