“Pleasant stay close to Bryce and Zion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2011

Nice hotel/motel. Big, clean rooms, comfy beds and free WIFI.
Decor a little outdated, but we were not looking for trendy. Coffee maker and fridge in room, plus convenience store at the adjacent gas station meant that breakfast at the Thunderbird restaurant was not necessary. We did eat there the evening we arrived ( not much else in the vicinity), and the food was OK. The staff were friendly, but my husband's steak was overcooked. We didn't have room for their famous ho-made pies: the unnecessarily huge portions in the US seemed to rule out desserts for us Europeans in many places.
There is a 9-hole golf course which our room looked onto at the back and a lovely swimming pool + jacuzzi which we could easily see from our private ground-floor balcony, and used a couple of times.
The hotel also has a kitschy gift shop and a coin-operated guest laundry, very handy for travellers on the road for some time.
All in all, a clean, comfortable, homey and affordable place to stay if you want to see Bryce and/or Zion. I'm so glad we didn't stay in Page, which looked like a real non-place with hugely over-inflated prices.

I am so glad you noticed how big and clean our rooms are! We strive to make the beds comfy too with fluffy soft mattress covers and quality mattresses. Yes, some of our decor is outdated in our units closest to US-89, but those are soon to be the newest with the newest furniture. Oh! We certainly do not want to be trendy. We want to fit into the Utah National Park atmosphere, sort of blend in the with scenery rather than stick out like a sore thumb. There are other dinner options - including one of the best places to eat in the Southwest - The Buffalo Bistro in Glendale. Again they are not fancy, but Ron the owner does all his own cooking and offers SW unique food like buffalo rattlesnake and has an open bar in his establishment. As you stated: Homey and Comfortable! That is what we strive for!

Thank you for your stay and for you comment

We stayed one night after spending the day at Zion and before heading to Bryce the next day. Nice place with a lot of character. We ate in the hotel restaurant (Thunderbird) since there really isn't anything else close by and it was pretty good. Definitely more of a motel than a hotel - it is an older facility, but was clean and comfortable. Would have been nice to have breakfast included in the room rate.

Character! I love that word. That is what we are shooting for. Character and Southwestern Charm that blend in with the nearby parks including as you mention Zion and Bryce. As I mentioned in the review above, visitors will be thrilled to check out Ron Terry's Buffalo Bistro in Glendale - His motto is "Its Terrible, but they Keep Coming Back!" Talk about a charming place! Yes, we are older, in fact my Grandparents homesteaded this land in 1930 and built there before the tunnel was ever completed in Zion and before SR-9 was built. US-89 was just a dirt road. My Grandma built a lean-to baked pies for the construction workers. This is how we began. We like the motel atmosphere and feel that Southwestern Utah and the area we are in away from the cities is NO place for a hotel! - Which is why you do not see any out here! Although we have always adjusted our room rates so to reflect that breakfast is not included, we do plan to offer breakfast in the price in the very near future.

Thank You for your stay and your comment!

After reading many reviews regarding this hotel, some recommending and a couple not quite so, we decided this would be the place we would stay on our roadtrip to Western Legends Days at Kanab, Utah. This was a last minute decision, so our choices were limited. We are very happy that our choice led us to Thunderbird Lodge. The staff was warm, welcoming and efficient. The large room was spotlessly clean. There was a giant soaking tub with a rain shower head (which I love). We ate in Kanab before we took the beautiful 15 mile drive to the hotel, so we did not do dinner at the attached restaurant but we did have breakfast there...which I will discuss in a bit.

As I mentioned earlier the king bed room was plenty large. I think it may have been redecorated in the not too distant past, because it had a newer western style decor - very attractive. This is not a luxury hotel, but we were not expecting it to be. We found it to be very pleasant and quite comfortable. For advise: Our room was downstairs on the busy corner, probably the one room that would have a bit more noise than the ones farther to the back of the building.

We really enjoyed having breakfast at the restaurant. It is bright and cheerful (like the staff). The food was tasty and acceptably priced. We actually came back for their advertised home made pie - delicious!!! before heading off across magnificent Zion National Park to home in Nevada. We plan on returning.

