“Aweful Smell!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2007

My husband was suprising me by booking our stay here for our anniversary. It is a beautiful place but when we found our way (the hostess did not walk us to our room) to the top floor we were met with an awful smell. My husband is an electrician and works in attics and recognized the smell as bat gwano. The A/C wasn't on, so the smell was probably worse than usual. We opened windows and turned on the A/C hoping that it would help. I went to the front desk to complain and the hostess gave me a bottle of Fabreez and some votive candles. We left for a little while and drove around hoping that the smell would go away, but when we returned we could still smell it. They did refund our money and gave us a list of other B&Bs nearby and we stayed at another one that was excellent! It is a shame that the beauty of this B&B was ruined by the awful odor! We couldn't smell the odor on the other floors--just the top floor.

We stayed two days and nights. We're satisfied with the room despite uncomfortable chairs, but the grounds and general upkeep were very disappointing. Dusty road to the place, dry lawns and flower beds, unmowed grass, bird droppings in gazebos and decks, fences and gazebos in need of paint. For the price we had second thoughts about staying. We were actually "on the bubble" about returning another time, but were hassled by whom I assume to be the owner on checkout about gift certificates we got after the original booking. We left convinced we wouldn't want to come back.

The Johnson Mill had many attractive elements that could have been the basis of a wonderful B&B. It has a beautiful mill wheel set next to a pond, great views of the mountains and a lovely original building. They offered fresh cookies every day and their breakfasts were original, if a bit heavy. The rooms lack attention to detail, however. In the family suite, the bathrooms are dark (with dark painted ceiliings), the lamps have dim, colored bulbs, the light fixtures don't work as you'd expect, furniture was missing and the general decor is of poor quality and in bad taste. The location, the pond (with canoe) and the cookies almost makes up for the lack of attention to detail. Ultimately, it's a shame that while this place could be really wonderful, it is not.

We stayed at Johnson Mill last Year in May and found it to be the most disappointing B&B we had stayed at during our 1 month trip around Utah. Our room was Millpond and whilst spacious it lacked attention to detail and cleanliness. The silk curtains were rotten with great tears down them. Under the bed was covered in dust and 3 of the bed struts were broken and lying on the floor. There were cobwebs above the wardrobe and one of the door runners was faulty and came off its track. The door handle out to the balcony was broken whilst the balcony railings were peeling paint. In the bathroom the shower door was not working properly. We were so upset by the room which looked superb on their website!! that we asked to check out immediately we had found somewhere else to stay. We were told by "the Manager" that the owner did not live there or nearby and was not well and did not have much to do with the B&B. We did receive a full refund and I informed the manager that I would be e-mailing the owner once we returned home. Despite 2 e-mails I heard nothing either from the hotel or the owner. Consequently I contacted the magazines who had recommended Johnson Mill and informed them of our experience.

We stayed at the Johnson Mill B & B a couple of years ago, and had a better experience then. Since that time, things seem to have gone slightly down hill.

It was our anniversary, so we stayed in the Honeymoon Suite. It looked awesome online, but was a little worn down in person. Light bulbs were burned out, the jets on the jacuzzi tub didn't work, and our toilet was broken. We asked to have someone come fix it, and they did-- with a PAPER CLIP! So of course it broke the next time we tried to flush.

We told the girl at the front desk of our problems, and she was indifferant at best, and said she'd let her manager know and we might receive some kind of a credit (we received nothing).

On the plus side, the grounds are beautiful and the breakfast was delicious. Maybe we just chose the wrong room? But you would think the honeymoon suite (one of the most expensive rooms) would be updated and kept in good condition, so I don't know about the others. Based on this experience, we will spend our money elsewhere next time we want to stay somewhere special (hopefully with a flushing toilet).

  • Liked — The grounds and the breakfast.
  • Disliked — Run down, lots of broken things (toilet, jacuzzi jets, etc.)
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't stay in the honeymoon suite.

My fiancé and I stayed at this B&B for the week between Christmas and New Year's in 2004. We had an excellent stay. Our room was the Mill Pond room. Incredible view and great snowy landscape. Not to mention, a fire in fireplace with the delightful sound of the water wheel at night while the windows were open to a light frosty breeze.. It was also great to sit in the Jacuzzi tub after a day of tubing or snowmobiling (we have never skied and we didn't have the guts try this time).

Breakfast was excellent and Bob and his wife were always accommodating and were willing to provide for anything you asked.

What to do in the winter, if you don't want to hit the slopes or deal with the crowds in Park City:

Go tubing at Soldier's Field in Midway.
Take a drive from Midway to Provo, the scenery is phenomenal! Stop in at Sundance for a walk around and if it's not too crowded, grab some lunch.
Go snowmobiling at Daniel Summit and don't forget to get a massage after, it is really fab!

You have to eat the Snake Creek Grill at least once or twice. Their food and service is incredible.

My husband and I just returned from a weekend at the Johnson Mill Inn. This is a great alternative to staying in pricey Park City (which is only 20 minutes away.) We stayed in the Courtyard room which is much larger than the photo on their website suggests. It is also the least expensive room! It has a gas fireplace & a big bathroom which looked fairly new. While not the nicest Inn we've stayed at, it was very comfortable & convenient. Each morning we enjoyed a great breakfast & mugs of hot coffee. (German pancakes one day - quiche the next.) We skiied at Sundance (only about 20 miles away)...also went cross country skiing & tubing at Soldier Hollow (only 10 minutes away.) We had good meals at The Main Street Cafe & the Snake Creek Grill (delicious...make reservations!) The final day we spent walking around Park City...fun, but we were glad we had stayed in Midway at the Johnson Mill Inn!
