“Comfortable, lovely lodge.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

We booked the two-bedroom suite with a shared bathroom and a sink in each room. This suited us as we had a traveling companion with us. Our second-floor room was large with a doorway to the balcony and a view of the lake. The king sized bed was very comfortable. The second bedroom faced toward the front of the lodge. Most of the birds had migrated already so we didn't get to bird watch. There is a gas fireplace in the commons area downstairs and another reading area upstairs. We had an evening meal at the Devil's Backbone Kitchen which is right next to the lodge. The restaurant has a warm, cozy ambience and it was decorated with lots of pumpkins for the fall season. While most of our expensive dinner was very good, the trout was dry and chewy. They use local produce in their dishes so our meals were limited to mostly fall veggies. I would probably try one of the other restaurants on another visit.

Room Tip: Ask for the main dining room rather than the porch area.

What an amazing treat to pull into this place after a couple of nights of camping! The rooms were immaculate, and the super-soft terry robes were a nice touch. The pool was beautiful and included pool towels and outdoor showers. We pulled right out of the hotel on our road bikes to ride the Burr Trail, and the location was perfect. If you are willing to spend some time on dirt roads, the slot canyons about an hour away from the hotel are absolutely otherworldly and worth every minute you spend getting there. We had a couple of meals at the Hell's Backbone Grill, and the food and service were impeccable..... and, expensive. We heard rumors of previous guests encountering some not-so-friendly front office staff at this hotel, but we experienced nothing like that. Everyone was pleasant and helpful, and even allowed us to shower after we had checked out so we could be clean for our ride back to New Mexico. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

We stayed in room 22 which is funny because I don't know if they actually have 22 rooms. Anyway, it was like a 1 bedroom duplex that had just been finished. High ceilings, big and comfy king bed, a huge two person jacuzzi bathtub, a full kitchen and lots of towels (I LOVE that!). The only issue is that the room was recently done/redone and the place smelled of paint which I got used to quicker than I thought I would. We ate at the restaurant Hell's Backbone Kitchen 3 times (YUM!) and enjoyed our stay (we left bedroom window cracked due to the paint fumes and listened to cows mooing into the night -- which I actually liked!).

The only thing I didn't like was the evening Ask a Naturalist program. My bf and I visited the naturalist before dinner and the guy corrected us 3 times on stuff that turned out to be true: I asked about Ancient Puebloan ruins, the naturalist told me there were not ruins because the buildings in the area had been graneries, not homes. Huh? So there were ruins of graneries, right? Then the naturalist told us about a large rock formation and I said, "like a hoodoo?" and he corrected me telling me there were no hoodoos in the area, which is not true since we saw hoodoos at a nearby hike called Devil's Garden. My bf asked for a speedy, quick hike to do in addition to Peek-a-boo and Spooky and we got a lecture on how we couldn't drive fast on the dirt road. Duh! We're from Colorado, we were asking for a short, speedy hike, not the autobahn! Truly, not a helpful naturalist, not a people person. :-(

The restaurant Hell's Backbone was very good, we ate there 3 times and our fabulous waitress gave us GREAT hiking tips which was apparently beyond the skill of the naturalist. Tip, ask the waitress for info and you'll get helpful tips from a local's POV with a smile!

Room Tip: Room #22 was big, spacious, like a roomy 1 bedroom apartment with a huge jacuzzi tub!

If you are staying in the Boulder, Utah, area then look no further for a place to stay. The lodge is well located to serve as a base of operations for exploring Burr Trail, Hell's Backbone, Calf Creek Falls and more.

Meals are available at the Hell's Backbone Grill that serves excellent food but be sure and make reservations for dinner well in advance. This is a restaurant of some renown and you WILL need to reserve your spot for dinner well in advance. Breakfast is just walk-in so no problem there.

The Pros
+ green gardens let you feel like in a park
+ staff is charming
+ the room offered a lot of comfort and a nice terrace to sit outside

Really nothing to complain. Just be aware, that this standard has it's price. If you look what you get, this hotel is well positioned.

Boulder is very centrally located for doing the Burr Trail, the north-east section of Grand Staircase Escalante NM and also the pretty drive over Boulder Mountain. And this lodge has a lovely view of the duck pond, especially if you get a room with a balcony.

The lodge website includes a link to Earth Tours, an operation run by Keith Watts, which we would highly recommend and we have done a separate review.

We had an upstairs 2 bedroom suite that has one bathroom. It was quite comfortable, including a fridge and good bathroom amenities, plus a very nice balcony. However, space and ventilation were limited.

Internet was excellent. And staff were a pleasure to deal with. We experienced no problems with the cleanliness of the rooms. The hot-tub is a nice spot, but I could not use it because the water was way too hot for health and comfort.

We enjoyed the on-site Hell's Backbone Grill, but then we found that the Burr Trail Grill next door was even better. The Trading Post cafe, which is one door further on, was also a nice spot for coffee and cakes.

Overall, a recommended place to stay, but next time I would be more selective about our room choice.

This warm, laid-back lodge was a treat during a loop of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Utah's stunning parks. Very comfortable room (our overlooked the pond where we could watch bats flitting around at dusk), but the star attraction is Hell's Backbone Grill. Excellent farm-to-table cuisine that they've been doing long before it became trendy. The chef-owner's warm greeting and chat made our meal and stay memorable.