MAGICAL! This is exactly how I feel about our location as well! I understand that many like to stay in the cities but for me this area, surrounded by gorgeous mountain and in a place with only two homes is ideal! Why not got for rustic when visiting the National Parks? To me a hotel atmosphere just does not fit my idea of a vacation to the parks and monuments.

Our housekeepers take great pride in keeping your rooms clean and I will pass this comment on to them. Most of our rooms have been newly remolded, taking out everything including the walls when we do this! We do however still have a few rooms we are working on and once we are done with those rooms, that whole unit will then have new furniture.

Home of the Ho-made Pies! I am so glad to hear you enjoyed the restaurant! My brother has put a lot of work into it the last few years and will smile at your comment. My Grandpa Jack put that on the sign back in the early days of the business because the whole word Home Made Pies did not fit. That was back in the says when Ho just meant a Hoe you plow the ground with.

"We plan on returning."

This is the best compliment we could receive!

Tip for your next stay: The rooms with the big handmade log furniture and vaulted ceilings are in the units closest to SR-9. My favorite room is the one farthest from the restaurant, upstairs, overlooking the golf course.

This hotel is very clean. The rooms are well-maintained and the beds are very comfortable and clean. The food at the restaurant was very good and the waitress that served us could not be any nicer. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Thank you so much for a 5 Star Review! That makes me so happy! We strive to make all our guests have that same smile on their face that you just put on mine.

Cleanliness is very important to us and our housekeepers take great pride in their work.

I will pass on your Restaurant compliment to my brother who manages the Restaurant. My own daughter works there and she says "this is not work - it's fun." I think when its fun for people to work somewhere then they pass that on to the guests.

Thank you again for your wonderful review.

Our family stayed here for one night as we were on our way to Bryce Canyon. This hotel is a perfect place to rest after spending a long day at Zion Park. The room we had (2 queens) was spacious. Although the room was clean we did find the hotel a little dated as well as the pool needed some updating. However we really enjoyed their restaurant. Their is a small 9 hole golf course that was priced very reasonable if you have any energy left after touring the parks. It also should be noted that the town is extremely small and your dining options are very limited.

You must have stayed in one of the few rooms we have left to remodel. I am so sorry about that. We would love to have them all done, but we do what we can as quickly as we are able. We are hoping to get those done this winter as our business slows down. As you noticed, Mt. Carmel Jct. is not really a town since there are only 2 homes in the whole place. The golf course and hotel make up the majority of the land. The Virgin River also flows across the street behind the RV Park.

The golf course has great rates of only $6 for 9 holes. I am glad you noticed, and I hope you were one of the ones with enough energy to play a round or two.

So many do not know about the Buffalo Bistro in Glendale. Ron Terry, the owner can certainly throw together a unique meal. When staying check out his rattlesnake, buffalo and other Southwestern dishes. Other than that, there are 2 restaurants in Mt. Carmel Jct. and a Subway.

Thank You for your review!

Yes, this is the ideal place to stay if you are visiting both Zion and Bryce Canyon.

I will take a look at that pool and give it some attention where needed.

Thank you for your Review!

Having spent the day at Zion National Park, this was a great stop-over on our way to Bryce. Clean and neat, nice restaurant with good food, very reasonably priced, we would certainly stay here again.

That you so much for your review and noticing our "reasonable price"! I love to hear that guests will again stay with us. We strive to make our hotel a wonderful place to visit and yes, we are perfectly located between Zion and Bryce, also Cedar Breaks, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Cedar Breaks. It's a paradise of outdoor activities. We actually like to be basic and blend in with the Southwest Park atmosphere instead of trying to look like a fancy NY hotel in the center of the very unpopulated area on the east side of Zion National Park. I will pass on your comment about the restaurant to my brother who run that.

Main plus is the strategic location between zion park and bryce canyon. Nice clean rooms behind a gas station. It has also a pool and a golf course (not 18 holes though i believe). Friendly service. Perfect for a stopover or a few nights to visit the parks.

Our location is indeed ideal for those who want to visit Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks as well as Cedar Breaks, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. We might be far from cities, but we are truly in the heart of paradise!

The golf course is small, being way back in the 1960's but its lush, green and has some fantastic holes. The best part is that green fees are only $6 for each 9 holes you play! That is hard to beat!

Thank you so much for you comment!
