I’ve stayed here 5 or 6 times. I used to have a friend in Vega and I’d stay here when I visited her. That’s how I first learned of the place. More recently, I usually stay here on road trips between Texas and Colorado.
I noticed a few years ago that the place changed hands, and I do think it’s gone downhill somewhat since then, however it suits my needs. This is a modest establishment, a simple one-story motel, but the rooms are clean and it’s loaded with amenities such as a refrigerator, microwave oven, iron and ironing board, coffee pot, hairdryer, an assortment of various-sized pillows and, of course, cable TV. Both the bedroom and bathroom have windows so you can get a good cross-breeze. It’s a good place to stay if you are traveling with a dog because there is a large grassy area in front.
I take offense at the reviewer who complains that there is “no 1st floor,” that the room doors open onto the parking lot. Yes, this is a motel, not a hotel. In motels, yes, you park right in front of your door. Personally, I prefer it that way so I only have to carry my bags a few steps. I also take offense at the reviewer who complains that there are no good restaurants in Vega. The modest Hickory Cafe has wonderful home-cooking. The local cowboys eat there (because the food is so good). This last trip, the Hickory was closed so I ate at the fancier Boot Hill Saloon and had the best hamburger I’ve ever eaten. Both are on Vega Boulevard (old Route 66), on the same road and just a couple of blocks from the motel. However, I was dismayed to read the review by cincygraffiti who says his/her room was burglarized. Because the Best Western Country Inn is in such a quiet small town, far from the big city, I’ve always felt safe there. So that review is worrisome.
The only caution I would give is to point out that this is cattle country. If the wind is blowing your way, you may notice the occasional smell of cows. More bothersome is on this last visit I didn’t think my bed was very comfortable, something I never noticed before on previous visits.
