“Absolutely wonderful!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Montage Deer Valley between Nov. 19-23, 2011. From the moment we arrived the staff was first class. Absolutely everyone on their staff was tremendously helpful and very quick to assist us in whatever we needed. They also had great suggestions for activites in and around the hotel. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and so is the location. We had a "Peak King" room which had two balconies that provided an unbelievable mountain view. The room was extremely comfortable and quite large with heated floors in the bathroom. We were there the week before Thanksgiving, so we got a pretty good rate.

Overall, we were looking for a scenic, romantic, and pleasurable winter vacation in the mountains. I can honestly say that it couldn't have been any better and I would definitely come back.

Some of the highlights of our time at the Montage Deer Valley: 1) Very helpful staff, 2) Beautiful location, 3) Daly's Pub (they have bowling, pool, darts, and shuffleboard) and Apex Restaurant, 4) Snowshoeing and Tubing (both complimentary), 5) Outdoor hot tubs (really neat when it snows), 6) Indoor pool and hot tub (incredible view of the mountains from the hot tub), 7) Complimentary S'mores, 8) Excellent fitness center, 9) Outdoor fire pits are really nice when it's cold out, 10) Free shuttle to and from Park City.

- Greg M., Mississippi

Room Tip: Not sure about any of the others, but the Peak King room offers a wonderful view of the mountains. J...

My wife and visited for 24 November thru 1- Dec 2011 to celebrate our anniversary. From the moment of our arrival to the very end of our stay we experienced the absolute best customer service, friendly staff, excellent facilities, and amazing beautiful mascot dogs. Gibby at the Concierge desk was helpful, thoughtful and incredibly involved in making sure that we had the best vacation possible. Even the valets made a point of knowing our names, and being extra helpful.
I found the facilities extremely beautiful, well appointed and accessible (I am a wheel chair user). Highly recommend staying here if you are in the Park City Area.

Room Tip: Excellent views of the Valley on the North side and great views of the mountain on the other. If you...

We stayed at this resort over the holiday and found the service to be the worst of any luxury resort we've ever been too. Housekeeping took forever and when they did arrive they were painfully slow. Even in the restaurant we were instructed to sit at one fo the table in the bar and then watched time after time as servers walked past us with out taking our order. We were only one of two tables in the bar at that time. When we asked the hotel to help us make a reservation at a restaurant in town and the concierge never got back to us. When we inquired later as to the reservation we were told the concierge had gone home for the day and left a note. (?) But no follow through. NO call to us. It was very frustrating. Especially at the high holiday rate we were paying. IT is a fabulous property however they really need to work harder on their service in every department.

Room Tip: If you have kids and it's snowing, it's ideal to stay on the ground floor room that opens to...

I stayed at the Montage Resort Park City last August 2011. I must say that this property has the best customer service of any hotel I have ever stayed in. Ever!! Fabulous front desk help that escorted us to our room. Fabulous room service staff. Fabulously clean and comfortable room. Fantastic food in the hotel. We had a little issue with some hornet flying around our patio and the building engineer came immediately and took care of the situation and like everyone else at the hotel he asked "Is there anything else I can do for you? We want your stay to be enjoyable.." The wake-call operator even asked the same question...The bath robes and slippers were the most comfortable and luxurious I have ever used. This place is totally FAB..

Room Tip: We enjoyed the front side of the hotel with the view of the valley from our first floor patio.

This was our second stay at the Montage, the first being just after it opened, and again for a week over Xmas 2011. We always stay 5 or 6 star, and we are seasoned travelers. There were 2 things in our experience that weren't good. Xmas day we suited up for the slopes and the Montage lost my boots - they found them after the lifts had closed. We couldn't ski - Xmas day. To rectify the situation they credited our ski hire (skis & poles) for the week, and lift passes for Xmas day hence recovered the situation somewhat. At check out there were charges of $14/$21 at every breakfast sitting. Breakfast was included however 'Lattes' weren't. We can hardly stomach American coffee at best, but to only find out about the $7 Lattes at check out.... I was embarrassed for them. The charge for the lift passes on Xmas day still appeared on our bill at check out, and it took a long time to sort out. To pitch this hotel as high end then pinch dimes thereafter... doesn't sit well with me. We loved the spa, the staff were very friendly. The position of the hotel is outstanding.

The Montage has service nailed! We love to travel and have stayed at many top resorts (Four Seasons Maui, Ritz Bachelor Gulch, Ritz Grand Cayman, Ritz St. Thomas, St. Regis Kauai, Reef Atlantis, etc., etc.). So, the best part about the Montage is they really take customer service and making you happy to a new extreme. We went at a peak holiday time (Dec 26 to Jan 2), and they still delivered despite the high occupancy. Kudos to the staff! The ski valets are awesome ... literally putting your ski boots on and off for you. So, the good/great about the Montage = SERVICE. Also, there is no fee to use the spa and fitness area. This is a nice plus, and they even have family hours so everyone can enjoy the excellent spa facilities.

