We really were looking forward to staying at Esc. Outfitters. When calling/emailing about the reservation, the people were lovely and the pictures made it look like it would be a lively place to stay. But it turned out to be the most uncomfortable place we stayed.
We were to stay here 3 nights in April, but arrived after a long drive to find they had messed up our reservation. There were 5 of us and we had booked two cabins, but only one had been entered. We also also been told they would put a cot in one of the cabins for the kids, which wasn't done. Luckily they could get us in two cabins for two nights, but were totally booked the third, so we were out of luck that night. As it was late, we decided to stay that night. THe next day, they offered to book us a room at the Prospector next door for the third night and comp us the cabin that we could get, but as we didn't want to split us from our small kids, we all just moved to the Prospector the third night. (As it was cheaper than two cabins at Esc. and had heat and bathrooms, for a family, it was the better deal.)
Next when checking into the kids cabin, the door was jammed (it took the front desk guy pushing very hard to open it) and the kids could'nt open it on their own, which worried me about them being trapped inside. So my husband and I had to split up between the two cabins for safety the first night. After we went and complained (I was wrong in thinking that they would do something about it, knowing it was an issue when we checked in) and they fixed it the next day.
The second night got down to 22 degrees. We had the heaters cranked as far as they could go, but you could still see your breath in our cabins. We all kept getting up and adding clothes during the night, but still there was very little sleeping at all. This made us all pretty exhausted for the next couple days until we caught back up on our sleep. I talked to the people in the next cabin about the cold and they said "We were toasty, we brought our big down comforters from home!" What? How were we supposed to know to do that....not that it was an option on the plane!
The cabins themselves were fine. They are small as everyone is saying, but they are fine and comfy. The bathroom was warm and cozy and clean....I admit to considering bunking down there that cold night, after going to the bathroom and realizing it was way warmer than our cabin!
As noted in my other review, the restaurant is really great and the people there are great, but I would not recommend staying at the cabins in the cold, or if you have a family. As the heat is limited and the cost of two cabins is more than a nice, heated, motel room with a bath.
