Sometimes I wonder why I am always writing five-star reviews of B and Bs. Then I realize it's not because I'm easy to please. In fact, my husband and I are very particular. The fact is, we make our choices largely based on TripAdvisor recommendations. Once again, on our trip to Kanab, Utah, we were guided correctly.
The totally renovated Purple Sage Inn is not only a five-star B and B; it is perhaps the most beautifully furnished we've seen--a model of Victoriana at its best. Hosts Kathy and Tory, as everyone has said, are delightful. Kathy put up with my having to change or cancel our reservations more than once, and she was very gracious about this.
Breakfasts were replete with fresh fruit from local sources and eggs cooked in delightful ways, some with a southwestern touch. In the large living room and in the kitchen there were always goodies around to tempt us, everything from peanuts to chocolate to a large variety of teas.
We stayed in the largest room, on the first floor, which has a bathroom 12' x 12' with two sinks. The huge bed (we dubbed it "emperor" size) was unusually comfortable, and at night peace and quiet reigned.
A great advantage to B and Bs is the chance to sit at breakfast with other guests and meet up with them later, either in the living room or garden. Sometimes the guests have like interests, sometimes not. At the Purple Sage Inn, we met wonderful people, including a gifted gentleman who played classical guitar out in the garden while we sipped wine, and a couple from Singapore and England whose interest in history appealed greatly to my historian husband.
The town of Kanab is nothing to rave about. It has one really good restaurant (Rocking V) and lots of motels, most of them dreary-looking. But the town is ideally located because of its proximity to such natural wonders as Zion and Bryce national parks and the Grand Canyon. For us, though the main draw is Best Friends Animal Society, surely a heaven on earth for animals that have been abandoned or abused. You can volunteer there if you are animal lovers, as we are.