The bad was we paid SUCH a premium for this stay ... so our expectations were super high. For 1700+ per night, our King suite was acceptable ... but no in-room coffee maker, there is a fee for in-room wi-fi (which they happily refunded, but why have to ask?), and our suite had a very limited view. They tried to help us overlook these things with "complementary" gifts/amenities such as cookies, candies and other treat baskets - as well as dinner and bowling our first evening. So, they went above and beyond our expectations ... but I could never quite get over the gap between what we paid here and what we have gotten at other top resorts for much less cost (much larger suites, amazing views). And, we booked via whatahotel dot com so got a room upgrade ... yet still not much of a view as a result. We did get the breakfast for 2 benefit which was a nice perk (buffet = $29 per person).

Now for the ugly. And I really feel for them on this one. Whomever did the interior design really did them a dis-service. A beautiful natural stone (as opposed to a smart water-proof porcelain look alike) was chosen for the shower walls throughout -- it was in both our in-suite bathrooms as well as the spa showers. AND, they chose a natural stone with no water-repelling coating. Soooo ... although the resort is only a year old ... the shower walls were covered with dots of black/blue mold! Eeeeewwww. I tried so hard to believe it was part of the stone design, but I could not stop looking at it when showering! I feel so bad for them. They are going to have to power wash professionally more often or have a coating applied or completely re-do these at some point! I am afraid to see what it will be like in another year's time. Having recently re-done bathrooms in our home, we were carefully advised on what do choose and what not to choose to avoid this issue. It is hard to believe this choice was made inside of a top hotel. Expensive mistake -- I hope the people responsible for choosing and approving the stone selection have been held accountable. It's kinda embarrassing to mention it, but even more embarrassing for the hotel and brand to have their guests see this. Sorry I had to say it, but I have never seen anything like this before.

So, we must end on a high note ... they deserve it and earned it. I do recommend you stay here, at least once. The location is very good and the staff is superb. Due to the extremely high cost, I will have to consider other options next time we are in Deer Valley ... but will keep them on the consideration list. Last year we had a suite with full kitchen, pool table and hot tub at Sky Lodge for a fraction of the cost. We can have two equally good trips for the price of one Montage trip at nearly any other top resort at any ski destination. The previous year we were at the ski-in/ski-out Sundial in Whistler also for a fraction of the cost - with the extra benefit of being surrounded by fine dining in the village. Of course these last two hotels I mentioned are boutiques, not mega-resorts, so you get fewer on-site amenities.

Bottom line: if your wallet can easily handle it, you will not be disappointed at the Montage. They not only aim to please, but know how to please.

Room Tip: Book via whatahoteldotcom for a one category upgrade and other perks.

This was our first stay at Montage. When staying in Deer Valley, we usually stay at Stein Eriksen Lodge. We decided to try someplace new, and booked a room over a the New Year's Long weekend of 2011.

At $1400+/night, the service and rooms need to be spectacular. The room was lovely and first rate, but the service was problematic. On our first afternoon, it took two phone calls and 1.5 hours to get ice. After the first night, I had to call to get our room serviced by late afternoon, and after the cleaning staff left they had not emptied the trash, straightened the desktops, emptied the trash, wiped down bathroom countertops or fixtures, nor replaced used glasses. The bed was nicely made and the tip was gone, so it's clear someone showed up.

The overall feeling is that the staff was undertrained and uninterested, and the hotel is significantly understaffed. Perhaps it was because of the holiday and hotel was extra crowded, but it was difficult to find staff to help with anything.

Overall the staff seemed reasonably competent but not well trained and not service oriented. They answered questions but didn't do anything extra, and gave no impression that they were anxious to make our stay wonderful. Even the concierge seemed distracted while helping for dinner reservations on NY Eve, and when my guest arrived, she was told by the valet that she could probably carry her suitcase by herself, since she only had one. It's true that she could, and in fact preferred to do so, but we had a hard time imagining such a conversation happening down the hill at Stein Eriksen Lodge.

The 6th floor lounge is luxurious and comfortable. The sushi bar was nice, the barkeeps were pleasant, and overall that was the best part of the hotel.

One of the least pleasant things about the stay was that there were so many children. I am not used to seeing many children at luxury hotels, but this hotel caters to families with young children, and on our visit there were many pre-teen children staying at the hotel. The staff made no attempt to keep young children from running and playing in the common areas. Granted, it would have been better for the parents to keep this from happening, but absent that, it would have been nice to have been able to enjoy a drink at the bar without children running and playing nearby.

This is a beautiful hotel, but until it is properly staffed and the staff is properly trained, it will not be worth the expense.
