“Great place for ski vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

Just got back from a week at the Sundial lodge at the Canyons. The hotel itself is in excellent shape and the room, actually a two bedroom condo, was clean and had everything one would need from a full kitchen to gas fireplace to comfortable beds. The staff was also very helpful when things where needed. Don't forget to ask for a robe for the cold walk to the hot tub. The hotel is in a great location and is very close to ski rentals, lift tickets ski school and the gondola to get up the mountain. As for the skiing, the snow sucked this year. Worst snowfall in Utah in 20 years but they did open 40 trails, out of over 160 which was ok. We had to drive to Alta to get some better snow. But you cant help mother nature. I would return to be able to get the rest of the mountain skied and would stay at Sundial as a great convenient place to stay.

Room Tip: Top floor facing the village so you can see all the action from your balcony.

We stayed at the Sundial Lodge at the Canyons over Christmas week with family. It was my best ski experience in a long list of of locales in Quebec (e.g. Mont Ste Anne), British Columbia (Whistler), Vermont (many), New Hampshire, California, Colorado. My enthusiasm is based on five key factors that made the experience joyful and the stress level low: 1. Sundial Lodge at the Canyons has EASY ACCESS. A flight to Salt Lake City was followed by a 35 minutes drive on safe, level, major divided highways. I have too many memories of driving 10-25 miles along treacherous, narrow, hilly, slippery 2 lane roads to get to ski mountains/resorts. 2. The location of Sundial Lodge within the Canyons is but a few feet from ski rentals, lift tickets and two major lifts up the myriad Canyons' trails. 3. The Canyons is a magnificant series of mountains/trails that challenge any level of skier. Green, blue or black, the trails that were open during Christmas week were beautifully groomed and maintained, well marked, and extensively signed to provide up-to-date information for skiers on conditions, This is western skiing at its finest - wide slopes or narrow glades, easy runs or jaw-dropping, double diamond inclines or bowls. 4. Sundial sits in the midst of a self-contained village that offers a range of restaurants, from rustic to luxurious, from family-oriented to sophisticated. One evening we ate at the Waldorf-Astora restaurant at the base of the mountain. A gondola ride took us down and a free shuttle service returned us to the Lodge. The high quality restaurant features delicious beignettes for dessert that are sinful to eat and sinful to miss. 5. The service at Sundial Lodge and from staff at the Canyons is superb, attentive and highly trained. Within our party were two boys that relished one trail with built-in jumps, trails around tress, the heated chair lift . They had easy-on-easy-off experiences on all lifts. Among the other positives: this Christmas week was one of the poorest in recent years for natural snow cover, yet the slopes that were open were well groomed, the scenary was exquisite, and the trails enough to satisfy. If all the slopes had been open, it would have taken more than a week to fully experience the vast expanse of trails. I did not feel deprived by this late start of Utah snow. The Sundial Lodge has an outdoor pool and hot tub, well-appointed and comfortable rental condos, with high quality bedding and kitchen facilities. The Lodge and the Canyons offer small and large touches that warm childrens' hearts, e,g. late afternoon cookies, sleigh rides, and others. if you are renting equipment, rent very early or late in the day. I started the rental process at 9 am and waited in line in excess of 40 minutes. Buy a full day pass and hit the hills early, because of you wait until the afternoon, the conditions begin to deteriorate. Also drink copious amouints of water for when it is dry, it is very, very dry. For those accustomed to East coast skiing - solid green ice, rocks or bare patches, shiver-skiing at 15o F to -20oF below zero, treacherous drives on narrow access roads, hiking with skis and boots for hundreds of feet to get to a lift- the Canyons and Sundial Lodge offers great skiing with minimal hardship.

I stayed here because I was attending a conference for work. The resort is beautiful, the staff was very friendly and helpful and there was plenty to do. I was in a studio room and the bed was very comfortable. The room was incredibly spacious, with a full kitchen, fireplace, jetted tub & a balcony. It was quiet & cozy and I slept like a baby!

I stayed at The Sundial for a conference in late October 2011 (before ski season). I was there for four nights, and would have liked to have stayed longer.

The room itself was spacious, with a kitchen area that would have allowed me to prepare a full meal had I wanted. I had to be careful of the toaster setting, though, as I ended up charring a slice of bread and setting off the smoke detector one morning (this at a medium setting). The full-sized bed was comfortable, with very soft pillows - I slept very soundly. The bathroom was clean, and the water pressure in the shower as strong as I needed. The water did get hot, but I found letting the water run for a few minutes was necessary. I'm a taller guy (6'2"), and found the shower height adequate.

My room was on the second floor, so I had the option of walking out onto the ground level with a patio. This door was the thing I was most nervous about, as it took me a day to figure out how to lock it (after talking with the staff, I was told that it was a french lock - so turning the handle up activates the deadbolt, turning it down retracts it).

The complex as a whole was big, and still under construction - but I was able to get from this building across to the main building without difficulty for the daily conference events.

The grounds around the hotel were amazing, and I can imagine (although I've never been skiing) that it would be a great place to stay during the winter. As it was, I was able to hike up the mountain above the complex and enjoy some great views, and the drive in to historic Park City took only a few minutes. The location was a great mix between proximity to towns and cities and being "away from it all."

In all, I would recommend this location. If you have a conference at The Canyons, the Sundial is a great lower-cost alternative to staying in the Grand Summit. If you are looking for skiing, I could imagine this would be a good place to stay. It wasn't perfect, but nothing ever is - I would stay here again.

Walk out the door to hike, bike or ski the Canyons. Great location and nice accommodations. We were there in the summer and it was so nice to be able to wake up and hike right away. There was live music in the courtyard right below our room. The only drawback was that there are very few options for food/coffee/drinks within walking distance. It was tough to find breakfast without having to drive.

"My son and I stayed at the Sundial Lodge last winter (March 2011). It was terrific. The skiing at Canyons was first class, especially with the new lifts to ease you over to the Dream Peak side and the Cloud 9 restauraunt. The hotel is extremely conveniently located just a few steps from the gondola. The staff was very helpful and cooperative. The manager, Mary Sorensen, was extremely gracious in every way, especially in selecting a room for us. Our room had a kitchen, a lovely balcony, was well appointed and had all the amenities we needed. We enjoyed apres ski in the jacuzzis. The free wifi was also a great convenience. Good restaurants within walking distance. In short, a great place. We look forward to returning."

At base, surrounded by restaurants and services. I did not choose the place so was happily surprised by the in-room washer and dryer, fireplace and fully stocked kitchen. Furniture was up to date, bed extremely comfortableThe rooftop hot tub with a view was always on point. The front desk, ski porterage, and valet staff were uniformly extremely polite, friendly and helpful, and never flagged despite the all-too-common entitled jerk behavior of many guests.
