5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2010

We rented a 2 bedroom condo. Large kitchen area, dining, living, and our bedroom was large too.

Furniture and linen a bit kitschy, but some would say elegant.

The other bedroom was kinda small with a king bed, one table lamp only, large bathroom.

Our bathroom was small.

Not enough lights in both bedrooms.

2 balconies.

Nice appliances and dishes, square plates, but no serving dishes...we had to buy some that we left...

Pools/tubs are good.

Valet service for car and skis is very good. Staff friendly and quick to help.

Truly ski-in and out, but lift that serves the lodge closes at 2. Should close at least at 3.

Not easy skiing back home if you are a beginner. Slopes were empty. Great. No waiting in line!

No problem with the toiletries.

We'll be back!

As far as the actual accommodations go, Escala's were first rate. We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bath with a good sized kitchen and family area. Each room had a flat screen TV. The kitchen was very well appointed with high end appliances and all of the necessary cooking equipment. The master bath was HUGE with a separate tub and large shower. The master bedroom was also very large with a huge walk in closet and even a fireplace. The other bedroom was smaller but fine for our 2 sons. The pool and jacuzzi were large and nice -- I really can't say enough about the facility. The only areas where I would see room for improvement would be to add a restaurant or bar and to improve the ski-in situation. Ski-out was fine, but for a beginner plus to low intermediate skier, ski-in is "iffy." I did it one day and swore not to do it again. I heard other guests talking about this as well. So, we just valeted our skis as the ski valet right by the gondola. The only other thing I'd mention would be that the shuttles didn't seem to come by as frequent as we would have liked. So, we ended up walking a good bit. Nothing is too far, but at the end of the day when you're tired and have 2 children with you, the walk can seem further (plus a bit up hill on the return!). But, I'd go back in a heartbeat to Escala!

This exclusive condo resort offers the worst bedding possible. The one bedroom unit is so small only a queen bed can be used in the bedroom There is no room for a night stand on one side of the bed & if using a chair to improvise the closet door cannot be opened. The sleeper sofa is a joke. We finally pulled the bedding off of the mattress (coil springs protrude into your back) & slept on the floor for the duration of the stay. The lighting is not adequate the rooms feel dark & "cavelike". The bathroom is huge, some of that space should have been incorporated into the bedroom for adequate space. Bring your own amenities or a crescent wrench to open shampoo & conditioner. Kitchen is beautifully appointed, this resort does not have a restaurant but there are a few within a 5-10 minute brisk walk. Make reservations, all are extremely busy. Skiing at The Canyons is incredible, just stay at one of the other resorts at this beautiful destination.

we recently stayed here for 4nights with some friends for a final ski trip of the year. we got a really great package deal which included rooms and lift tickets along with some vouchers for food.
the hotel/condo is great all the furnishings used were good quality. the unit we stayed had a great kitchen with top of the line appliances. it was a 2bdrm end unit in the building closest to the pools. our master had two balconies one looking onto the pools and another balcony facing the back. the other bdrm had a balcony that was accesible from the back mountain. the rooms were very roomy with tv's in each room. the master had a fireplace and a great bathroom with large shower and soaking tub. only complaint about the master bath was there weren't any drawers to store our toiletries as the counter space was limited. also like someone else mentioned earlier the products escala provided are terrible. the shampoo and conditioner left a film all over my hair. not useable at all. definitely recommend bringing your own or going to the store once u get there. the complimentary shuttle takes you anywhere in the canyons resort or down to the grocery/liquor store. also to main street where there's a lot of nice shops and restaurants.
the spa and pool area for the escala are very nice. heated pool and 2 hot tubs one with a nice fire and waterfall feature.
the ski in/out was nice they also have a ski valet area on the second floor of the main building that we did not use as it was not very accessible if your not staying in the main building. there are 3 buildings in all and they are not linked together. building 1 and 2 are linked but only on the first floor. it was just easier to walk to the sunrise lift. having its own lift up to the mountain really helped us avoid the lines for the gondola over at the base area.
the canyons was never crowded when we were there. most of the times we had the runs to ourselves.
the main base area had some nice shops and restaurants. but there are no restaurants within the escala. overall the stay was great and the location was wonderful. i do have to mention the staff as mentioned before are all very young and seem a little inexperienced. for the quality and level escala is promoting itself as we found the service to be a little lacking. could just be its new and everyones learning. we will return for future trips.

