“5 miles from actual Monument Valley”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This place is good and has a lot of character. It has good views too but it is about 5 miles from the actual monument valley. The view hotel is the one inside the park.

They have a restaurant on site which we liked for dinner with only a few veggie options. The breakfast was a little less than okay. Not sure why can't you get the basics egg/pancakes right.

They also have a gift shop with competitive prices.

About the room - the bathrooms were on the much smaller side. This may be expected considering the age of the hotel. The rooms were good but we felt the queen bed to be smaller.

Room Tip: Pick the View hotel if you would like to capture sunset/sunrise and if the prices are not too high...

travelled up from Vegas for a couple of days. long drive but the views made up for it.We stayed in apartment 107 looking out over monument valley. the room was warm and cosy even though it was about 4deg. outside in the evening. The food in the onsite restaurant was good but the 'Frybread' takes a bit of getting used too! The visitors centre and entry to the valley its self is approx 4 miles down the road. Just make sure the suspension on your car is up to some rough travel !

We stayed 2 nights in apartment 334 at Goulding's and it was very disappointing.
The room was extremely warm when we arrived and the heat was almost impossible to turn down - which made it very uncomfortable, even though it was cold outside.
The kitchen tap had a very, very bad water hammer which rattled the apartment whenever it was turned on and the bathroom door did not lock or close properly.
Overall, the property was run down, with black stains on the bathroom floor and poor cutlery etc in the kitchen. Our entry key cards failed on the second day and was an effort for the staff to deliver replacements - and they blamed us ! There was also something flapping in the wind - very noisily - directly outside the bedroom window , which affected our sleep.
We ate at the on site restaurant and it was the worst service we've had so far in 5 weeks of travel in the USA (see my review)
I wouldn't choose to stay here again and would consider the other local options first.

Room Tip: Don't accept apartment 334 !

Goulding's Lodge management and staff wants to apology to this guest for their less than satisfactory stay at one of Goulding's suite units. So sorry that this unit did not meet up with your expectations. Your honest comments about your lodging accommodation and the Goulding's restaurant will help Goulding's staff to better serve future Monument Valley guests. Thank you for your honest comments.

Campground was a good place to overnight with RV. Affordable for family, clean, very few people about during Thanksgiving week so got a great spot looking out toward valley. Check was easy and the people working there were helpful (we arrived a day earlier than planned). lit a fire at end of day and had smores with kids as the sun went down.

We had a room on the ground floor looking onto Monument Valley. The room, bathroom and amenities were fine, clean and functional. It was the view from the patio which clinched the visit We ate in the restaurant and were served by friendly staff. The food was good, well cooked and plentiful. If you want to know more about the history of the place and its fame as a film set there is a small theatre showing John Wayne movies made in Monument Valley. There is a well stocked "Trading Post" where there are many articles for sale relating to the history of the Tribal People. There is also hand crafted pottery, produced by a local Tribal Artist/Potter.

Room Tip: Check that your room gives you unrestricted viewing of Monument Valley.

We arrived and were greeted by helpful staff at check-in. We had a pull through RV site which reasonably level and we had a full hookup. There were plenty of showers, they were free, and they were open from early in the morning until late at night. We only stayed one night, but if you want to see Monument Valley (which we did through the Gouldings Deluxe tour) its very convenient.

This was our 3rd or 4th trip to Goulding's and this time we chose one of the houses because we wanted our party of 4 to be better able to visit in the evenings. Sorry but I don't recall the house name (it probably had one). The house was far from luxurious, but was clean, well furnished and met our needs. Full kitchen, 4 bedrooms, two baths and a living room - with a good view of the monuments out the front window. If you have several couples, or a family, you might consider one of the several houses they offer. They are probably cheaper (or about the same) as a couple rooms in the motel, but offer a lot more room and "social" opportunity. Plus the kitchen, to include a coffee maker, gives you the option to cook, snack, etc with stuff you can buy at the store just down the street. If nothing else, you can keep your beer cold in the fridge. But remember - bring it with you, because you won't be able to buy any withing 40 miles.

Room Tip: You have to call and ask about the houses as they are not advertised on the website.

Goulding's Lodge management and staff is so pleased to hear that this guest enjoyed their Monument Valley visit. The house units are nice for a larger family or group of friends. And yes, Goulding's Lodge is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, so the sale of liquor is prohibited. Please remember to BYOB when coming to this part of the world. Thank you for your nice comments regarding your stay with us at historic Goulding's Lodge.
