“Hold on for the ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

The road takes you to many of the must-see locales in Grand Staircase Escalante. The condition varies from smooth rock to teeth rattling washboard sand. That being said, there were few potholes and it was generally in very good condition. Take it easy around the curves and hills, as the washboarding can cause a loss of traction.

“Great access to many great places”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

There are many many many great locations along this road. While I think it should not be paved, it gets so much traffic that it should be graded more often. It has lots of washboard sections, actually most of the road.

“Endless Exploration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

Well, if you have a sturdy vehicle with good suspension and moderately high clearance, then you could spend days if not weeks exploring the Escalante Canyons. With the limited knowledge on the GSENM that I have, I believe this is one of the best dirt access roads for the Monument. Halfway down HITR road, you pass into Glen Canyon Rec area. Any kind of info on hiking and exploring can be found by visiting the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center at the west side of town.

“Call it the flat tire Road”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

If you want to come to all the Slot Canyons and Arches in this area you must travel this dirt road. We had a flat tire after 10 Miles in 2010 and this year after 8 miles. They grade it after rain washes and then there are a lot of iron parts that you cant see in the sand. When we drove back to Escalante to the Garage, we have seen 2 others cars with flat tires !
