“Nice hotel in historic building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2010

This is a very nice hotel. The suite I had in the main corner of the building was immense and spacious. The renovation has provided a nice space for the hotel, and it has everything you would expect from a Hampton Inn. My only complaint, which there is no resolution for: parking is a bit of a walk away from the hotel, on the other side of the block. There is dedicated parking in a parking garage, or limited free nighttime parking on the surrounding streets. Nothing really convenient however.

Ogdenhotel, General Manager at Hampton Inn & Suites Ogden, responded to this review, June 8, 2010
We would like to thank you for your kind and positive review of our Hampton Inn & Suites. As you know, our corner executive suites offer stunning views of two mountain ranges. We are proud of the unique qualities our Hampton offers.
To address your comments about our parking, we do have some secured, covered parking. We are also working with Ogden City to find a more viable solution to our current parking. Because of the historic configuration of downtown Ogden we are somewhat challenged. However knowing this we are proactive in providing the best parking possible.

My staff and I look forward to your return. We love having you here
Sincerely, Debbie Merritt, General Manager

I stay in Hampton Inns frequently and must say that this is one of the more unique properties in the chain. As you'll read in other reviews, this is a historic building with high ceilings, columns, etc. My guestroom was an enormous room on the eighth floor. Looking at the fire escape map on the back of the hotel door, it looked like I had one of the larger rooms. It almost seemed like there was more space than they knew what to do with. The bathroom had vast open and unused spaces. The bed was comfy and the desk/chair were efficient.

My view was of downtown Ogden ... a Wells Fargo bank, the Solomon Center (presumably a sports/entertainment complex), and because this is Utah ... a Mormon temple. Actually, I was a bit put off by the presence of advertising literature in the lobby for Mormon temple tours, etc. It was a bit too "in your face" for my tastes, especially at a Hampton Inn.

There was an issue on check-in with billing and whether my room was prepaid or not. The front desk clerk who helped me on check in was nice enough, but seemed in a bit of a stooper and out of her league running the front desk. The issue was resolved the next morning by a more professional person running the desk.

Breakfast was so-so ... but free (as is the case at Hampton Inns) and with sufficient variety.

Downtown Ogden, though, is a bit odd. We asked for recommendations for where to dine and were directed to an "entertainment corridor" that runs down a street and terminates at Union Station. We tried that and in walking there saw lots of empty buildings, street youth, and a bunch of businesses locked up tighter than a drum. Restaurants that were open either were greasy spoon joints or completely empty. After a couple times down the block we did find a brew pub that had very eclectic food (pizza, steaks, Thai, you name it ... just odd) and had a decent meal.

Overall, this Hampton property is just fine.

Very comfortable, thoroughly modern hotel in a historic downtown building, preserving a few original architectural details. The parking garage around the corner worked fine for us. The complementary breakfast was only mediocre.

Downtown Ogden has wide streets and sidewalks, and looks spic and span. But there are many vacant buildings, and it was almost deserted on Sunday evening. We did manage to find a couple of restaurants open.

Very good hotel in an otherwise deadbeat town. We came here for a skiing weekend and scored a extraordinarily well-priced ski-and-stay package deal. Room was huge, quiet, and comfortable. Staff was friendly and really came through as promised when they ran out of skiing lift tickets one morning, then called the mountain and made sure tickets were waiting for us when we arrived slopeside.

Breakfast was pretty standard with cereals, fruit and yogurt, some random hot items (eggs, sausages). Spa in the basement was windowless but still fabulous after a long day of skiing. Some people have complained about the parking, but it's not bad if you're reasonably able-bodied. Besides, you can load and unload the car right out front before parking. With proximity to the restaurants on 25th Street, we'll stay here again when we come back for a skiing weekend.

We only stopped here to spend the night en route from Cody, Wyoming to Kanab, Utah. The room was great: very clean, spacious, and comfortable. The breakfast next morning was excellent. The gentlemen at the desk was very helpful to us in explaining how the parking system worked. It does take some time to unload and then drive around the block to the parking garage, park, and go back to the hotel. Minor inconvenience, but annoying late at night when you're really tired.

The bad news is: Don't expect to find a meal in Ogden, Utah after 10:00 p.m. We settled for Burger King (UGH!)

I booked this hotel a month ahead of time, so as a Hilton Honors member, was very disappointed in this room. The view was of a narrow opening facing an ugly brick wall and steel support beams. At first, the room seemed cute and chic--right up to the moment my husband and I realized we couldn't get out of each other's way because it was so small. The one upholstered chair in the room had no arms, and faced the bed rather than the TV. The worst part, though, was that there were no mirrors in the bedroom, which made the morning routine difficult. AND--the full length mirror was located in the bathroom--directly across from the toilet.

Desk clerks seemed to know nothing about their city. I needed a watch battery, and no one could tell me where to find a jeweler. Imagine our surprise the next morning, to discover a jeweler right across the street.

Parking was a bit of a pain, especially when returning to the hotel late in the evening, which meant having to go into the lobby to get a special permit, then finding a spot in a different garage in the same block.

Positives: the room was clean, and the lobby and breakfast area were lovely. Breakfast offerings were just fine.

I'll be back at the Marriott next time I'm in Ogden.

Poorly remodeled historical building. No weekend maintenance staff. Hot breakfast means one hot item. Loud A/C unit.