Service was great, housekeeping was good. The front desk was nice enough to let us check in early on the first day since we arrived at 9:30am, so we even got an extra half day of skiing in! We tried to ask for late check out, but they said it was not possible because they had so many people checking in. That being said, the entire time we were there it felt like the hotel was not even close to full - we hardly saw anyone in the halls, not even at the ski valet in the morning (we left first thing every morning, the ski lift opens at 8:45 am). We used the hot tub every single day and we only had to share it once with other people.

The room was great - VERY nice, very new and spacious. The bedroom is a little tight but that was no trouble for us. The bathroom is the star, with 2 sinks, a big tub and big shower with excellent shower head and water pressure. But BEWARE of the toiletries (shampoo and conditioner) - they suck! They look really nice in the packaging but work really badly. I used everything I brought and was forced to use the hotel's on the last day. Definitely will bring big bottles of my own stuff next time. Otherwise, the room was excellent, the bed was comfortable although I wish ours had come with a king size instead of a queen. The TV is decent, but the speakers seemed to be blown out or something because it started doing the buzzing thing when it got too loud.

One bad thing that also happened to us - we were in a room on the lift side of the lodge, and we were also kept up late at night with the sound of snow cats outside our window (beeping and engines running). If you stay here, see if you can request the other side of the hotel). Otherwise, it was completely quiet the whole time and we never heard a peep out of our neighboring rooms.

Location and amenities
Escala is ski in/ski out, which is really great. However, like someone before said, it would be nice if the Sunrise lift opened earlier, considering the main lift from the hotel opens at the same time. The shuttle will take you anywhere you need to go, so there's really no need to rent a car. Grocery and liquor store are about 5 min away, and Main Street in Park City is only a 20 min ride (the shuttle makes stops at other lodges along the way so it takes a bit longer than a cab). It never took us long to call the shuttle, we never had to wait longer than 5-10 min. The shuttle to Main Street was very convenient, although it was tight at time with too many people (just on Fri and Sat nights tho).

Best & Least
Best - Ski in/ski out access
Least - noise from the snow groomers at 5 am

just leaving today, having stayed at escala for 5 days with wife and 3 children between 11-14. we are frequent travelers, but this is our first vacation to a ski resort. we rented a 2 bdrm unit. below are our pros and cons of the resort-
-new property, large living room, high end kitchen appliances.
-ski school was great and well staffed. the kids and adults were equally pleased. the staff at the school is well organized and very nice.
-lots of trails, no lift lines even at feb vacation week but be aware there are very few green trails.
-quick ride to the main drop off for the gondola, rentals etc
-very close to supermarkets and shopping, just 2 or so miles down the road. park city is also very close. terrific location.
our location faced the sunrise ski lift. this is very noisy at night because it is a staging area for the snow cats and ski mobiles which causes frequent beeping from midnite to 4-5 AM. we would strongly recommend giving up views and face the inside towards the pool.ear plugs are necessary because...
...we had to leave the windows open in the units because the room was so hot. we had the heat off the entire vacation and even with the windows open the 2 thermostats currently read 73 degrees and go as high as 75. i can't explain the heat source, the fireplaces when off are warm but i don't think it's just that.
-the sunrise lift does not open until 9 am which is too late to take if you want to ski out and make it to the ski school. it doesn't make sense why they don't start it at 830 which would be a true ski out experience. if you aren't going to the school this should not be a problem.
-bring a book light if you want to read in the bdrms, as they are very dark and poorly lit.
-the master bdrm is tiny, just enough room for the bed and bureau
-the pool is small, but you can ride down to the grand summit which has a large pool. there are two hot tuns though which are very nice.
-the shuttle service is very hard to predict. half the time we had a ride in less than 5 minutes, the other times it was 20-25 minutes. it was not consistent even at certain times of the day. it made it hard to know how far in advance to get ready.
-check in time is 5 pm, based upon our experience wouldn't expect anything earlier during the busy season. i think the problem is they have far too little staff cleaning the rooms, which are large and take quite a bit of time to clean.

we would give this resort a slightly positive recommendation. on the one hand feel very privileged to have an opportunity to stay somewhere this nice. the overall space is good and a good value compared to equal space at the grand summit. the noise and heat in the rooms made it uncomfortable.
i think the biggest issue for the canyons to resolve is staffing levels and professional supervision. there are so many instructors on the mountain. at times it seems like their yellow jackets were more prevalent than visitors. but staffing at the resorts was too light. the other issue was the staff is so young. they are very nice and willling to please, but are not capable of handling problems or following through on what they promise.

all of this said, the skiing was great and that is what probably counts the most. i hope this helps.
