Hi Trippers,
We should have skipped Monument Valley.
We had 3 kids (7,9,17) and THANK GOODNESS we camped at Gouldings (basically "across the street" because the rock climbing there was gorgeous and we took beautiful family pictures). We thought that we'd get to explore Monument Valley, too. (our own fault for making the assumption without research)-
There is NO CLIMBING, NO EXPLORING, NO LEAVING THE DRIVING TRAIL in Monument Valley. Our mouths were literally hanging open when we read the signs because we had come so far. So it was a total bust for the kids.
Signs are posted EVERYWHERE telling you that you're trespassing if you explore. Long bumpy road with nothing to do but look at big rocks. Yes, you can get out of your car (to look at the rocks 20 ft closer).
And, to be honest, there are prettier rocks and scenery along the long long highway to get in and out of there. If you have seen a postcard, then you've seen Monument Valley.
Another FYI.....the restaurant is marketed as staffed with all native americans............yes, it is. But they just happen to all be native americans there on the resort. There is no interaction or learning involved at the restaurnat; they are just regular waiters and waitresses. Our 7 yr old asked us "what does native mean?" --- so I asked the waiter "...What is a respectful way for us to answer that question?" ----------- she looked at me like why are you bothering me with that? She didn't even answer.
THAT hurt; since we spent almost $300 to support the MV experience; gas there, snacks, camping, souviniers, food, restaurant, entrance fee, gas out of there.
And the restaurant "frybread" is not the frybread (cornmeal based) that you remember from childhood pow-wows (I am 42 yrs old) ----- it's just fried bread.
Overall, as I mentioned, we should have skipped MV.
We went to Carlsbad, then MV, then Alburquerque, then Grand Canyon (north rim), the Las vegas, then Lake Las Vegas (Loews Resort), then back through Alburquerque. An amazing vacation.
